Evening All

Got a cheeky day off on Friday so planning on driving down to Lakes, always fancied getting a few shots of Skiddaw from Derwent water and hopefully some reflections of it on the water (hoping it’s got snow on top! Never been to this area so looking at setting up around Borrowdale, is this the best location for shots and parking? Planning on staying down for most of the day so is there any other location I should be going?

Scott

Are you sure you mean Derwent and not Bassenthwaite?

Evening @ChrisH
I'm around. Could be free on Friday.
Don't know about snow. It had been clearing. Can check various Web cams tomorrow.
An itinerary? Could work one out tomorrow morning. Possibilities are limitless. Weather is supposed to be OK on Friday. You coming.

How's Concorde coming along?

Any tips Mikeldore? Would Derwent water be the best option for getting Skiddaw in shot?

I might be wrong but I believe you get the best reflections on Derwent, I’m hoping I’m right [emoji23]
I don't recall what it's like from Derwent but you are a lot closer on the A66 side of Bassenthwaite

Skiddaw reflections can be got from either Bassenthwaite or Derwentwater.
You can get side on views from a number of parking spots alongside the A66 by the side of Bass Lake. You can get good shots from the lake (Derwentwater) in the park near the Theatre on the road to the boat jetties.
You can go down to Lodore ( Parking is a challenge) and take the footpath through the fields to Manesty. Good reflections of Skiddaw all the way across.
Take the path up the hill (Cat Bells) from Manesty. Sorry @ChrisH - too steep for you. Half way up there's a big platform which is superb for panos from Bass Lake all round to Lodore.
On the western shore of Derwentwater there are a number of boat landing stages which are useful spots.
If you don't have local knowledge you need map reading skills.

What else do you need to know?

@mickledore

I'm still waiting to hear off my mate as per our conversation. I might be out of action for a week, I had a bad fall on Monday and I'm pretty duffed up at the moment but plans are afoot for our next visit :D

One good spot is to go part way up the path to Latrigg. Takes about half an hour up Spooney Green Lane. You get a superb view of the lake looking all the way down Borrowdale to the big mountains of Scafell Pike etc. Skiddaw is behind you but there's more to see than one mountain.

Bummer. Hope you are OK. Was thinking of going out Friday. Weather looks good but Saturday looks carp - again!!!

Thanks buddy that’s some great knowledge!! I’m def going to go to Derwent water to try for some shots, will check out the web cams tomorrow and hope for some snow!! Coming from Glasgow so not too far, would you suggest sunrise or sunset?? Or is the light decent enough all day?

Scott

would you suggest sunrise or sunset??
My own preference for sunrise up there would be Tewet Tarn. Looking back over the water - it may be a sheet of ice - towards Blencathra and Lonscale Fell in the early morning light. Only a short detour, assuming you come off M6 at J40.
Skiddaw always seems best in evening light when the big western flank can go all purple. Quite often there is a little cap of cloud hanging around the summit.
Or is the light decent enough all day?
You are in January in the big fells which can have a micro climate of their own. Clouds can form and diperse at will. The light will be soft all day, jusy pray that you get plenty of it!

Thanks for the info!! The thought of the drive down is putting me off but I’ve not been out in ages so I need to get out! Thinking of heading down for lunchtime and spending a few hours around Derwent water, hopefully it’s quiet [emoji106]

My plan is to park in the great wood car park and walk over to the little outcrop of land at Barrow Bay, that should hopefully get some decent reflections from that point

Not sure if you'll get Skiddaw from there but you should get Cat Bells on the far side of the lake.
Weather is reckoned to be fine till lunch then possibly/probably rain in the afternoon.

Might head to the Theatre then and walk down a bit! Absolutely gutted the snow has gone [emoji85]

Big car park by the Theatre.

Reasonable cafe in there too.
Good shots into the lake with fences as leading lines.

Cracking drive down this morning, light is a bit harsh but will try and get something decent! Little bit of snow on Skiddaw although I think in this sun it will be gone soon

Thats a good idea and you could easily call at Castlerigg Stone Circle en-route to Derwent

Derwent also has Ashness Bridge and Landing plus Surprise View all within minutes of it

Got maybe one or two decent shots, the sun was just too harsh and that coupled with not really knowing the area made for a frustrating day, the road between Keswick and Borrowdale was also closed so ended up taking a huge detour that cost me about 40mins!! Back home and it’s fajitas for dinner so not all bad [emoji23]

@mikeldore - Thanks for all your tips buddy, I really appreciated that, top bloke[emoji106]

Glad you had a good day. Yes, the light can be too harsh at times.

Do you know why the road was closed? You should have used the detour to your advantage - but that's hard if you don't know the area.

I you fancy a meet round there sometime just holler.

Not sure but it looked like there was some serious construction going on, there was quite a few vans parked up in a purpose made car park so I would imagine it’s closed for a while!

I stopped at Buttermere and couldn’t believe the reflections, took a shot that I imagine is a very popular one then hopped in the car home! Will def be back down that way so will let you know and we can meet up [emoji106]

Maybe something to do with the Lodore Falls Hotel, they have some major building work going on.

I've checked Cumbria County Council and they make no mention of any problems.

Work at Lodore is mainly to the rear of the hotel so that's unlikely to be affecting anything.

Wonder what is happening?

Could have been just short term road closure, moving a crane or something, sounds like my sort of luck that:)

It was closed at the entrance next to Keswick and also next to Lodore Hotel so looks like a good stretch of road closed! Had a look through my shots, this is all I've really got, I know its probably done to death but for a 5 hour round journey its the only thing I have to show for it

Nice shot, good you got something, and it's all character building:)

I was up Castlehead I Friday morning and they were putting a new footpath in, just along from the roundabout at Keswick. It seemed like the road was open earlier before they started working.

Was closed Friday evening too. No indication of how far along.

Just found out that the road is closed from the Keswick roundabout all the way down the valley to the Grange turn off. This is due to ongoing drainage and resurfacing work, both of which are needed. Works expected to be completed by 4 February.

When will the road open? Answers on a postcard to.....

The road down Borrowdale is now fully open. All the barriers have been taken down and resurfacing machinery has toddled off elsewhere.

I've been to Buttermere maybe 50 times and never had a view like this. Most of the time you can't even see Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks. Well done!
