I first thought this was the end of the 120 roll curling and touching the film on the spiral in dev. Rollei 400IR is extremely curly.

But then I discovered it on about 5 images on the strip of 16.

Any ideas as to the cause?

I immediatley thought some sort of scanner issue but it sounds like the stripe is actually visible on the negatives...Is that right?

That's correct - it's on the neg.

In that case, the most obvious cause would be light entry into the camera.

What camera was it and the 5 images affected, are they sporadic or all together?. At the beginning or end of the roll?

Is it purely visual, or can you feel it? Is it on the emulsion side of the neg or the other side? Are the affected images next to each other?

And is it a camera with a red window on the back?

are they sporadic
Yes. Looking more closely at the images, on some, it's very faint, and on other images it's impossible to tell. Counting top left, it's clear on frames 2, 5, 6, 9 & 11

Pentax 645n - so no.

Just spent time examining the neg and I honestly can't tell.

Focal plane shutter running vertically as we look at the photos above?

Yep

Any changes of shutter speed, especially in the two pairs of shots in the third row?

I'm tempted to think it's related to the shutter if it travels across the narrower dimension of the film gate. The shot of the path through the woods (row 2, left-most) has a distinct transition between light and dark, suggesting a curtain that's running too slow or fast for half of its travel.

Interesting. The 645n stamps the negatives.

Edit as it's not clear,
1: 1/350sec (clean) 1/90sec (line)
2: 1/90sec (clear) 1/60sec (line)

It's a shame there's 2 shots at the same shutter speed - one clear, one not.

Sooo...

To update the thread in case of search fu working for someone.

I noticed that on the last roll I shot, one image that didn't have a stripe was shot on manual (i.e. not auto-aperture). So I just ran a roll through and took every shot on full manual and there's no stripe.

I therefore surmise that the camera is having issues with the shutter when aperture is set manually, and shutter speed is set automatically. This ties in with the other issue the camera has in that the aperture will "stick" at the chosen aperture, rather than popping back open when I'm on shutter priority and the camera has to decide on aperture. Something is wrong with the automatic functions.

I've emailed Miles who sent me to Asahi Photo who sent me to Joyn Pye Technical who sent me to Rüdiger Maerz GmbH in Germany and no-one could help. Also tried Harrow Technical and no dice.

Fortunately it's liveable withable and still relatively fast to use by balancing the exposure with aperture. Most of the time I'm more concerned with shutter speed and have it set to something that doesn't change (1/125 etc) and will allow me to get sharp shots.

Still sad though. I'm wondering "what's next"...

:(
That's a shame Ian.

Unfortunatley a lot of our toys are knocking on in years and like us, they don't go on forever.

At least for the moment you can still use it and obtain decent results so best to focus ( punn intended :)) on that.

In case anyone ever comes across this with search, I Have Found A Solution!!!!

After getting all depressed that I might have to bin the camera, I read an interesting article that showed exactly the same problem that was down to light seals. I have another back for the 645 which I swapped out and the roll I just put through is fine!!!

Time to order some foam and have a go at replacing the seals so I still have a spare back, but that was such a relief.

That is such good news![emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

Are you developing these at home?

I don't think it is the camera.

It's absolutely the camera sadly. Well, the camera back.

Have developed lots of rolls on 135 and 120 from other cameras with no problems like this. Lots.
