"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Just the standard one Keith.

Simon.

Cheers, looking about for a nice copy for nice money :D someone is selling the 200 2.8 locally but from the bit I've read the F4 is actually the better value, as the 2.8 [200mm] needs stopping down anyway

Well, after a lot of thought and weighing up a variety of different options, all of my m4/3 gear went in part exchange today against a single lens and camera. I now have an EOS R and a 24-70mm L lens. The camera body itself isn’t too different than the G9, and the grip is almost identical which is a very, very good thing. My lens doesn’t arrive until Tuesday, so until then I have a very expensive paperweight :ROFLMAO:

Enjoy, hope it works out well for you. You've done some real nice work with your M43 gear, your images will be missed here.

No spare money at all. Could only do it by selling every bit of m4/3 gear I’d amassed over the years. I now have one lens and one camera.

Poor excuse no lens, a photographer of your ability should not let that stop him ;)

Took a walk to the local park today, as it was a pretty nice day considering the lashings we got mid week. I was hoping to see lots of Autumn colours, but .. not so much, a lot of the trees are still green and the park isn't all that interesting tbh, but it was a good excuse for a walk, and got a few shots in at least. I have a better spot I need to get back to before Autumn is through, should be more colour there

Nice Keith

You keeping the g80 then Keith

It doesn't seem to be selling so looks like it for the time being. There's a bunch watching it on a local sale site but nobody is making a move. I don't really mind, because the switch to Fuji would come with some cons [no IBIS, no touch screen, less of a grip] I like both systems, just can't afford to have both at once, would if I could. If the G80 sold I was going to jump on the XT2 offers that were available, but most of those seem to be over for now [10 - 20% off mint used bodies on some sites] - the XT2 was a camera I really wanted when I had the XT1, but it was much more expensive at the time. I switched to M43 for the IBIS and just to try it out really. I'll be in a position to buy a nice lens very soon, and looking at the 12-40 2.8, still can't shift the 15mm 1.7 though, could trade it in, which is what I will probably end up doing, at a loss - either the 60mm macro or another 100-300

Mine has just arrived a little late for the Audi Drivers event at the weekend but It's beautifully made and looking forward to using it.

Thanks guys. Amazingly enough, size, weight and ergonomics so far feel identical to the G9.

That's exactly what i thought when chatting with a pro photographer at Audi Drivers International Castle Coombe this Saturday. As well as his full frame Cannon and a suitably heavy long piece of glass for track photos he also had on his other shoulder the EOS R. It looked so like the G9 that i asked if i could look at it. Turned out to be the new Canon mirrorless you've just bought. Looked a lovely bit of kit and felt nice in the hand. You may recall we had a severe storm Saturday and Castle Coombe had a few heavy showers that morning. I caught up with him a couple hours later and he showed me a fogged up view finder on the new canon saying "it's not so watertight after all" Perhaps he had a one of although he did shelter from the worst of the showers but i thought i'd mention it to you.

Thanks for that Mark. I never trust the weather proofing claims made by manufacturers. I never have done, even when I used to use Canon 1 series bodies back in the day. I'll always shoot using a rain cover if I'm out in the rain. Appreciate the heads up though.

Simon.

I'm the same as you, our photography kit is far too precious and expensive for us amateurs to take a chance.

I have a question i'd like to ask as a novice in digital. Question is, what would be the best card reader i should buy that is able to do full justice with my newly acquired GX8 and potentially a G9 later on without paying for performance those cameras will never use?

Currently using a Sandisc Extreme HD Video 30mb/sec 8 gig card. I find it infuriating but It was what currys sold me a few years ago and recommended for the GX1, it used to hit the buffer terribly. Your thoughts appreciated thanks Mark.

Card reader or card?

If its the latter Sandisk like this seems to work well for me https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Extreme-SDHC-Memory-Class/dp/B01J5RHBQ4
Card reader that gets recommended often is the Lexar usb 3 version, just plug my card straight in the pc like most others do these days

Thanks. I think it's just the card that slots next to the battery in the camera and looks like the ones in the Amazon link.
So anyone of those cards will do? Do you know the difference between the HC on the 32gb or the XC on the 64gb cards?
I know it's a silly question but i'm new to this malarkey.

It's just how they name them as the size increases, SD was up to 4gb then over that they became SDHC and now over 32gb is SDXC
Usual wisdom is don't put all your chickens in one basket, so two 16gb is better than a 32gb and so on.
If one fails you haven't lost everything especially important such as travel when you may never visit again
Also ensure you back up your photos and one more thing format your cards in camera, not on other devices

Very informative, and thanks for tasking the trouble to explain it all. One more thing how do you format cards in the camera and is this vital?

On the Panasonic G80 you'll find it under the second wrench icon in the menu, and page 6 of 6, it'll probably be the same for the GX8, and yes, always format in camera - after you have loaded the files over to the PC

My pleasure Mark, not sure about the whys and wherefors of formatting, but think it probably builds some directories in that the camera sees when it writes to the card.
The information that Keith gave is also correct on my GX9, self explanatory from there. Also use format to delete photos rather than when the card is connected to the pc.

Good set Ian . Really can’t fault any of my MFT gear it just works

Bought the G80 + 12-60mm last month just before the cashback ended and have subsequently bought the 100-300mm lens, currently with cashback. Still on the learning curve but I'm happy so far:

Very nice images :) The G80 is very easy to get along with, I have never once been confused or encountered a problem that didn't take less than a minute to figure out, and if so, youtube is great for tips on settings etc ...
