I'm going to buy a new SSD - having the LR catalog and images on an external USB hdd is killing me..
You should really always have your main software and files on the main drive, preferably SSD (I can't cope with HDD ;))

I've got mine in a normal spin drive and also on external HDD and it's perfectly fine though even on 42mp files.just build 1.1 previews when exporting

Everything will be sooooo slow ;)

as I scroll my wheel to go from one image to a next, it quickly shows me 6-7 in quick succession then pauses whilst the external usb hdd gets more

Not on 1.1 previews enabled and built. Ssd Is too expensive to use for RAWS

i'd use it for import, then move it to external after - I want everything instant, I cannot wait a second for an image - I need to scroll 10 images in a second.

200gb currently. i should probably split it into multiple catalogs now

a full RAW import could be 256GB (unlikely will be) but 2 x 128GB cards
Why is it so big? My LR catalogue is just over a GB, then a further 20GB taken up with previews. I set it so that previews are deleted after 30 days, if I ever want to go back and edit I can just rebuild the previews then.

I have my working files on the SSD then offload the old RAWs onto external drives. With what you spend on gear I'm sure you can afford an SSD :p

mine is set to discard 1:1 after 30 days, my only issue with getting an SSD is there's no where to mount it

You took an average of 30 photos per hour 24x7 for the last 30 days....that's a seriously itchy trigger finger! How many photos of your dog do you actually need

Funny you should say that... i'm optimizing the catalog at the moment.... out of 280 photos not sure i'll have one that I care to keep.... ( I need to make sure they work in 1:1 square format for Louise's Instagram)

I was trying to provoke her into a run, as I ran ahead of her, bending over with the camera held low to the ground, shooting 35mm

What's the size of the actual catalogue, and what't the size of the file relating to your previews?

the actualy catalog is 2.5gb and the preview files are 184GB

although i told it delete 1:1 after a day, still hasn't shrunk the catalog preview size at all..

Rules sometimes can be ignored, but not with horizons in landscapes, especially when there's a large body of water in the scene (unless you've done it deliberately such as 45 degrees to look 'arty' ;)) In any case, in Jonney's pic nothing's straight, the fence posts and bench are leaning to the right too ;)

Completely agreed. In an image like that, get your horizon straight 100% of the time.

Yea.dont you build 1.1 previews? helps a lot plus the new update increases performance

I used to be able to start processing images whilst they were still importing before I used the external USB hdd, now it shows me 20 images and I have to wait ages before it shows the rest.

I will try a 500gb USB 3.0 SSD drive I have and see if that improves matters....

I can process whilst it's importing, but it's not as quick as when I've left it to build 1:1 previews. Not bad though which is good as I'm too impatient to wait for previews to finish building ;)

Ahhh I think these codes are linked to user accounts, tried Dan's and it didn't work.
They must activate it on their end for certain people who spend x amount of money at WEX etc.

Yes they are account linked, I tried to use a code my wife had to order some stuff but it rejected it, rang up and they applied the code over the phone but only as we have same surname and address!!

They have just emailed me a £1000 off a GFX code.......

When's it arriving? :p

I don't think USB3 is as fast as having a SSD in your computer. Using USB is no go. period. Too slow and frustrating.

I have a 500GB SSD in my iMac, I import to hard drive for processing. They stay on hard drive till they are printed or exported. Then dumped in amazon cloud and deleted.

I have a MacBook Pro i5 2.4Ghz and 8GB RAM.
Main OS & LR Drive is a 480GB SSD
Secondary LR & Backup Drive is 1TB SSD
External LR & Backup Drive is a 1TB SSD
Also backing up to s 2TB iCloud.

Looking to buy a new 2015 MacBook Pro or iPad Pro.

External SSD is freaking rapid via usb3. Usb is not slow.
