Me and the missus are off to Crete on 8th June for 10 days, we have decided to hire a car from the airport this time and return it to the airport.
prices look pretty good with Hertz and Europcar from £186 for the 9 days hire for a small car.

Anyone any experience, quite happy with driving in Greece been and done that a few times, easy and steady seems to be the way.

I once heard you can take out a separate insurance policy in the UK which covers a years car hire so you have loads of excess cover etc.
Does anyone have any recommendations.

moneymaxim.co.uk is the place for you.

They will also quote for car hire .... probably cheaper!

I have used them for the last 2 years .... but never had a claim yet, so can't vouch for that side of it! :D

I've also used MoneyMaxim a few times for this type of cover. Much cheaper than the hire company's cover.

One thing to take into account is the hire company often want a big deposit on your card if you don't take their cover.

MoneySavingExpert.com has a good informative section about car hire and extra cover.

happy with the cost to be fair, went around a few price comparisom and all the same money.

it is the 3rd party policy I am after and I remember someone mentioning a specific one a while ago.

I have done this a few times using doyouspain I think.

The one thing I would advise you do if you go this route is to make a big fuss about inspecting the car on pickup, take photo's/video and pester the staff for any little scratch or chip on the windscreen that isn't shown on the paperwork.
And also mention the fact you photo/video'd the car loudly when in the queue to return it to anyone and everyone, makes for a smoother transaction.

I have seen quite a few people having their deposit kept by the rental company who seem to take the view that as you have your own insurance you can claim on that when back home and they just make an extra 1k euros on the rental for free. After all, they know you have a plane to catch so can't stay to argue too long.

Thanks on the MoneyMaxim heads up.

£35 for a year policy looks like just the ticket.
I would of course photo the crap out of the car on collection that's easy

Check out the BBC Holliday show this morning.

Great Avatar!

We hired a car in Kefalonia last year and we took out insurance at home - when we picked up the car I had to leave a credit card deposit of about £800 ! This was never taken off my card but when I got home I found that amount was taken out of my spending limit
It was floating for about a month then disappeared, bit worrying but was all ok in the end
Some hire company's in Greece advertise "no excess"
