I am moving house to a smaller place in a few weeks. I have 8 film cameras but have been told I need to cut it down to one !!!! I have chosen my little Olympus Trip 35 as the one to keep. I just love the thing.

If you had to choose one film camera which would it be & why ?

Ta, Christian.

Under no pressure to downsize thankfully. The good lady knows the value of my camera stuff & is probably looking forward to getting her hands on it should I croak first. Same for my other vice, the model kit collection.

To answer the original question though, probably my Nikon F2A.

A more interesting question is -

What the heck have you got that you'd choose an Olympus Trip over, are they all like.....pinholes or something..:)

In the unlikely event of having to drop to one camera, I'd have to go with practicality for what I photograph and the best camera to do it with rather than sentimental value which doesn't add to the value of the photographs. So my camera of choice would be my Walker Titan SF 5x4.

If I found that dropping to one camera was a result of physical infirmity and inability to manage anything as heavy as the Walker, I'd probably seriously consider disposing of everything in favour of a Rollieflex (I don't have one) as giving a reasonable negative size in a reasonably light package. Or struggle on with my Mamiyaflex C330f which was given to me by a friend (it was his father's) as he wanted it to go to a if not good home, at least one where it would be used :) (The struggle is with the weight since that's what I'm considering as a reason for dropping down - it's light for me at the moment as I'm only 69, but I'll probably get older* - but heavier than a Rolleiflex/cord. I'm happy with the handling.)

* The alternative would mean that I wouldn't have to make any hard decisions on equipment :D

Can't you store the others in the loft, at a mates house, storage depot, you really have to get rid of your others, surely a compromise could be found. I think I might store mine in the boot if my car.

Jeez. The notion of having to cut my kit down to a single camera makes me shiver.

Entertaining the idea though, I'd never part with my Ebony 5x4 camera. Even if film is ever no longer made for it, It'll not be sold. I learnt my lesson selling my FM3a once and it's a lesson I won't forget!

Also, it's a camera big enough that I could hide a camera or two inside it if required :D

I'd get another wife.
I'd be inclined to agree on that notion... but it would beg getting re-married first, to have a wife to replace... and after the first one I am in absolutely NO rush to do that!

The camera count in this house is more than I have fingers for... I can see half a dozen from where I am sat, and theres probably as many again just out of site I could see if I stood up or shifted a box or bit of paper!

Kodak Retinette..... My grandfathers preciouse 35mm camera... its not a camera, its a bit of family history... This would be non negotiable!
Konika C35.... My other Grandad's camera; "Clever people these Japaneses!", another bit of Family history, not a camera, not negotiable!
Ziess Ikonta folder... My Gt Uncle's camera; the subject of much argument between Grandad and Uncle at family gatherings over the merits of 120 vs 35mm, yet more family history, not a camera, not negotiable.....
Olympus XA2 number one..... with a scratched lens.... numbers two and three are in perfect working order and much better cosmetic condition, but No! was my 11th birthday present, and traveled around the world with me taking probably half of my 35mm photo's for twenty years.... more History, not a camera, not negotiable...
Is there a pattern forming yet?

WHAT!!!! USELESS CLUTTER!!!!! I retort indignantly..... tell you what... go into the bathroom and count how many bottles of lotions, potions and brews there are in there... then come back and tell me how many of them have any more than dregs in the bottom, and how many you have actually used in the last year.....you want to talk about USELESS CLUTTER, maybe we should go see how many unused bettaware upside down chicken roasting racks or microwave potato-baking spikes there are..... ooh, yeah, a lot of them may have been left behind by the ex... yes, you CAN chuck that useless clutter away.... But the CAMERAS!!!!! Not a chance!!!

In that situation I'd be asking my wife to cut down to one hand bag and one pair of shoes.............

;)

Funny you should mention that :)

My wife has just bought a new bag. Apparently she needs it for her holiday.

Surely you can pack them into a box rather than getting rid of them? Keep one out for use, and then pack the other seven away in a cardboard box (lots of bubble wrap, of course). I have loads of crap that I would get rid of before any cameras. Although, I am a bit of a hoarder and I'm always keeping things that look interesting just on the off chance that I can find a use for them one day, so I have a lot of stuff to throw out!

... so I have a lot of stuff to throw out!

Our garage has tea chests stacked two high, 3 across and down the length of the garage except for space near the door. We brought this stuff back from Oz, but it was a slow boat so we'd bought replacements for most of it by the time it arrived. Every year or so my OH makes me get some chests out, we unpack parts of the (they're beautifully packed), decide we have nowhere to store them usefully, but can't really bear to sell or give away much of it, so they get packed up again and put away! Every time I rebel and predict what will happen, but get over-ruled. Anyway, I'm not to worried about the space cameras take up!
