I know it's been done to death, but I have to ask. What is the real world difference in grey and uk spec? I've been gifted a chance to buy a new body and lens and I'm torn between the 5d3 or 4 plus Sigma 35 ART. Looking on the Panamoz site a new 5d4 is £2,070 and Jesspos (for instance) is £3,229

Now, am I missing something blatantly obvious here? 3 year warranty from Panamoz, and an extra £199 from Jessops? Is it the resale value that puts people off? or the possibility of warranty problems? It just seems to me that a saving of over £1,000 is not to be sneezed at!

Any input would be welcome.

Thanks,
Nick

It's cheaper because you aren't paying any import duty. You also don't get any manufacturer's warranty the warranty is with Panamoz who are pretty good to be fair but as with any small business they could easily go belly up over night leaving you with no warranty.

As another option if you are worried about the warranty try HDEW Cameras they use a third party company for warranty so if they go under you will still be looked after. The equipment will still be a grey import but they ship from the U.K and are much easier to get in touch with by phone etc. although will likely be slightly more expensive.

I`d say, go for it, I have bought grey from Panamoz and love the price difference and warranty.
I know others wont agree but imo its my choice.

Unless you want to shift it quickly or want to use MPB it won't make any difference to the resale value. Vis a vis what you paid for it as a grey.

It will, I wouldn't even look at buying a s/h item that was bought grey, especially a body and if I did I wouldn't pay anywhere near the price I would for a UK bought item.

It’s cheaper because the panamoz price excludes VAT and any import duty (none on camera bodies though I don’t think). As an importer, you’re responsible for declaring and paying those yourself.

I don't use panamoz but the ones I have had in the past are cheaper than them but carry only 1 year warranty, usually have the wrong box, no manual or one they printed themselves, the camera is in different language and has to be changed into English.
No UK plug sometimes and strap may be generic Nikon / Canon strap instead of one with model number on it.
Some may spot a seller who sells grey stuff without declaring it as gray and never deal with you etc. So better to be honest when selling it on later

So you can be liable for import duties at point of entry into the UK?

You are liable.

Either customs will intercept the package and charge you direct plus an admin fee, or they will not, in which case you should fill in the appropriate paperwork and make the payment yourself.

Ok, I understand. So it's a calculated risk. But I assume the import duties are still cheaper than sourcing direct from the UK

A friend just got a 5D4 from Panamoz which was held up at customs, they sent out a replacement and asked him to send the one held up back to them wHen it turned up- very few places would do that. In the end they managed to get it intercepted and returned to them straight from customs.

It’s not really a risk though. You are obliged to pay the VAT, so it’s down to the cost / warranty differences.

The mind boggles!

You might not but others will. I didn't say to try and pass it off as a UK item, many people are happy to by a grey import second hand. Which won't see you losing much money on what you paid for it. I'd expect to see significantly more depreciation on a full priced UK model, just look at the peanuts MPB offer.

I did think that as I sold sold them a lot of gear in December and they didn’t ask where it came from, only if I was legally allowed to sell it

The stuff I have bought from HDEW and Panamoz were exactly the same as a UK model except with bodies the plug is a 2 pin one and they've provided a UK adapter with it.

I recently enquired about a 1dx at a very well known used camera site as to whether the ca,era was UK or Grey. They said they don’t ask about point of original purchase so couldn’t comment.

So i guess it’s not always possible to know whether you’re buying grey or uk when buying used.

?My EM5MK2 from HDEW was £230 less than UK, and I got a UK plug.

I wouldn't care if the body was grey or not. It's out of the same factory after all. And once it's out of warranty there's no risk whatsoever.

Why would you insist on paying less for the same equipment @magicaxeman ?

Because it cost significantly less on the first place! So as grey imports cost the buyer 20% + less than uk retail prices I would expect to pay at least 20% below current uk s/h value for a s/h grey item, you can't have your cake and eat it! you pay less, we pay less s/h.
Also some companies won't touch a grey item for out of warranty paid repairs so bodies in particular can be affected long after the warranty has expired.

Also for greys recalls etc don't apply, if its not a UK item it has to go back to its country of origin, so I bet theres a few grey A9 owners cursing right now!!

I've never hidden my feelings on tax dodging companies/individuals undercutting and putting UK retailers out of business, it should be stopped by law now, close the loop holes and lets have a level playing field.

I bought a Nikon D500 from Panamoz and was very happy with the price and speed of delivery. The only difference in the camera was that it only had English and Japanese language options. They included a UK plug for the charger.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again if the saving was significant.

With a proper manual, software CD`s and strap that says the model number and not just Nikon etc ? Impressive

I have made my views on Panamoz before and would not hesitate to buy from them again.

Further more their advert states that the price of an item includes "Taxes and Duties".

Same here, way better customer service than I’ve ever had from a UK-based company. Made a warranty claim and had the funds via PayPal within 30 minutes of emailing them the quote.

Import and custom duties - not taxes ;)

This coming from someone who slated me about grey imports and reported my thread to the mods.

I quote

"Grey ones are undesirable in the used market, people don't want grey ones. They are dodgy in general and quoting their prices is dishonest in my opinion and I reported it"

What a hypocrite

I have reported you many, many times.

You lurk in the Nikon sales threads asking an awkward question or asking for pictures but never buy a single thing.

You have no intention of buying it, you are a total creep mate
