Just ordered the new V6 box seeing as its a free upgrade to the Tivo box, has anyone got one and are they better than the old Tivo box

Short answer yes. The fact you can record 6 programmes is a real bonus. It is also quicker than the old tivo box.

Free upgrade? Tell me more, please
I was called a few months back by Virgin and given this same offer too. No contract extension or charges applicable, just a "would you like a V6 box?".

Naturally, I jumped at it.

Yes its much better. TiVo 1 was pretty useless using apps like Netflixs. Mines gone now along with the rest of virgins package.

Go to your VM account online and the link is on there, you answer a few questions and that's it, its free if you plug it in yourself or £49 for them to come out and do it, its only plugging the coax and an HDMI cable in really then it does the rest

I thought there was a charge even if you did it your self? maybe its changed since i got an email about it

They've just announced free upgrades - V6 box is very good, lots faster on the menu etc

hmmm tempted. although recording 6 things at once isn't something i'd use - i'll have a look - thanks! faster menus would be good

Obviously there's more than that. Wifi or ethernet connected means netflix, iplayer etc are faster responding, more storage

Our old Tivo box had seemingly ground to a halt to the point it was almost unusable. Virgin sent us a V6 box a couple of weeks back to replace it. It is hugely better. So much faster and more responsive. Another big plus is that the remote doesn't rely on line of sight so we can leave our wooden tv cabinet thing's doors closed. Other features are nice enough but the speed is the thing you'll notice most.

So glad this post appeared as my tivo is slower than the old dial up connection. It’s almost as if virgin wanted me to replace it just like *cough Apple do with their phones.... allegedly

how do you know if it works with your exisiting hub, think mine is a few years old now. my friend upgraded and said he has issues setting it up but looks like no issues for you guys.

was it just plug and play? & do you send old one back?

VM know what equipment you have and send the new hub with the kit if your old one isn't compatible, its all on the VM website, you have to also input the box you are upgrading if you have more than one like us

Its definitely free if you self-install. Upgraded ours a couple of weeks ago, it should only take about 30 minutes. The V6 is much better than the old TiVo with way quicker response. The new hub is good too.

The free upgrade included the Hub if it’s an older version. I have 2 x V6 boxes with the 300 mbps Internet. And yes it has dropped out once or twice but so did Sky before I changed.

If anyone wants discount getting Virgin let me know I think it’s currently £50 [emoji106]

just gone through the process and you lose anything stored on your old box, and i have a bunch of stuff saved so thats more important to me than the new box at this point. sure i'll get forced into it eventually but i dont want to lose all that stuff

We git the V6 upgrade recently. Far far better than the origianal tivo.

I did request a new hub with my upgrade alas i didn't get one so our V6 box is hooked up to the original super hub 1 and works just fine.

well that's annoying. i have films saved on there to avoid buying dvds & taking up more room and just other stuff that is unlikely to crop up again. i understand the licensing reasons, but the recordings are still just for me, even if they are on another box. you'd think there would be some sort of allowance made. i know thats not how copy right works but whats the point in a 500mb tivo box if you're not going to keep some of the recordings long term. my life won't end if i dont have them but at this point i wouldn't voluntarily scrap them

one of the big reasons I upgraded over a year ago was the ability to receive 4k content and up to now the only way to get anything 4k is on the Netflix app.As a result I'm looking at going back to Sky with a Sky Q box. I had a bit of a look at one the other week and the menu's and operation seem way slicker than the V6 box with some channels broadcasting in UHD.

Because copyright. They can't allow you to remove recordings from the box. It's not like you replace the box regularly.

I don`t think it is as easy as just plugging in and away you go. We have our TV on the wall then the VM box with cable is over 12ft away on the other wall.

But presumably just an HDMI cable in between which both boxes use. Our's was definitely plug and play. Though I think my wife had to call VM to get it initialised once it was physically installed.

As they are doing it for Free, I will leave it to them but I do look forward to getting the V6 box :)

Power supply to the V6 box, HDMI cable to the TV. It can link to the internet using wifi.

Can you not keep the old box and plug it back in when you want to watch the old recordings?

The old box would also need to be plugged into the mains and HMDI so it's all already there. That's what I was getting at.

What deal is that? I am leaving Sky to join Virgin. Signed up two days ago for a fair bit more than £50.
