The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

It will take a good few years at the very least before we start seeing them at major events.
Sony need to announce the FE 300mm, 500mm and 600mm G Master lenses to start with, the Sony A9 II should address more shortcomings of the Sony bodies etc.
The Sony A9 is the first model in the A9 series, things can only get better.

It is quite interesting how Sony will further open the gap on Nikon/Canon with the A9II. As surely the A9II will come before any new revisions of the Z series or the EOS R.

The A9 already feels a generation or 2 ahead. So the improvement of Canon and Nikon needs to be drastic, similar to what A72 to A73 has done to close the gap.

:D

Sorry I didn’t mean it like that. It’s a work purchase so the money doesn’t really matter.

I’ve not used the 90mm but had a look in the shop. Looks very nice and gets good reviews. Sony’s 50mm looks like the budget option and I’ve no idea what the new sigma is like - but 70mm is a bit short for macro imo.

So this weekend I picked up my new 400mm 2.8 and managed to get a small test with the A9 down at Dubai Autodrome.

Initial thoughts - wow, it's light.

Been shooting with the A9 since June last year and quickly fell in love with the system, but was waiting desperately some something to replace my Nikon 400/600mm. This really is a breath of fresh air, weighing less than half of my 600mm f/4 and considerably lighter than my old D4s.

The focus is fast, supremely fast, and so accurate. I don't tend to shoot more than 10fps, however I did some stuff at 20fps to see how well it tracked at such fast frame rates and it really didn't miss a beat. Tracking is fast and accurate, even with the cars travelling towards the camera and with headlights on.

I can't wait now for the season to kick back off in October and it will be so much easier to walk around Yes and Dubai during the 12h/24h races and F1 over three days without killing myself so much.

Now, Sony, all I want is a 200mm 1.8 or 2.0 to complete my perfect lens lineup.

Not got anything worthwhile to share yet (everything I was shooting was for Sony), but will share samples in due time.

Yeah to be honest I was thinking 90mm was a bit short.

Wow, amazing comments and probably the first owner on here who has the FE 400mm f2.8 GM.
Is that a genuine Sony eye-cup you have for the A9? :)

Watching that guy from Ninedots doing his A7iii review, lots of useful info if you haven’t checked it out. Mainly aimed at wedding photographers though.

Already seen it, surprised he doesn’t use Eye-AF much, that’s one of the first things I missed when running the Fuji system before moving back to Sony.
There are quite a few YouTuber’s running Sony systems now.

Wow sensational

And the amazing Laowa 60mm f2.8 ultra (2X) macro lens. And the well regarded macro classic the Tamron 90mm. Need we go on? :)

There's also the MF Voigtlander 60mm f2, not a true macro but it does get good reviews but if the 90mm is too short for f2.8's use then 60mm is too.

Just a quick reminder of the Sony and Zeiss events/possible announcements coming up...

https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5...ember-18-expect-new-lenses-and/#disqus_thread

We live in interesting times :D

I’m keen to see what Zeiss come out with their fixed lens full-frame camera....
I reckon it’ll have the following:-

A 35mm or 50mm f1.8 lens.
Full-frame Sony 50mp BSI sensor with IBIS
A fully weather sealed body with dual SD slots
A 5 million pixel EVF
Interesting times indeed. :)

Well adapted glass doesn't work very well on head on bikes!!! The latest EF 300 f2.8 IS L MKII just wouldn't track so need to start saving up for the 70-200 f2.8 first i guess.

Did result to a not very reliable way of pre focus again and was impressed with the detail of files even compared to my 1DX MKII.

Found eye A/F very hit and miss using Canon glass on the grid also but when it worked it was brilliant but when it didn't i just wouldn't regain focus for ages.

Still early days but may have to juggle some Canon glass around and replace with native Sony, will hire some for my final outing this season at Brands.

Few little quirks compared to the Fuji X-T2 as seem to keep adjusting the volume every time i scroll through images at the moment and the size of the single A/F point is bloody massive LOL.

Detail from the sensor is incredible and the colours are a lot better than i expected.

It'll be interesting to see if it's a bigger hit than the (from what I've read) slow selling RX1 range.

Been meaning to buy one of the eyecups for my cameras. Anyone recommend one ?

I've only tried the 100L on the MC-11 once but my first impression is that it did not focus well, it hunts like crazy.

In good light it wasn't to bad but i found with all the Canon glass i tried it wasn't very consistent in all honesty or at least not to the point i would use it for crucial work.

Going to hire the 70-200 f2.8 and probably the 85 f1.4 for my final meeting this year.

Didn't really get the A7III for work but more family stuff instead of lugging round a 1DXMKII but i am very impressed with the files so i may have to have a shuffle around.

Likely the first. It’s definitely the first in the Middle East region, with deliveries not likely to start for another 2 weeks here.

Not a genuine eye cup. I couldn’t actually find anything genuine, so bought a few off Amazon.

They seem to have gone up a bit in price but very much worth the tenner.

I just bought another A7III.

Debated long and hard on an A9 but maybe next time.

Your 2nd?

Mine is coming today...can't afford a set of flashes yet though so I think the next wedding I am going to have to do something I don't think anyone has ever done before....Daylight Sony, evening Canon....2 totally separate system.

I don't think an A9 would be beneficial for me, I find 8FPS is s bit too much already, silent shooting I can already do with the A73. I've also notice there is no anti-flickering on the A9 either for some reason.

Yes my second, I tried the silent shooting the other day at a wedding as another photographer had told me that I shouldn't get any banding if I used a shutter speed of at least 1/125 but I did so the A9 appealed and I might get one later on. The lighting conditions where quite difficult though so will try the silent shooting out again. My wife still shoots Nikon and won't change so we are using both. Thankfully there doesn't really seem to much difference between the files colours seem very similar.

In regards to flashes I ordered the Godox Xpro-s trigger for my AD200'S & AD600 and I bought a little Godox V350s which surprisingly worked quite well. There is a cheaper version that takes AA batteries as well. The one I have works great apart from the battery sticking inside the flash and being difficult to get out, to be fair I knew they did this before I bought it.

Probably worth mentioning the hot shoe on those small Godox flashes can very easily snap off, I was talking to a guy the other day and he actually carries spare hot shoes so he can swap them out while out working.

I am on the A9 group on Facebook and someone posted that you can still get banding with the A9, it is not foolproof yet.

Re the X-Pro, I would need a flash on the camera as fill, on top of 2 off camera as kickers. I know the X-Pro now does IR but not sure about any of the flash heads yet?

Very rarely u will see banding. In fact the examples shows that even mechanical shutter shows banding on areas where the A9 does such as those philips hue wifi lights (I tested it before and saw banding on my 5d4!)

I have Hue at home, not a problem in mechanical....if I can get away with it these days, it's my default way to shoot just to make sure I don't get banding, sometimes it's hard to notice there is LED around, especially in the day time with all these windows but you forget there are some spot lights in the corners of the room.
