The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Sony could really shake up the market with the next Sony A9 II, they need to provide something unique that will get the professional Olympic crowd moving over.
Integrated 4/5G data functionality perhaps to allow direct uploading to the press? :)

just add a nespresso machine and sorted.

I believe medium format has a look tied to it's ability to capture more to render better tonality and (sensor or lenses?) out of focus fall-off, adding more MP to a 35mm sensor will not achieve the same.

But some people are solely focused on MP and are missing the point of MF

I can see your point about the look as this is why I've end up with multiple copies of lenses of the same focal length, they all give a slightly different look.

I can of course appreciate how people like us, mostly happy amateurs, enthusiastic pros and the odd more pragmatic pro, enthuse about the look, DR, cropability and all the rest but for people who are able to take a small step back from that and focus more on what the picture will look like at final output size to themselves or even to the paying customer staying a step or so below the absolute pinnacle of image quality and/or look could make sense when we consider factors such as cost, diminishing returns and the practicalities that sometimes come into play, for example maybe the smaller format kit is more portable or more responsive with fast focusing, eye AF or some other feature and just wins the quality v other stuff equation compared to MF. Anyway, a little comparison is fun to read and Steve Huff will have more on the A7RIV soon...

What's up with the recent pricing from Sony as well....

A7R4 is $3500 and £3500 (1:1 ratio) but the 35mm f1.8 is $750 yet only £629.

In the states items made in China have higher tax. The camera body is made in Japan. Hence the difference.

I don’t know if this is true or not just read it on the rumour site when the lens launched.

The Trump tax it is called apparently.

When is too many MP too much? 61? 86? 100? Do lenses need updating to handle the higher resolution?

Sure I can take a photo with a 35mm and crop the he’ll out of it to make it look like I took it with a 400mm focal length but what else? Print billboards and posters that cover buildings?

What are the other benefits of such high MP? Right now I’ve got more negatives (file size, slower workflow, more storage etc) than I have positives for my own usage and I’m trying to talk myself out of getting it.

There are only 2 instances really where you want these high MP.

1 - If you Print large, I mean actually print. If all you ever do is posting online, don't bother. Even if you are taking landscapes, if you never print anything, it is a waste.

2 - You crop a lot and HEAVY. My advice is stop it, get a zoom, Telephoto or tele converter or walk closer.

Personally I don't need one, the only prints that I make are wedding albums and they don't need 42mp, nevermind 61mp. Even a 24mp photo can print A1 perfectly fine.

Cropping is a major advantage for things like wildlife where you can never have enough reach! Also useful for macro photography to get greater magnification by cropping.

To some extent I don't buy as many lenses either since I use some of them in crop mode. For example my 85GM is also my 130mm f2. The current 18mp isn't bad but 26mp is better :D

The modern lenses will probably hold good for a while till we reach 100mp and above. A lot of lens manufacturers have hinted this in various interviews.

Storage is cheap. My iMac easily handles 100mp files. It slows down a little around 140-150mp. So 61mp is no problem :)

Getting closer to wildlife optically and physically can be harder than you think. There is a reason why people use APS-C bodies like 7D2 or D500 for wildlife. Having the digital reach greatly helps :)
Everything that gets you closer to your subject is a help.

It's not based on the dollar price so you will see differences between them.

Or blend into the environment and the animals will come to you :p

Personally, I will never use crop mode. I think my 5Ds R have crop mode but never use them as they exhibit similar IQ pre and post.

Also, while we're discussing pricing. The A7R3 dropped by £300 only a month or two after launch which always seemed quick to me. I wonder if the A7R4 will follow suit by the autumn?

It won't even launch until autumn and demand is going to be high, I wouldn't assume any discounts this year.

What other 35mm do you have at the moment? Looking forward to any comparisons.

Sigma 35 1.4 E mount

I actually rang them again to make sure it was really in stock. Just seems abit quick or something. Said I'll have it tomorrow, buzzing to check it out

$3,500 excluding tax, if you add tax say 10% (depending on which State you buy) it would become $3,850.00 factoring the currency plus import duty plus VAT 20%. Excluding the shipping and insurance $3,850.00 becoming £3,905.21p

It would work out cheaper if you are in the States, bought it, throw away the boxes, you'll end up with about £3,070.00 but of course Sony UK may not recognise this if you are in Sony Pro member. The latter requires verification.

£3499 from Wex.

It will drop in price in time.

What's interesting is you can get an A7R2 for £1599 - which to me seems a pretty good deal.

I'd be tempted to get 2x A7R2's and leave attached my most used lens on one and second most used on the other. Also gives some inbuilt redundancy to my system. 42mp is not to be sniffed at either :D

I'd be inclined to get an A7R3 for a little more, just for the same battery as the current gen bodies to keep things simple.

There's quite a bit more on Wex - £700. I do like the A73 though - I had a try of one from a workshop client - it was nice but the sensor is the same as the A7R2- and that's hardly old hat - buy a few battery packs and happy shooting.

Get used is what I would do, I suspect there may be a few upgrading to it.

Yeah, if you don’t need the AF or improved features like handling/battery/evf then the a7rii is a great choice and very cheap, especially used.

or that :D

Off topic there are two almost new D810's in the classifieds for a song. Electronics depreciate, rapidly.

The Siggy Art 35mm f/1.4 for Nikon was only £300 odd quid on Amazon earlier and Currys have it for under £330.

They where £600 yesterday.

Camera equipment isn't an investment when you buy something these days with so many fast paced changes it is basically dead money.

I am offloading my Canon stuff before I lose everything....

You have left it too late.

It's worth more than zero, so it's fine.

Yes the Sony version came out ages ago. It was the first lens I bought when I jumped ship from Nikon.

Has been superseded by the f/1.2 version now.

I'll have my 1.2 tomorrow man. Hopefully

Awesome, look forward to hearing your thoughts. I didn't expect you to get it so soon tbh.

I just spoke to them again as a mate wanted to buy one and was seeing how many they got. They only got 2 in!

Nice one, hope you have made an appointment at the healthcentre for Friday to have the doc dish out some pain killers for your back. :ROFLMAO:

Wee jokes, look forward to seeing some images from it.

Thanks, he was sulking away from the others in the group at the top of a telegraph pole. Quite pleased with them myself.
