Which editing software for GoPro footage.

I'm sure this has been asked 100s of times before, but hey questions keep the forum busy don't they?

I'm very much a stills man only using an old GoPro for incar really footage a few times a year. With that I use Windows movie maker to cut to length and make it ready for you tube.

With a big Florida holiday coming up, a few other bits and bobs and the need to have remote control in the rally car I have bought a hero 7 black.

With the Florida holiday is like to try to make a decent stab at a video / videos to keep for the future. It's likely to incorporate plenty of normal and fast speed footage and have some music laid over it too.

The question is what software do I need? Ideally it will be free, bit at the same time I know what I'm like and the likelihood is I'll end up upgrading quickly. I don't really want to spend more than about a fiver a month, maybe slightly more because I might only use it a few times then forget about it for ages. I currently have Adobe for lightroom on the monthly package for my stills work.

Recommendations please?

I use the gopro studio or filmora (which I prefere) Dont think theres much in it quality wise but filmora seems to have better colour/light editing options. Both are fairly quick and simple

GoPro studio would be a good choice, no longer on their website it has become Quik I haven't tried.

It's basic but more than adequate to edit out unwanted sections and tweak colours a bit.

You might consider the free version of DaVinci resolve, daunting at first but loads of help online.
There are youtube tutorials would get you going in 15 minutes.

I have adobe premier 14 , there is a free trial download on their site I believe.

If your going to Florida have you heard that Disney world in Florida has had to close? true. The health inspectors did a spot check last week and they found 2 x 6ft mice in one of the food halls. They trying to escape through the kitchen door

Has anyone found the 4K and 2.7K gopro footage jerky and unwatchable? I shot some video in 4k on my Hero 6 and its almost unplayable. Skips from frame to frame.

Not quite sure why as my laptop is pretty new with loads of Ram and a high res display. Also is the same on my Samsung tablet.

Playback seems ok at 1080p.

Am I missing something as part of the video download process?

I use GoPro Studio and it is very useful.

That's usually caused by the laptop not using hardware decoding. That could simply be a software configuration issue or a case that the gpu lacks the necessary ability to decode the footage. Without gpu hardware acceleration, it falls back to the cpu which will have a hard time managing it at the necessary frame rate in order to maintain smooth playback.

There are some pitfalls, skipping frames can be a result of (e.g.) recording in different fps to your edited videos.
Also running all auto can result in crazy fast shutter speeds giving a staccato effect when ideally you want a bit of motion blur from a shutter at about 1/50th - but don't get too hung up on this.

However as previous post suggested it's often older computers barely cope with high bitrate video coming from these higher spec cameras even at 1080p
You might resolve it by ensuring codecs are up to date and perhaps downloading a different video player.
VLC is usually a good one but try others, windows media player sometimes does well perhaps because it's regularly updated behind scenes.
