I've been flooded with calls in the last 48 hours some pre recorded messages others with a live caller all claiming to be from BT calling about the security of my internet connection using various numbers and withheld numbers.

If you get one, DONT pay any attention to it, its definitely a scam and please let any older people you know who use the net know about it as they are the most likely targets.

Hot one last week and being a bit bored I played along, they asked for password etc

Made it all up...... took the prat 8 minutes to realise he was on a loser.

Interestingly, I had only upgraded my BT call blocking services last week! Suspicious moi?

They will catch some people out.

Another Scam is that your Sky card will stop working in a week, a loud "Whoopie" down the Phone works in instant disconnection.

And there,s the one that says they are not selling me anything but want to ask me 2 questions, so they say is your name "xxxx" and I say well that's the 1st Question whats the 2nd and they go, just like that.

I use that when stopped on the street with "Hi, can I ask you a couple of questions?" I reply with "That's one." which usually gets a reply of "One what?" or similar which is their second question.

This is one of the reasons why we got new BT phones with Call Guardian on - nothing gets through now :)

As they have been so good, we got parents in law a set - one of the reasons was in case they were off their guard and received a scam call and proceeded...

We use 'should I answer' on our mobiles which blocks loads.
We hardly get any calls on the landline at all anymore, mainly my father :)

BT sent an email with a discount price for their new Premium Phone, with prices that seem to be cheaper than other suppliers, so based on the comments in this thread I've ordered some new phones and paid for CLI on my BT line - now looking forward to having a bit of peace on the phone line!

Given the recent increase in spam calls, I guess BT will do well in their handset sales.

I had that phone call and I pointed out that I was not with BT for my broadband. The chap told me that everyone was with BT. I played along with him a bit (keeps him from ringing anyone else for a bit) pretending to be even thicker than I really am. "Do you have a PC or laptop?" - "yes". "PC or Laptop?" - "Yes. I have both." silence. "I have a tablet as well. Is that any good?" "Your PC - is it Windows or Mac?" - "No." He gave up after a few minutes.

I had a cracker this morning

Brrrrrring Brrrrring

No ?

This is BT - about your internet connection

what's Internet ?

He tried again

what's Internet

He rang off

Last year I had one of those 'This is Microsoft and there is something wrong with your computer" calls. I kept them talking for nearly 15 minutes until I grew tired of the game and said, "I'm sorry I still don't understand why you are calling me as my computer is an iMac", instant end of call. :D

My elderly mother had one of those 'You have a virus on your computer' phone calls last year... she let the chap rabbit on and ask her to press various keys and enter various text and played along with him. After about 5 minutes she got bored with him trying to tell her how to enter something on the computer and said "Can I let you into a secret?". He asked what it was, and she answered "I haven't got a computer!" At which point the chap went mad with her, shouting "You lied to me, you lied to me!". To which she replied "Well you started it, you told me you were from Microsoft!". End of call! :D

I too had one of the "Microsoft Technical Support" calls, they caught me on a quiet day, so I thought I'd see how long I could keep them going. After playing the slow old man, needing time to get upstairs because of my dodgy leg and playing a bit deaf etc. we got to the point of looking at event logs in Windows, this took a long time because I kept pressing the wrong key. The guy thought he was onto something, I let him get to the point of me handing over a credit card number, when I accusing him of being thieving scum.

The "technical specialist" then lost his temper with me and started shouting at me "you will die today!" I'm happy to report that I didn't die and I took 40 minutes of his time when could have been trying it on with more vulnerable people.

Trouble is, they have your phone number but you don't have theirs, so I don't wind them up too much! The last one I had, I let him tell me I had a virus on my computer, and played along for a 30 seconds or so with the 'Oh dear, that's very worrying" routine. Then I asked him which computer he thought it might be... as I was sitting in a room with 300 of them in it. He hung up!

The time before that I tackled the chap about his call, saying that I thought this was a scam and that he was just trying to take money off me... then I asked him what his mother and grandmother would think of him if they knew he was doing this. "They would be ashamed of you, wouldn't they?" There was total silence for a good 10 seconds, then he hung up. I hope this might have made him think about what he was doing.

That's a good idea, I will try the grandparents question next time I get one. My new phone should arrive in the next few days and they can talk to the machine and spam calls should be a thing of the past.

Another one to watch out for... My wife received a text which appeared to be from an official Whatsapp number (it appeared in the same message thread as other genuine messages from Whatsapp). The message read "You have requested to transfer your number to another device. This change will be made within 24hrs. If you did not make this request please call 0902 394 0131".

Googling it the number quoted seems to vary the last four digits but it is definitely a scam baiting you to ring a very premium rate number.
