The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Ive also read something similar.

I think you can choose grey, white and red, that came with FW update.

Thanks. Fingers crossed for FW update then.

Im in Tokyo and ive not come across another Sony shooter.... Well not local ones, met a dutch dude who has an A7R3, so he says... He didnt have it with him, just what he told me when he commented on my A73. Ive seen pretty much all other brands from Fuji to Leica.

It’s the one real bug bear that we’ve all been hoping for an update to sort. It doesn’t seem to be coming when they’ve given it to the A9.

It how Sony make money hope upgrade to spend and to keep Sony in profit

Nonsense, Sonys been releasing decent FW updates since the A7ii got adapted PDAF.

MK3 and Riii got
Real-time Eye AF
Real-time Animal Eye AF
Interval Shooting

A9 has had loads of updates already, to many to list.

Yeah because other camera companies never do that.

I guess Nikon limiting the D750 to 1/4000 and the Z's to having only one card slot was just an oversight

Both of which are much more important than the colour of the focus point.

Don't forget that awesome battery grip lol

Yes since I am not a fanboy i agree it a bit daft what they have done.. But this doesn't bother me as I dont buy battery grips. But for those that does it a be disappointing.

Me neither but it is a really stupid mistake.

Yes I agree no idea why it happened and wether there are connecter in the camera to allowed functions I dont know..

You may as well call the A9 of 2019 A92

After the comments about the Nikon Z battery grip I had to look it up to see what you are all talking about!

I can see that it’s not of the usual ‘battery grip’ design without the shutter button or camera controls. If Nikon had carried on calling it ‘battery pack’ and not confusing it further by interchanging the words pack and grip that would help.

I don’t think it’s been designed as a battery grip as such but as a battery pack. The ability to utilise hot swapping of batteries whilst the camera is still working is a great feature for photographers that need a continuous power source like time lapse or Astro photography. That’s actually quite a unique feature that no one else has (as far as I’m aware). Yes, that’s quite a niche market as probably a lot of previous battery pack users want the additional shutter button and vertical grip. It’s weird Nikon brought the battery pack to the market first but they could always bring out an actual battery grip without the hot swapping ability to cover that market in the future. I guess it depends on what Nikon’s market research said was the main reason why photographers buy ‘battery grips’. Is the main reason the additional power or the additional shutter button and controls. Personally I would have said having both vertical controls and additional battery power would be equal requirrments but if their survey only asked for the main reason (ie one option) then it could have skewed the results. Either that or hot swapping and addition buttons can’t be done together (probably the most likely reason).

Think you have missed the point here.

They never intended on them having any sort of grip. When rumours first started appearing about it in a negative way due to poor Z battery life they crapped themselves and then decided on the battery pack as a way of appeasing the negative feedback they were getting.

They made a real mess of it.

I’m hoping the AF box colour does come in a firmware update but I’m not holding out much hope now the A7R3 has been replaced with the A7R4. My only hope at present is the A73 and A7r3 are of the same generation. The A73 is still the current model so hopefully if that gets it the A7r3 can get it too as there probably isn’t much extra work in it. My fear is the A74 comes along in the new year scuppering any hopes of an update.

Ahh I couldn’t get that from a you tube video reviewing the grip.

My feelings with all of this is that Canon and Nikon were late to the mirrorless party and they are just treading the same development lined as Sony and others have done before them. I guess at some point they will catch up. But I guess it depends how far others move on and how many users don’t jump ship in the meantime.

In manual mode any idea how to prevent the viewfinder going black before focussing on A7 ii?

At the moment when I BBF the image is visible but as soon as focus is achieved back to black.

Probably not explaining it too well.

That is surprising, as the mirrorless cameras seem to be more popular in Asia, and Sony are the biggest sellers.

Anyone using the Cascable app to get A7 photos on to the iPad via Wifi?

I'm trying to get better (smoother) workflow in getting images from the A7ii on to the iPad while trying to avoid the klunkiness of the Sony Imaging Edge Mobile app. My aim is to get them into an app like Darkroom or Pixelmator Photo or Affinity.

(Not really wanting to do this for remote control, although that's a maybe for the future.)

The only times the evf should go black is if there's no light, maybe something to do with Live View setting Effect being on and needing to be off? But if that's the answer you'll need to check the exposure as a black evf could mean a black picture.

Out of interest, was that from around the Brackly/Banbury/Northants area? Red tanked beezers are fairly rare, and I saw one like that this morning on the way into Banbury.

Sorry. It’s at Newlands Corner in Guildford.

It’s a 650 Super Rocket. Lovely old thing.

Basically in the studio only the modelling lights are on.

Camera set to 1/200th at f11 in manual mode and can't see a thing through the EVF.
Press the BBF and very bright image appears in EVF and lens focusses (50mm f1.8 FE).

Once focus is achieved back to black again which makes it hard to recompose.

It must be a setting as everything else about the body works fine.

Been Googling it but no luck so far.

It's showing you what your ambient light exposure is - the EVF goes bright because the camera is opening the lens aperture and taking light in to focus, then it returns you back to showing you how your photo will look.

No idea how you compensate for flash - I expect with a recognised flash in the hotshoe it will show you something different through the viewfinder..
