Hi all,

It's cold and the weather is a bit miserable so I thought I'd post some images from a holiday last summer. Two of these got in explore on Flickr, which doesn't mean much but I was pleased with it!

1. Traveled 40 minutes each way for this one on Formentor Island, it was a lovely sunrise.

2. Blue hour on Formentor, managed to catch the very last of the sunset with this long exposure. Used a 16mm fisheye for this, not one I'd used for landscapes before.

3. Another sunrise, this time at the pier in Alcudia

4. Sunset on Formentor, taken from a popular viewing spot.

5. Another sunset composition from Formentor Island.

6. I was looking for a sunset composition and just happened to spot this view looking back over the mountain ranges, thought it'd suit being a mono.

7. I took this just after the lighthouse image above, as the sun had started to rise.

8. Some excellent roads to drive on near Sa Colabra.

What do you think?

Thanks for looking :)

What a great series and great to see something non UK ;)

1. On the whole awesome - might try reign in the highlights in ever so slightly on the sky
2. As good as it can be but I might clone or crop out the moon. It's a distraction.
3. As per one.
4. A simply jaw dropping shot of utter perfection.
5. As per one.
6. I think this is good, but maybe a little more whites - it's just a little grey.
7. Perfect technically - actually maybe increase the yellow luminosity more - make the light dance a bit. What this really needs is a well placed open top sports car in the front. I could see myself driving that and really enjoying the drive.
8. Nice shot, but needs a car and the light of 7.

A lovely set there Tom with 1,2,3,4 and the Mono being my favs.

You would need to fly there Steve and I cant see you swimming there either so no chance of you sitting in a car on a Spanish Island :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::)

You can get a Ferry from Cadiz to Tenerife. It's expensive but when my numbers come up I will buy two houses, one in the Andorra for tax efficiency and that gives me access to the Pyrenees and one in Tenerife where I would winter from November to Mid May - this would mean I would dodge winter. If I ever become very rich I would not want to experience temperatures that fall into single digits. Not being cold is the biggest luxury in life.

From a photography point of view the Azores and Canaries are very interesting. Think Iceland geology without the ice. Sadly the Azores are out as regrettable you cannot sail there with a car there are some great landscapes to be had there (most area's that have had lots of tectonic activity). Tenerife, Lanzarote would be mega for a landscaper and you'd dodge the hoards off to Iceland and the Dolomites.

Thanks for the comments, I will take a look :)

No. 7 - agree but I only had a Nissan Pulsar to hand

Thank you Graham!

Great to see these posted Tom after our brief exchange of messages before your trip.

Really like the first, did you shoot a shorter exposure that retains detail in the sky as well? If so it would be an easy blend to get the detail/colour back and keep the light trails.

The fourth is excellent and I wouldn't change a thing. I like 7 a lot too, maybe I would have composed with a bit more of the road visible in the foreground. Tells a better story then visually I think.

When you went to Sa Calobra did you walk down to the hidden valley/river to the sea at the end of the road?

Yes, thanks for that!

Nope didn’t do a shorter one. I wanted the LE on the sky as well.

RE 7 - possibly yes, to be honest this shot was taken hand held on the way back to the car so I should have probably thought about it more!

Didn’t go right down unfortunately, we didn’t have time :( I want to go back there at sunrise for some light trails anyway!

All great photos but number 2 is my fave by fair, simply stunning

Thank you (y)

I bet its all there in the RAW file, just the SadRGB (sRGB) conversion for the web stole the highlights. You have to intentionally "cripple" your lovely images to fit this antiquated web standard. We should be all using AdobeRGB or P3 by now. Just a little more highlight recovery on the sky portion and hopefully all is good.

I work in adobe 1998 and the pictures just look so much worse on here. It’s in the subtleties really though and low res doesn’t help

You have to create 2 (or more versions) - one for web and the other like you say aRGB or perhaps whatever papers profile you are going to print on. SRGB is a horrible horrible colour space and I've been saying this years ago

I tend to export a 1024 longest edge for web/blog use in sRGB (I think Mozilla is the only browser that displays aRGB).

Decent screens matter so much, as well as how it's set up and the environment you edit in. That's the one plus with winter. Dark afternoons so you can edit in the darkness with the screen set right.

You have to proof it for sRGB too. Just exporting chops off the extreme colours and then it may look crap. Its a real pain because it is very narrow space.

not entirely true. You can force chrome to behave better as well, just not by default. Tell Googlag to sort it out instead of their snowflake and censorship crap. Safari I think does the trick too.

As long as the master aRGB TIFF looks good that's what matters. For the great unwashed they look good enough to pass muster ;)

except when they inevitably lose interest and confidence to buy them. Peter Lik for example has really poor web gallery display I'm sure for that exact reason. But I've seen it in person and they are great.

For example here is the old straight export
Poppies

note the flowers are basically all uniform 255,0,0

and sRGB proofed version after some further tweaks

Again paying attention to the flowers they have far more detail and look just as colourful. Of course I have a far stronger version for printing on quality glossy papers or for the future internet.
