The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

It’d be fine for me. As it is for thousands of people :).
So is the iPhone why not just stick with that then ;)

For me it's about getting what I pay for and with this lens I don't consider that to be the case. Same goes for the Sony Zeiss 24mm F1.8.

Ahaha it’s not that bad surely! People say the 24-70 f4 isn’t great but I’d probably give it a go.

The 24-70mm at current prices with many discounts is actually fine by me.

Still not built like the A7 series, and the A6400 has juicier tricks :D - Honestly, if Sony's APSC line was more attractive I could easily slip into it. I don't get this teensy, terrible ergonomic APSC approach. I guess they prefer people to shoot for their FF bodies, and even they are a bit meh ... but at least they have some grip and size [not a fan of tiny cams me] - I'm not sure if the A6400 is any better than the X-H1 I have in terms of performance - I know AF will be better and video features [not interested] but I do know the Fuji trounces it for build quality and ergos, also it has IBIS.

Yeah, that point doesn’t really apply when you have all the gear under the sun. If anything, why on earth would you use an x-t1 when you have everything else at your disposal.

I have a7IIIs and an a6400 but away from work I'll pretty much always take an a6300 and small prime out with me on family days etc. Still way, way more capable than anything I had 10 years ago.

In fact, I shot half of the last wedding on one of the a6300s and its probably my favourite/best wedding of the lot.

Me, Mrs WW, my A7 and 35mm f2.8 in my Billingham bag had a lovely holiday in Singapore.

Street food... I just love the hawker markets....

We got there just as they were ramping up to wishing the place a Happy Birthday. We wandered down and watched the practice fireworks with the rest of the revellers and happy snappers...

It was really hot and humid but maybe not so much as Thailand. The camera never really missed a beat despite being used up a very humid hill and an also hot and humid walkway over a swamp. Misting up and moisture never seemed to be an issue. The only issue I had was the face detect not liking Mrs WW (see PS below) and wide area focusing being pants for flower shots when viewing at high mag on screen. I was in a rush and when I saw the results I stopped using it for flower shots and the like.

PS.
Peeps may remember talk about Sony being racist because their eye/face detect seems to prefer lighter skin tones. My A7 only has face detect and even when setting Mrs WW as the preferred face the camera preferred people with a lighter skin. Shame on you Sony!

PPS.
I do really know it's not reeeeaaaally racism.

Welcome back, you missed nothing here :angelic:

Will we ever see a selfie to go with all your Mrs W images? :) - sounds like you had a good time ... Jaysis, I need a trip away soooon ...

Singapore was wonderful and I'd never been, the Mrs has been lots of times though, I was shocked that stuff in the shops was soooo expensive though, just more expensive to up to 5 times more expensive than here. We bought less than a dozen items on the first day to cook indoors, peas, corn, flour and bits and pieces like that and that half a basket cost the same as a weeks shop trolley full from ASDA here. Transport and hawker and some restaurant food was good value though.

I skimmed the pages I missed here and it looked like the usual (good) business as usual with some really nice pictures.

Dunno about a selfie, I might one day but usually I'm behind the camera pointing it at someone or summot.

Dunno when I'll get another holiday. Unlikely I'll get one next year. Got back today and it's straight back into it (caring) despite being up for something approaching 48 hours now. So it's bed time!

To be honest I don't shoot landscapes, but when I was looking into the 70-300 for motorsports it seemed a lot liked it over the 70-200 f4 for landscapes.

I'd like to say I'd never buy a 70-200 f4, been there done that with Canon, but the smaller size is nice (I might just stick with Fuji though if I decide to go with smaller kit). The problem I have with the Sony 70-200 f2.8 is the price/performance and needing to get a good copy. I'm still using an adapted Canon at the moment whilst waiting to see if Tamron/Sigma bring anything out. If they don't I might just get the 100-400 and get a 135mm prime. Although the 200-600 release has clouded the water a bit. Main uses would be motorsport and airshows, but also some field sports. I'm thinking the 100-400 would be the better all rounder and it takes a TC well?

Last year it was a toss up between the 70-200 f4 and 70-300. In the end I only went with the 70-200 as the plan would be to try finding a 100-400. The 100-400 fits me better as I mainly shoot wildlife with a bit of landscapes thrown in. I am thinking I don’t really need them both as other than size the 100-400 can do everything I need. The 200-600 is an interesting proposition but it’s the size and weight that puts me off.

This thread is as much about willy waving as it is about actual photography. That's the main reason I refrain from posting here these days - bettering your images through gear isn't what photography is about, for me, sorry.

You’re right kit doesn’t matter that much compared other ways to improve images. The only way kit helps if it helps you get out more. I wasn’t enjoying carrying big heavy telephoto around. I’m happier with less kit and only what I need to get wildlife/landscape photos I’m trying to get.

Hopefully I will get out in the heather next week, fingers crossed for some good light. The summer is always a slow time for me. It’s as if I go into a photography hibernation! I’ve been going through last autumns images and editing some I missed. It’s soon autumn again so much more chance of interesting conditions and getting out more.

