A couple of (very) late uploads from Wast Water from the Lake District week away

That's not this shot?

Dedication by Steven, on Flickr

I thought I was slow still having a roll from the peaks needing done!

It's actuallyfrom a little further around. @Woodsy and @ChrisR and I went for a wander further round the lake and got about 2 minutes of good light where I managed to grab the shot, and also drop a lens. tbh I'm not sure where that shot is, I've got a second one taken later from a little further round but the lightling is much worse - I think I've got a couple of sheets actually sitting undeveloped still that that must be in!

I've got a whole bunch of stuff that's been developed and just never had the time taken to go through and scan it properly, plus quite a few undeveloped rolls - it's like an illness (or incredible laziness more likely :p)

Yes, I like Portra 800 and use it 'for best' in dull conditions, however, I believe it also works well in winter/spring sunshine too. The colours seem more saturated than Portra 400, which to be honest I've not been all that impressed with. Perhaps do a search on Flickr for Portra 800 and look at results from a number of different photographers and for 35mm and 120? Bearing in mind, the detail displayed will depend on what scanner they've used and the size and resolution it's been uploaded at. It should give you a feel for what to expect from the film before you press the 'buy it now' option.

Edit: Here's an example on 6x9 120 Portra 800 taken indoors hand-held on a dullish day with a 1950s Voigtlander Bessa 1 folding camera (scanned on an Epson V600 at 4800 DPI res [before I knew any better!] resized to 25cm wide and 300 DPI in Photoshop Elements to reduce the original 80mb file!). Not a wonderful photo but It should give you an idea of the grain structure and colour saturation, etc.

Edit 2: Here's a 35mm shot taken with Canon EOS-3 and 24-105 L IS on a dull, rainy October afternoon (scanned on V600 at 3200 DPI and resized to 25cm high at 300 DPI in PE again). Hope this is useful, you'll have to look on Flickr for how it works on a sunny day!

There's Superia 800 (and 1600) as well, though it seems pretty expensive too (fleabay prices I saw from £8-£15 or so for a roll). A comparison of the two suggested that the Superia gave a "flatter" feel, which apparently some people like...

If you're going to be shooting in artificial or mixed light, Cinestill 800T might be better, as it's tungsten balanced. If you're shooting in daylight, Portra 800 is usually better, as it is daylight balanced. Under tungsten lighting, daylight-balanced film effectively loses two stops of sensitivity (and, for best results, really needs an 80b or similar filter to balance colours).

Ultimately though, you can make both work.

For any important events or holidays, I like to have these films handy. Portra 800 is really quite flexible because it looks great overexposed, so can be used all day. Although it does have great latitude too, I only use Cinestill 800T for nighttime shots because of the lack of anti-halation layer, which can create a bit of halo around reddish/orangish light sources.

@Carl Hall - Only just seen your post about Portra 800. Is it worth the expense? 100%, yes! My favourite film stock in both 35mm and 120. I shoot it on sunny days for a certain look as well as when the light levels are lower. It is expensive though so when there are offers on eBay and what not, I usually grab some then.

That last image I posted I with it as well as these... (mixture of 645, 6x7 and 35mm)

Thanks for the input everyone :) I thought about it for a while and then decided to try it, so I've bought three rolls of 35mm to take on holiday. Light wise, I think I'll use it in the evening when it's a bit darker, but being in a city there will be a mix of lighting.

Think I paid a smige over £10 a roll from 7dayshop, so compared to the £8 a roll of Portra 400, it's not really that much more.

It'll be a few weeks before I use it and then another few before I get the scans, so I'll try and post my results up towards the end of March :D

One more from the same trip I don't think has made it on here either yet:

Love the pinhole image Charlotte, it makes we want to break out my homemade camera again

Great shot, Chris. I think a few minutes after this you drew my attention to some strong crepuscular rays coming over those hills to the left and landing on the little white house. The result on Reala 100 is one of my favourite shots, even though I didn't get anywhere near capturing the full effect of those rays.

Put a quick roll through the RZ to make sure everything's working okay. As the weather has been particularly cack for the past few days I had to take use what I could find in the house. This is the corner of a Telecaster guitar that has some very nice shapes.
Have to say that the camera is an absolute pleasure to use and can't wait to have some decent subject matter to give it a blast. The 110mm 2.8 is just such a nice lens, and at the distance I took this shot (around 14") has a very shallow DoF even at F16!

Due off on another adventure soon, this time a little closer to home. Having a stress about which camera(s) to take......would feel bad leaving this one behind. Here's Ara on the Hasselblad and Kodak Ektar 100 in Iceland.

Don’t stress. You know it should be ‘blad & ‘blad :)

Nice shot Rob

Large format 4x5 shot of my daughter. Ilford hp5 Linhof Master Technika Xenotar 150mm 2.8 lens.

That is one patient little girl and a very nice portrait. HP5 isn't half bad in 5x4!

I always wondered what happened to the Minox 35GT that I once had, since I couldn't recall getting rid of it and could never find it. I was looking for something else the other day and was surprised and delighted to find the Minox tucked away in a box of other stuff, so goodness knows why I had put it there. The battery check button even showed some life left after all these years, so a roll of HP5+ was duly loaded and I had a run out to Hopeman and Findhorn to test it. The meter didn't seem to be working properly, but it seems to have been exposing OK. This was devved in HC-110 dil E today.

What a nice story, Peter. Interesting shots too, though the grain in #4 and #5 is something else!

Thanks Chris. I've read that HC-110 is meant to be a longlasting liquid version of D76, but I'm not so sure about that. It worked well with the roll of Acros I developed yesterday, but maybe it just isn't a good match with HP5+ as far as grain is concerned.
