When I transfer photos from the camera to my D drive after the upload the new folder appears in my D drive but also on the desktop as a full folder and not a shortcut, this also happens if I create a new folder in the D drive. If I try to delete either folder they both are removed to the recycle bin.

This started out of nowhere about 2 months ago all on its own maybe after after a windows update, I’m running windows 10.

This is starting to fill my desktop up now so getting annoying, any help greatly appreciated.

What are you using to transfer? A number of programs like Photoshop, Photo Mechanic include an option to "make a second copy to..." I wonder if it's that?

Using canon utility. but if i make a new folder in the drive it will appear on the desktop as well so uploading is not the problem

Time for a wee search of your settings on the PC.

Right click on your Desktop icon then have a look to see what the location is set to. Maybe it's been set to the D: drive?

Open File Explorer.

Somewhere you'll see a Desktop line, like this,

upload_2018-4-29_7-52-46.png

right click on the word Desktop and choose properties. In the properties dialog, choose the location tab.

upload_2018-4-29_7-53-30.png

A 'normal' location will look like that (might say D:\Users\....) And obviously it'll have your user name, not mine.

If yours just says D:\ on its own, then it's been changed.

You've not said where on the D: drive you upload new photos to, so I assume you just create a new folder in D:\ but if you use D:\Pictures (or something), then you'll probably see your desktop location is set to that too.

You need to be careful changing it, I suspect you would use Find Target and then choose C:\Users\YourName\Desktop but it's not possible to be 100% sure remotely.

Hi Tony thanks for that but I don’t have a desktop folder (First time I have noticed that)

File explorer.jpg
I looks like somewhere along the line my desktop folder has gone missing as I don’t have a desktop folder in file explorer, the D drive is now appears to be this pc which would explain why everything is being mirrored on the desktop.

I have 2 hard drives C drive is a SSD 128gb and a normal hard drive for D drive 1TB, to save space on the C drive i moved my Downloads/Documents/Pictures to the D drive on first setting the laptop up I don’t remember trying to move the Desktop though.

On trying to a system restore to go back to an earlier point in time I found The system protection was turned off so no restore points This was working as i have gone back to a previous restore point some weeks ago.

I did find this

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...e/9f4b56ab-c683-4da6-9100-fa58b128320f?auth=1

So I will back up all my stuff before giving it a go, if all else fails I can always reformat the C drive.

Think I’m sorted

Moved the folders Downloads/Documents/Pictures back to their default location, found the desktop folder in the windows C drive / Users, and clicked default location even though it was saying the location was the the C drive.

Looks like everything is where its suppose to be and the desktop folder is back in the file explorer.

Thanks all.

From your earlier picture the D:\ at the top is your Desktop, look at the picture next to it.

Glad your all sorted now, you can still move things around if you want but rather than just selecting D:\ create a folder on D say called Work and then move Documents to D:\Work\Documents, you can then also move your Desktop to D:\Work\Desktop etc.

If there are multiple users on the computer the consider creating a folder called D:\Work\<your name> and then move the folders into that folder, that will allow you to keep things separated from the other users on that computer should you also want to redirect their folders too.