Yeah but we all know your absolutely minted, wipe your arse with £50 notes etc. [emoji38]

Not me, if I didn’t need gear for work there is no way I would have the best part of 20k tied up in camera equipment so i could take a few photos of the kids when we are out for the day.
Well that's the problem. Many people here take loads of pics of different subjects. Not just there kids running around. Some even go to events and new cities and countries just to take pics!

But Sony is Japanese...!

This almost harks back to grey scale algorithms, colour cards developed to expose for white skin and development of film in the 70s - cameras were built, at the time, to expose correctly for white skin - us poor brown and black skinned buggers were left with dodgy looking skin tones as a result. Times have changed now - I haven’t detected any issues with shooting mixed races in one scene (my family are brown skinned, my wife is milk bottle white and my son is somewhere in the middle [emoji23])

All optics are interesting to me, and all but a handful are a compromise in so many ways. You've seen my small collection of mostly manual Sony lenses. I also have 7 reasonably good binoculars, but still struggle to identify birds with whatever I choose to carry.

This little known site for me puts some things into perspective:
https://binocular.ch/
A true collecter, has got both Nikon WX bins, Kowa 32x82 ! And the rest LOL

A6400 has better AF which I thought wasn't of much interest to you.
I actually like it size wise. I don't think they will change it because they sell boat loads. So from Sony's point why spend money fixing what's not broken.
My main issue are the lenses.

Ok well, in a very loose link to Sony, I thought I'd add a photo to the group. Hopefully as I am on holiday next week I should be able t actually get the Rii out a few times. Thats the plan anyway.

Back to the photo, I recently got a shiny new toy, so I had the perfect opportunity to share a few pics. This was one of my favourites. Taken with my iPhone X (Sony sensor) ;)

AMG Power by Chris Heathcote, on Flickr

Nice toy! E53 AMG? I have gone the other way and gone full EV and I am doing between 18-20k miles a year
I have a iPhone XR and use the Moment lenses for family / quick snaps. The quality is good enough which is why I am cutting down on my Sony gear.

The days of £50 notes have long gone.. using £5 notes at the moment, but that too is coming to an end lol. :D
Another shift in career direction and the impeding purchase of a new car has made me rethink my GAS / gadget collection, so starting to cut down on my Sony gear.
My original plan was to start doing weddings but that kept getting put on the back burner as my IT career was taking priority, it still is.

I think that's a C63 AMG.

By the way how do you cope with 18k miles per annum using EV cars? Do you do long haul?

I wanna get a tesla for my next car.

How are you getting on with these new plastic notes, they remind me of the old Izal shiny bog rolls spread it around rather than wipe it off.:hungover:

I was doing around 18-20k miles pa in my Golf R, it was costing around £400pm to fuel
Then moved on my wifes old Polo 1.4... now costing around £200-225pm to fuel.
The EV hasnt arrived yet but it will most likely cost less than £50-75pm, so for my usage, it was a good way forward.
I work in Derby so have a daily round trip of around 95 miles per day, 5 days a week.

The distance seems manageable with a single charge. I bet the difference is huge when you downgrade from Golf R to Polo 1.4

We have charge points at work but my plan is to try and stick with charging at home. :)
Yeah, the downgrade from the Golf R to a Polo 1.4 was massive, the wife was happy though as the proceeds from the Golf R paid for her Tiguan lol.
I thought I would be ok running the Polo for a while but it's doing my head in. lol

I've previously noticed issues when people with darker skin are the main subject and in modern times I've had a few slight focus misses with face detect but if in doubt reverting to a single focus point and deliberately focusing on the subject is the fix or in extreme situations focusing on clothing and letting the depth get the face acceptable is an option.

I was surprised that I had issues even with Mrs WW set as the preferred face, or whatever it's called. The focus still often locked onto the person with a lighter skin tone.

Maybe the newer models are better? Can anyone comment?

I've read up on the subject on other sites and it seems that this has always been an issue (which matches my experience) which is understandable as photography is about light and the fact is that a darker skin tone will meter differently to a lighter one. Hopefully better and more intelligent cameras will overcome this. If they haven't already.

Going away on holiday, not a photography trip but I will get chance to do some landscape.

Do I take the A7rii or A7iii?

Which do you prefer? asking in here you know you're going to get told the A7iii just because it's newer tech. I've been looking at the A7Rii again, there's a few things I don't like about it, but that output! also you're less likely to worry about it getting damaged/lost

As mentioned by @Cagey75 its newer tech.
I just think its a snappier body compared to the A7R II which is sluggish.
When on Holiday, you just need to get the shot and carry on enjoying the time, I feel with the A7 III, it would allow you to do this. Eye-AF is a really useful tool in cutting down composition time etc.

That’s very true. However, I’ll only be taking landscape images so speed isn’t an issue at all. I do prefer the A7iii definitely, even if just for the dual card slots. But then the extra resolution may be nice!

A7rii is sluggish to operate, I find it ok in speed of AF etc.
