My photography roadmap

I decided to whiteboard my digital photography journey and the next steps, I might take. So I roadmapped the cameras and lenses I’ve owned in different categories, to see the linkages and the evolution.

I moved from Canon to Fuji after I tried mirrorless, the Canon offering wasn’t good enough for my main uses. I’ve left Fuji because I had an impulse buy of the Panasonic 200mm f/2.8 and even at 50% it’s expensive. The dotted lines are lenses used in two categories and dotted boxes are potential next purchases.

It was an interesting exercise, probably confirms my GAS, but might be of interest to someone else.

I think when you do this it’s interesting to see actual use too. You can have all the gear in the world but that’s not the main thing about photography.

I’ve found I’ve much happier with minimal kit. I’ve recently moved over to Sony from Nikon, part of the reason is to downsize kit. Once I’ve sold the Sony 70-200 f4 that I got because I had one with Nikon I will be down to two lenses (24-105 and 100-400) which will cover all my wildlife and landscape needs. Much easier to lug about and great to not be worrying about if I have the right lens when I only have two to choose from.

Absolutely fair point, I know I have had a lot of kit and I agree I need to consider what I actually need. Much of what I have now gets used quite a lot, apart from the astro lens & the PL200 which are a bit specialised.

I've always had minimal (native) kit really.

Canon 450D > 5D2 > Sony A7 (with a dabble into Fuji XE2 in between)

I might list the stuff though myself just out of interest.

450D I only had 2 lenses. 5D2 I swapped about a bit but no more than 3/4 at a time. I tried the XE2 with a 23mm & 56mm.

Sony A7 is my longest owned body starting with old manual lenses then gradually going more native as & when. I've tried Canon FD's (28, 50, 85) Yashica ML (still own as have a film camera) Helios lenses & various others.

I'm quite happy now with my main kit of the 40/1.2, 21/3.5 & 85/1.8 :) I also have a Samyang 24/1.4 but that is strictly Astro only.

Not something I'll ever do. They don't even make wallpaper long enough for all the kit I've bought, sold or just borrowed!

A good idea. A way to get to grips with your past as it relates to the present. I have a suggestion to add to the list. Why not write down the price you paid for each piece and keep a running total. NO? Don't want to give you nightmares at how much money you have thrown away. Switching between interchangeables can give anyone nightmares. The cost of indecision? Maybe it would be a good exercise to get to grips with all your indecision. Realizing what the cost of all that is helps you stick with your decisions better.

If I was going to list the price paid, then I would also need to list the price received when I moved the kit on. Otherwise the analysis is biased to one perspective, mind you I’m not saying I’m anywhere near being in a budget surplus.

Fun and useful exercise :) I did do something similar recently to identify gear I was no longer going to use to sell on. I’m still left with several options for each gene, some lenses covering multiple uses.

30D + kit lens + 50/1.8 back in like 2007?

Had a Tamron 17-50/2.8.

Sold it all and replaced with 5D2 around 2009?

Add all the L glass from 16mm up to 135mm with 4 to 5 speeslites.

Then 5D3 and 5D4.

Upgraded the 35L to mk2 when that came out, Canon 50/1.4 replaced with Sigma 50/1.4 Art but the whole kit remains pretty solid and unchanged for about 10 years.

2018 I bought a Sony A73 to adapt my Canon glass.

Slowly bought more and more Sony glass in 2018.

Summer 2019 I sold all Canon stuff except a tilt shift lens. Now I have pretty much the same set up with the Canon but in Sony.

The difference really is I lack a replacement for the 24-70/2.8 as it was one lens I used the least along with the 135L.

I also have a Fuji with 3 primes on the side. The Fuji is not a replacement but and addition.
