Negative scanners for a Windows 10

Hi everyone.

What scanners do you run on Windows 10 that Work, without using compatibility mode?

I bought a OpticFilm 7600i, not realising how old they were, and no matter what I try I can’t get the drivers to work. I looked at the newer 8100 and even then the specs state windows 8.

So I had a look at the V550 and CanoScan 9000f I think it was, and their spec sheets both state windows 8 (or lower)

I don’t want to spend any more money and have a hassle just to get the thing to run.

Cheers

Shaun

Ok, first off you might get it working if you run Vuescan. Check the Vuescan website to see if it's supported. Then you can download a free trial. However you might not like the Vuescan interface. And colour negs are more challenging than mono ones.

For 35mm I've had a Nikon LS2000 working on W10 using Vuescan, and that has a scsi connection which was another hurdle to cross.

I currently use a Nikon Coolscan V which is usb, and use it with Silverfast.

Stuff that's rated to run on W8, I've usually found to work on W10.

At a last resort you could create a new partition on your hard drive then you will have C: and D: and if you still have win7 or win8 setup disk install it on D:
I don't have any problem with Epson drivers on Win 10 and my older one 4180... the latest driver is dated 2009 and for the V750 is dated 2013..both before win 10

Thanks I’ll try that tonight, even google didn’t have an answer for me to get it working lol.

It’s a newish laptop unfortunately that came with 10. Worst OS ever, my old i3 win 7 powered laptop ran better than my current laptop

I have a V550 and it runs perfectly on Windows 10.

Cool, good to know if I decide to drop the OpticFilm from the top window lol

Plustek have a win 10 driver for the 7600i http://plustek.com/uk/support/drivers-and-downloads.html and choose opticfilm and then the model. OpticFilmOF7600i-V42
04_13L.zip

Whether Silverfast will work without paying through the nose for an upgrade is another question. I bit the bullet and paid for Vuescan Pro and can then use the same software for a Plustek 7300 , a 8200i and my Canon 9000f and even the old Epson 4950 (if I ever have a really big negative).

That’s the driver I downloaded, but at the end it just says Silverfast not found, so I assumed the install didn’t complete. Although I ran the installer in compatibility mode, I’ll re do it in normal mode, and try vuescan.

Do you have the Silverfast discs? Neither of mine came with the Silverfast discs and say that when you push the button on the scanner as it automatically looks for that software. You can however use Plustek's Quickscan software (which is a bit basic) which did come with the disc (and maybe downloadable - will take a look).

(1) It is usually the digital signature in Windows 10 that causes the problems, it is really easy to turn off - just google how to turn of digital signature in windows 10.

https://windowsreport.com/driver-signature-enforcement-windows-10/

(2) Install the scanner then go to the device manager where you will see an exclamation mark against the scanner.

(3) Open this up and click update driver

(4) Direct to where you have saved the installation files and let windows find the drivers. (Windows 7 & 8 drivers are usually compatible with Windows 10)

(5) Click install anyway when the warning window pops up saying there is not a digital signature with the driver.

(6) Restart Windows once installed.

Yeah but they just can’t find the scanner when I evtually got the discs to install

Cheers I’ll try that now

It doesn’t show up in the device manager after trying that

Just noticed an error in the above Shaun!

At No. (2) 'install scanner' - it should read just plug it in via USB.

HTH

If you plug it in via usb you should get the windows tone to say a device has been plugged in - once you go to the device manager just find where the exclamation mark is and double click on this and click update drivers.

N.B Scanner has to be turned on when plugged in via USB!

Open device manager with the scanner unplugged then plug the scanner into a different USB port whilst powered on and the device manager list should change.

Is anything showing up under hardware, printers and scanners in the settings tab?

TBH Shaun - if your computer does not recognise that there is something being plugged into it you haven't got a chance of installing it!

Reasons for this:

(1) Scanner is broken

(2) your windows install is badly corrupted. (USB drivers in Windows are faulty)

Make sure you remove silverfast from your computer completely. Try plugging in and unplugging another USB device into the computer (Digital camera) and make sure that Windows actually recognises that something is being plugged in (look in device manager and make sure it shows up). Then try plugging the scanner in on the same USB port and switching it on - if nothing shows up it suggests a problem with the scanner.

To test if it is the scanner try it on another laptop to see if that computer recognises something is being plugged in - if it does you will need to re-install the windows 10 OS USB Drivers.

I have used Vuescan for years it will drive any scanner with any version of windows.
You can download a trial version to check it out.

Though the basic version of windows 10 seems to preclude just about all third party software.

But Vuescan will not work if the computer can't see the hardware, it has to 'see' the hardware before the correct drivers for it can be selected.

Other USB devices work fine. I’ve got an old laptop with win 8 on, just need to get a keyboard to plug into it as one of the keys broke that is part of the password haha. But I think it’s the scanner after trying everything under the sun. Thanks for your time trying to help this evening mate.

Tried that too mate, honestly including last night I’ve put about 6-7 hours in trying to get it working. The guy said he’ll refund me so not all is lost. Just need to decide now between a v550 or a 9000f

No problems Shaun - see how you get on with the Windows 8 laptop - if the hardware doesn't show up when you plug it in then it is faulty, just remember it may not show as a scanner until the drivers are installed - it may just show as an unrecognised device.

Noritsu LS-600 With Windows 10 Drivers!

..nice but expensive for home use (or for convenience) but only for 35mm :( when filmdev use a Noritsu and it would take many years to break even for costs i.e. DIY ver Filmdev and the thought of breaking down and expensive repairs would be worrying.

For anyone in a pickle with scanner installation, make sure that there's only one scanner driver installed for any given scanner, otherwise Windows can get confused. If any doubt, uninstall everything (once you've decided what software / driver to use), restart and and begin again. It may help. As might a registry cleaner.

I don't recall that Silverfast is any more expensive than Vuescan, if you get the SE version, but it is retailed as being dedicated to the particular scanner that you bought it for whereas Vuescan will work with anything, more or less.
