Mount cutter, what do you all recommend?

I'm after a mount cutter.

Having bought really cheap one from The Range and regretting it I'm after a Logan.

I've seen a 40" one (just the metal rule) with bevel and straight cutters for £89.

Would I be better going for an A350 I think it's called?

I'll only be mounting up to A2 maximum for now.

Thanks in advance,

Terry.

I have both types (mine is the 301) and not surprisingly find the dearer model easier to use.
Having something to stop the mount board moving is very handy, also has the better cutter with upright grip.

Got the better one in a closing down sale, not sure I would pay over double, maybe would if I used it more often than my hardly ever

Thanks Mr Taxi. I’m thinking obviously the more expensive the better it’s going to be.

The one you are looking at also has the top rail so the board is held secure in both axis.

I saw a make called Longridge at a photo show and if I intended using it fairly often would probably buy that one.
Hard to explain, but it had stops you set to rest the board against, could leave it and cut the same size time and again

I've got the 2000. Had it for a good few years now. I use it with a builders ruler (with a handle) to get pressure on the mat. Always put scrap mountboard underneath (and on top of the cutting mat) to get a nice smooth cut.

I'm looking to make my own mounts and baffled by the range of mount boards available.
Can anyone recommend some boards (10 perhaps) and a cutter. I plan to have single apertures only.

At the moment this will be used in my own home. But I would like to be able to present framed images as gifts at a later date (once I get used to creating a proper mount).

TIA

Found these very good for mount board https://www.paperspectrum.co.uk/mounting-products-20-c.asp
This looks like a good deal for a cutter, add a cutting mat and away you go https://www.craftyarts.co.uk/team-system-mat-mount-cutter-24-free-knife-p1938

I taught myself to mount my own prints when I began entering camera club competitions. I had to buy a load of scrap offcuts and spent a weekend cutting them up! It was a steep learning curve.. .at that time I was using a Jakar Mount Cutter and a long metal ruler. I saw the Longridge Duo Mount Cutter at The Photo Show, but decided it was too expensive. Luckily I found one on Ebay about 2 weeks later, its probably the best thing I have bought after my lenses. Makes very light work of the job, but I don’t use all the bits in the box . I still use the long metal ruler to help find the centre of the mount board. Good luck!

I use a Logan Compact Elite and it’s excellent. Tried the cheapo ruler and guide and hardly ever got what I considered a satisfactory mount.

I tend to cut mounts of the same size so I only need to mark the first mount and then set the stops for the first pair of cuts. Then reset the top stop for the second pair. Spot on every time.

£144 on Amazon at the moment.

One thing to point out is that the max border width varies with the model. The compact elite has a max border of 11.4 cms.

I bought a Logan Artist Elite 450-1. It wasn't cheap but will see me out. I heard a saying once, "buy cheap buy twice" whatever I'm delighted with mine. The only problem is their matt cutting calculator app is very suspect with metric measurements IIRC

Have a look here https://cotswoldmounts.co.uk/ for mount board and lots of info on cutting, etc. They are really helpful and delivery is very quick. I also use a logan cutter, brilliant piece of kit.

I have one of those too, never use it though and just tend to stick with the Logan team straight edge and cutter.
Like most things if it's not out ready to use quite often doesn't see the light of day
Can't be doing digging it out of a cupboard and getting it all out of the box for one or two mounts every few months.

Like that

I've heard some lazy excuses over time, but you really take the biscuit

Problem living in a Victoria cottage, not much room and everything has to be put away.
So much easier just grabbing the ruler and cutter from the drawer, might as well flog the other gizmo.
Mustn't complain though, one bit of valuable space is taken up with a rather large Canon A3+ printer

If you are interested in selling, then please let me know as per rules of forum, etc....)

I plan to do a few (15) mounts then doubt I will use it much more, as space is an issue.....

I'm similar. I've ended up buying certain size mounts and I only cut them if they are unusual sizes. I find if i don't do it often, i do get a bit out of practice.

Will probably keep it, by the time postage is paid on a large item it's not worth bothering.
Never know might get mount cutting mania and knock them out like mad although I doubt it.
