The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Thanks Dave funny enough I was thinking along the same lines as you I was all set to wait a couple of years and get a GFX but then I got thinking about the price, what I wanted was at least the 23mm, 32-65 and the 110 or 200mm ( might have the exact focal lengths wrong but hopefully I'm close enough) and I was looking at north of 7 or 8 grand plus would have liked to keep the 100-400 plus a x body.
I like the Sony find it handles pretty well not as good as X-H1 but still pretty good, just about got it customised as I want it so don't really have to touch the menus now and to be honest don't think there are as bad as people say, different to be sure but did think that about the Fuji when I first got one.
Did miss the mp when I switched from Nikon to Fuji, as most people don't think I really need 95% of the time but i do find it very nice to have, goes without saying the iq is stellar and really like the dr.
Pet hate is the colour of the af point I am forever struggling to see where it is.
Overall happy with the switch, miss the Fuji film sims but generally like the colours the Sony gives.
Mind you when I win the lottery I'm off to buy a gfx and all the lenses. :)

Funnily enough its not the cost of change/upgrade to either of these systems that's making me hesitant but the weight, I originally got into the Fuji system (X100) and loved the reduction in bag weight, and sometimes I wish I could be more sensible and just carry the X100F + WCL again!!

But I'm definitely craving more MP, and an increased Dynamic Range, and I think I have to accept that this comes with a weight penalty. Quality Modern FF Glass is also getting a bit lardy.

If only I could simplify........

So I was waiting for the £1629 A7 III to come back instock at E Infinity and this morning it did, they raised it £1649 though. I know it's only £20 but it made me pause for thought and then it went out of stock again dammit! I think the A7 III is selling even stronger since the Nikon/Canon releases that people were waiting for before choosing.

You could go for the Sony A7R III and the new FE 24mm f1.4 GM, that's not a big package at all, or maybe the 16-35mm f2.8 GM? The Sony FE 35mm f2.8 and 55mm f1.8 are small too :D

They are selling very strong, my local camera store told me they are flying off the pallets :D lol

Never used them before - are they as reliable/decent as Panamoz?

Me neither but heard they're pretty good, generally the cheapest but only 1 year warranty vs Panamoz 3 years.

Another one of my friends has swapped to Sony - got his from Panamoz with the kit lens - they knocked £20 off the price so its always worth seeing how much they will price match!

Yeah been in touch with Panamoz, they said they'll see what they can do when they have stock. Both out of stock of the Body Only right now, and I don't really want the kit lens

You can get kit lens for £1850 and MPB pay £150 for the lens - means you get an A7iii with 3 year warranty which is done in UK - worth considering :)

Some stunning images, very impressive. After been away from Sony for a while and playing around with Fuji, missed the extra detail and low light performance of the A7R II, so rebuilding back into the A7 system. Purchased a used 24-70 2.8 G master, just need to buy a new camera to use it on :D

Was looking at panamoz and see the difference on there between the III and r III is £300, a lot less then the UK difference between the models. Its temping going for the R but I know I won't shoot anything at the increased resolution very often!

Can anyone recommend a good wide angle, I recall using the Sony 16-35 F4 a lot which was good, but been away from Sony for a while so keen to know if theres anything else you guys would recommended?

There's also a 2.8 now if you need it.

Dont we all, funny enough it was the weight of the X-H1 that got me thinking about the switch. For the lenses I wanted there is not a lot in it.

My got to kit on Fuji was
Fuji X-H1 - 673g. (if you shoot the X-T2 its 507g)
Fuji 16-55 f2.8 - 655g
Fuji 10-24 - 410g
And either the 55-200 - 580g or if there was a chance of wildlife and I was walking for miles the 100-400 - 1,375g

So roughly 2138g with the 55-200 or 3133g with the 100-400.

Now its

Sony A7R3 - 657g
Sony 24-105 f4 - 663g
Zeiss Loxia 21mm f2.8 - 394g
Either a Olympus 200m f4 prime - 625g with adaptor or the 100-400 - 1,395 g

So roughly 2235 g with the 200mm or 3,009 with the 100-400.
Its not a totally fair comparison because with the Sony Ive only go down to 21mm and on the lightweight telephoto only to 200mm, but for me the 21mm and the 24-105 covers approx 95% of my shots.

