Nikon D850 - Owners Thread

I've used an Ex-Pro En-EL18 in my battery grip (with BL-5) and it's fine, I've also used Ex-Pro batteries in other Nikon cameras with excellent result ... I don't know anything about the ones you link to.

I had about 6 batteries with for my D810 some were compatibles, however when I got my D850 I'd say only 50% worked in it, don't remember the makes though.

Thanks to all. I've taken the plunge and ordered the Ex Pro battery. Once I've used it for a while I'll check back here and let you know how it performs

Don't forget it will need 3-4 charges before having full capacity (not just these make).

What have you owners settled on by way of memory cards for the D850 ?
I have a 32gb XQD and a 32gb UHS1 card to use but can see me needing something bigger.
I'm not a serial 'machine-gunner' and have never yet used the video part of a camera so don't need the fastest cards, but equally, I don't want to grow out of whatever I buy.
Also, for those who use XQD's, what card reader do you use ?

32gb isn't too bad to be honest, I've got a 64gb G Series XQD but I haven't filled it yet and I only use UHS-1 SD cards as overflow and it hasn't restricted me in any way with my type of photography. I use a Lexar USB reader:

May need to search around to find one available, especially at a decent price ... I got mine at £24 a while back but I've seen them at £80 now!

Thanks Gramps.
I need to do some looking - it seems that XQD's are possibly OTT for me, and a fair bit more expensive, but as I said, I don't want to find myself needing more if I buy cheap.
However, a new camera and all the bits that it involves means funds are tight...

XQD prices have gone through the roof since Lexar bowed out, there are still some slower cards out there at less money and unless you are 'gunning-it' they would be fine, at least for now.

..and thats another thing - if its only Sony who are making them, are they still going to be around in a few years, which might make SD cards a better bet...

It's not only DSLR's that use them, they are widely used in the commercial video industry so there is a demand :)

Ah, I didn't know that..
Not sure it makes my decision any easier though..!
Just use the XQD and SD that you have for the moment, I would be surprised if you find them limiting ... it's always nice to think you have what is perceived as 'the best' but if you don't really need it then it doesn't matter.

You are a wise man.....!

Ok, so I’m on the fence at the moment if I am going to take a huge plunge into the unknown and swap from my D750 for the Sony A7riii or stick with what’s familiar and get the D850. I know both have pros and cons and are quite different, and tbh a lot will depend on how I find the ergonomics and balance with the Sony.

However, I do need to weigh up other options such as long term cost etc. If I go down the D850 route I know I’ll need the grip to get the higher frame rate, and I know that this comes at a considerable cost as you need to buy the battery and charger too. What are the prices of the grip, battery and charger? Are there any third party options available yet?

Also, XQD cards are rather pricey and I was wondering if you can use the SD card as primary and the XQD as backup (as I have jpeg backups so take up less room) and if you did this whether it would affect frame rate and buffer (using Sandisk extreme pro 95mb/s)?

I can’t speak for the grip but I don’t believe there are any 3rd party options currently.
As for XQD, you can set it as the backup (like you can with most dual slot cameras).......

There ARE 3rd party grips, but from what I've read they don't give the increased shooting speed ( I think one or two claim to though )
I was in the exact same situation and sold my D750 (and a D500 I had briefly) for an 850 and whilst I am still curious about the A7iii the familiarity of the Nikon was a big factor - it took me so long to get used to zooming the Nikon way when I moved from Canon. ..

What about lens cost?
Will you still be able to use your sigma 150-600 with the Sony?
Also, it depends what else you shoot. Plain fact is Nikon has a lot more lenses to choose from.

Thanks, need to keep an eye on the third party ones then, no point if you don’t get the extra frame rate. Do you need the D5 battery to get the extra frame rate too?

It’s the Tamron I have but no I’d have to swap, probably for the 100-400mm in the future.

One of the pros of the Sony for me is having a one system setup rather than Nikon and Olympus. My biggest concerns with it are the ergonomics but I can’t get my hands on one to try, nowhere near me has a display model to try.

Do you shoot a lot of moving stuff Toby?

Why would you get rid of the Oly if you get a Sony, and not the Nikon, the Sony is quite large with their lenses?

Sony with 24-70mm f4 is pretty comparable to the EM1 with 12-40mm. No such option for Nikon, the D750 or D850 with 24-120mm f4 is considerably bulkier and heavier.

Quite a bit. The biggest need for good AF is shooting the London marathon as I’m shooting for Arthritis Research and not myself so I have to have something to deliver. The D750 has been up to the task and apparently the A7riii is on par or even better than the D750 so ‘should’ be OK. The D850 should cope with ease.

Well, as I said a few miles back, waiting to see what Nikon launch at Photokina seems logical to me, bearing in mind how much this equipment costs.
No hints that they'll announce a mirrorless any time soon, and there won't be a replacement for the D850. I've no interest in a D760, but that's probably the most likely camera to be announced, if any.

So after trying an A7rii out today (unfortunately they didn’t have a mark iii) it’s looking more likely that I’ll be getting the D850. Has anyone used the Tamron 150-600mm on the D850 and can comment on whether all the focus points work at all focal lengths? When I tried the Tamron on the D500 the outer focus points stopped working beyond about 520mm and it behaved like an f8 aperture lens setup, ie just the central strip of AF points worked. As the D850 shares a similar AF system I wondered if it would be the same? I hope not.

The first is a FF: 600 ƒ4 + D850, the second is a crop on the first…

I'm not sure it will help much, but my Sigma 150-600 works perfectly fine on my D850..
