No
So i've inherited a satellite dish in the house i've just moved into. Before i rip it all out is there anything i can plug it into to get some use out of it? I dont want sky but if i can plug it into anything to get some free channels then so be it.

Freesat box from Currys (or elsewhere). A basic box without the facility to record should be under £100 and will give the the normal free channels plus catch up via your broadband. Make sure you get a Freesat box, not a Freeview box. Freeview's the one that needs an aerial.

Is there any advantage in Freesat over Freeview?

I think there can be. My wife used to live in Dumfries & Galloway, which is pretty rural. The Freesat signal with all the channels was available everywhere, but the Freeview signal was dependent on the topography and the location of the transmitters and repeaters (or whatever they're called). You could only get 7 - 8 channels in her village, and some places couldn't get any.

Some difference in channels, there's more available on the satellite but all the main ones will be the same.

/going on from what Martyn said ^ you should be able to get the different regional variations on BBC etc. via satellite if you happen to want to.

ok thanks peeps. it doesn't seem to offer much over whats built into the tv but at least i can plug it into the bedroom tv without the need for a little arial.

Get a Humax freesat box rather than something from Curries. They do refurbished boxes in their online shop, you still get a warranty but the prices are very good.

The prices are a bit rich though. What's the difference between those and the £30 or £40 hobbies you send on Amazon. I dont need recording, this is just for the telly in the bedroom. The lounge TV has a TV Arial socket so that's fine. The cable from the dish runs through the bedroom so I can plug the telly into that.

i see plenty of sky boxes for sale for very little money which would do for free sat
you just need a free to air card off sky which cost about 25 quid one time payment and that's about it

Yes a satellite dish useful. The arial signal here is ok for non hd but useless for hd. So our dish is great.

Since when? I certainly still get 4hd

Someone on another forum got the following:

We’re sorry to announce that All 4 and 4HD will be leaving Freesat on Thursday 22nd February, 2018.

Channel 4 is still available in standard definition, but any recordings you have scheduled for 4HD will need to be re-set in SD (via channel 104).

E4, More 4, 4seven and Film4 remain unaffected and can be accessed via the TV guide as usual, but the rollback guide and catch-up TV for all of the Channel 4 channels will no longer be available via your Freesat box.

If you have any questions about these changes please read our Q&A here, and to find out where else you can watch All 4 please visit all4.com/how-to-watch

Apologies, I missed the bit where you said you didn't need recording. ;)

Currently watching 4hd on freesat.
We can’t get freeview or any terrestrial signal through an Aerial here.

We've windmills in line with the transmitter, so depending and weather and wind direction, the windmills can disrupt Freeview TV channel and make it unwatchable, we've also got Freesat because of this, so if the channel is on Freesat, can still watch :)

Weird. I definitely still get 4hd, was watching it last night.

I still have 4HD in my guide but I'm not sure if you are actually watching HD or if it reverts to SD

According to an email I got from Freesat and their website it was turned off on 22/02

Edit, just checked mine and 4HD now says this channel is scrambled or not available.