I do have the Loawa 15mm f2 which I sometimes take instead of the 21mm which does add another 100g.

Obviously with the Fuji you can go a lot lighter with a X-T20, 18-55 and the 14mm f2.8.

I do miss the handling of the Fuji especially the X-H1 but I do like the extra MP and the increase in DR, the time I really apprecaite the FF is the pre dawn or post sunrise shots.

Must admit when I looked at the weights of the stuff I wanted I was surprised.
But then if you want the really fast primes the its a different story.

Graham, thanks for the above post, my Fuji kit is a little lighter than yours, you had a heavy body and main zoom lens (that's relatively heavy), and I tend to shoot more with primes, and I love the 35mm FF focal length. I'm leaning towards the GFX at the moment (the new 50R), as there is a vast array of MF manual lenses available, and many FF lenses (Zeiss especially) have a large enough image circle to cover the GFX sensor, as its not hugely bigger than FF, its an itch that I feel needs scratching........

I've resorted to 9 bracket shooting for sunrise/sunset with the X-T2 and picking a selection of the 9 to merge, I can certainly appreciate the benefits of more DR.

A pleasure David I can totally understand your thinking especially if you shoot mainly with primes. I do like the A7RIII but im not saying never to a GFX in a few years time especially when I use the 100-400 less. :)

New Sony firmware update for A7/RIII.

One thing caught my attention - "When used with the LA-EA3 mount adaptor, all focus areas are supported.
Note : Focus Area options added : Zone, Expand Flexible Spot, and Lock-on AF.

Does that mean all options will also be supported when using a canon EF adapter? Adds almost all native like AF options.

Anyway will give it a try this evening...

Sony issued a new major firmware update for the Sony A7III (download here) and Sony A7rIII (download here).

A7III an A7rIII: Benefits and Improvements from the latest update
Support of “SEL400F28GM”and “SEL24F14GM”

  • Optimization of the optical image stabilization performance, and addition of a new image stabilization mode of the lens (Mode 3)(Only “SEL400F28GM”).
  • Addition of a Function Ring(Lens) to the menu.
Note: For the SEL400F28GM lens, the APS-C S35/Full Frame Sel. setting is assignable to the Function Ring in addition to Power Focus.
  • Addition of [Aperture Drive in AF] setting in the menu.
*Using the lens “SEL400F28GM” or “SEL24F14GM”, when [Silent priority] is selected, the sound emitted by the aperture drive will be reduced. This is useful in shooting conditions where camera.
noise should be kept to a minimum. Note that Auto Focus may become slower when [Silent priority] is selected.
New features:

  • [AF Track Sens] can be assigned to a custom key.
  • When used with the LA-EA3 mount adaptor [link to product page], all focus areas are supported.
Note : Focus Area options added : Zone, Expand Flexible Spot, and Lock-on AF.
Bracket shooting is available during silent shooting when [File Format] is set to [RAW] or [RAW & JPEG] and [RAW File Type] is set to [Uncompressed].
Other improvements:

  • Improvement of the performance and the overall stability of the camera.
  • Better reproduction of the gradation of RAW pictures.
Note: Imaging Edge software needs to be updated to benefit from the improvement in the RAW processing.
  • When shooting with a flash in an environment with flickering light sources, the stability of the exposure is improved.
  • Improvement of managing continuously shot images as a group.
Please refer to the HelpGuide for updated function usage.

Well, just for a bit of balance one could say that Fuji have at times brought (arguably) poorly developed kit to market too soon with sub par focus and buggy feature missing firmware and that they've had a few reliability issues too.

I'm not being a Sony fan boy here, I'm just pointing out that all is not sweetness and light in either Sony or Fuji land.

damm you beat me to it. i was going to post this too

I did a little project for myself of shots through windows, oh er, but not in a sneaky way as they're all from inside looking out.

With the new high end APS-C possibly on the way and the continued popularity of the A6xxx series I was thinking I should change the thread name to...

The Amazing Sony FF and APS-C / Anything Else Welcome Mega Thread!

Unless there are any objections.
