Vinyl Storage

Hi

Bought a 2m by 5m Bessel Vinyl and have a few questions:

What is the best way to store it when not in use (will be in the tube it came in), upright or flat?

Do I open it all before putting it on the background stand or put it on and then open it?

Thank you

Because of their bulk and weight and because I may not have a
helping hand, I figured out some ways to cope with BG over the
years that apply to paper, vinyl and even some textile BGs.

Most of the hard to handle rolls are set to an alu tube that will
used on the Autopole system. I open it only once in position and
roll it back before removing and storing

All the rolls may be stored vertically or flat.

Hi Kev - if it's the same as my 2x5m grey vinyl from Bessel, it'll be on an aluminium tube so it won't deform if you store it upright. Mine's in the store cupboard upright in a corner. I've had it for 5 years or so.

You can do either tbh - if you have the space it's easier to roll it out on the floor, and then lift it up, especially if you're on your own, however if you don't have the space (ie to roll the whole 5m, or as much as you're going to use for both flat and vertical parts) put the crossbar in the tube (you'll need to remove one of the little bolts that holds the bar to the stand for it to fit down the tube - put it back when it emerges from the other end), and then put that on the stands. Raise them up to waist height (if you're on your own, do each side a bit at a time). Have an A clamp handy. Let it out until it touches the floor, and pull it out across the floor, whilst keeping your other hand on the roll. Once it's heading out across the floor, you can just feed it out from the roll without pulling it. Then put the A clamp on the end of the roll so it can't unroll anymore. Raise the stands up the rest of the way. Roll out some more if you need it and clamp it again, but don't unroll it all the way - leave a few inches wrapped around the tube. Add another clamp to the other end if you have one. Make a nice radius from the floor part to the background part, or more of a definite bend if you need to have a "wall" and a "floor" as opposed to a seamless background. Then tape the corners down with some gaff. It's tempting to just raise it up to full height straight away and pull it down, but the unsupported length is then much greater, and the weight just causes it to keep on unrolling - gathering speed, until it hits the end and rips off the tube..... Note the vinyl has two sides and you need the textured, matt side facing the camera. If it gets creased, use a hairdryer on max heat on it and the creases will fall out. You can also sweep and mop it like a regular floor. I don't recommend using a vacc on it though.

Rolling it up is much easier - just remove the clamps and wind it up by hand. Make sure the roll is level when you do this though or it will roll up towards the lower end. Tape the edge to the roll with some gaffer tape.
