The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

What are you looking to gain by upgrading?
I’ve updated my post with those points:

There’s no doubting the A9 is the better camera for what I do (mainly wildlife). Better AF, real time focusing, no black out, 20FPS on silent shutter, better EVF etc would potentially be better for wildlife but it is £1100-1500 better? There is a lot of talk on here about the A9 being the better choice but when you do the maths is it really going to be worth the extra?

My point is it sounds like a good idea going A7Riii (or A7iii) to A9 on paper but when costed is there really a point to doing it? It’s a lot of money for not a massive gain. It’s not like I’m not able to take photos with the A7Riii.

To be fair to WEX with the trade in bonus I’d get just slightly more for the A7riii than I paid for it a year ago so it wouldn’t have lost anything, it’s just an A9 new UK would be double what I paid for a used A7Riii last year.

I've decided my A7III will stay until I wear it out. Yes I would get more BIF and action keepers if I had an A9 but I get enough from my A7III. As Mr Polin said in his latest video, A7III is probably the best all-round camera from the last 10yrs.

Not sure if you are/were looking for critique but I'll be nice :)
I do like the picture and the star burst but I don't feel the foreground is connecting or leading to the sun.
May be if had moved slightly and used the wave line as your foreground to lead it on to the sun+castle that'd be great!

No, not really or I'd have put it in the critique section on the landscape forum ;)

Not sure what you mean by not connecting but for me, it doesn't need to lead to the sun, I don't particularly like conventional landscape rules, they can make for bloody boring images. Moving wouldn't have made for a nice composition, and the waves were quite erratic.

Thankfully, this is one of my least favourite images from the morning.

fair enough. As I said I did like the image.

Actually i was not really quoting any landscape rules :)
All rules are made to be broken anyway and are more like guidelines at best ;)

Well only you can decide that, for some it is, others it isn't. Just like any other upgrade, is a 1.4 lens worth the money over a 2.8 lens, apsc vs FF etc. For me the improved AF in stills and video, real time tracking, colour focus point, better shutter, 20fps when required, better build, extra top dial, 1/32000, better evf all add up. All the mk3 and a9 are currently excellent value.

Aha, honestly no worries.

I can’t make my mind up on the image myself, I did quite like the way the water moved around the rock, and for me the light reflection draws the eye into the sun. But by this point the best conditions were gone, I went into that bit as the water had just about retreated enough to get a shot. Was quite hard getting comps I was happy with as the landscape was changing with literally every wave.

There are definitely improvements to be had, that I’m not disputing. The points you have raised are all the same points that I can see as good benefits to making the upgrade, but it all comes at a cost for what is only a hobby for me. I guess it’s justifying the extra cost when that same money could be used elsewhere.

The good point of it would be I wouldn’t have lost anything on the A7r3 in the last year if I traded in via WEX. It’s just the A9 would cost a lot more!!!

Ok, so it's better.
Are all the photos you take just now crap?
How much better does the af need to be? Do you really need 20fps?
How will a better evf improve your images?
Does blackout cost you images just now?

If you've got money to burn and can afford it, why not have the best?
But it's not as if what you've got is crap.

Sometimes we just need to appreciate what we've got, and get the best out of it rather than always looking for something we don't have, and may not actually need.

:police::police::police: looks like we've got ourselves a rational thinker in this thread.:police::police::police: (n)

I think goes for an camera since the D700. That’s still a fantastic camera and would probably still get good enough to get me good images today. The A7R3 isn’t rubbish by any stretch, and that’s the big issue as it would be justifying the extra cost which isn’t exactly black and white.

The real issue is no one seems to ever sell an A9 in the classifieds on here ;)

You'll get one cheap when the A10 comes out.

I've managed to resist buying anything aaaaaaalllllll day :D

Apart from a take away, nothing camera related though.

I went for a walk with the film camera this afternoon. Lack of familiarity meant that although I *thought* I'd left it in aperture priority, I'd actually set it to 1000th in manual. In my defense it's the first time it's been out in a year, and I've become too used to looking in the viewfind for information about camera status.

Guess that's the first roll of the year in the bin then.

Maybe we should do a roundup of what everyone's bought or sold at the end of each week?

That should get the gas and envy and lust going :D

I'm still tempted by the Tokina 20mm f2 or the Samyang 17mm f2.8 and vaguely tempted by the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 but as that's a zoom I don't suppose it's really in the running.

The Voigtlander 50mm f2 is still tempting me too.

To trade in an A7Riii for an A9. WEX currently have an extra £300 if you trade in a camera at the same time. For that reason it wouldn’t make as much sense to buy a used A9 from them.

Is it £1100-1500 better? Not with my money but YMMV. Marketing and forums help make you think we need these things and if you don’t have the latest gizmos such as blackout free shooting then the gear is no good anymore, but that’s obviously not the case.

Sure the bells and whistles are nice and if we all had endless money then we’d all have the latest and greatest, but when we work hard for a living it’s a different prospect.

As for the topic of getting to know local stores mine used to be really good and I bought and sold a lot of gear with them but over the past couple of years they’ve been really shafting me with what they offer for my gear, and offer very little in the way of discounts and as a result I’ve started taking my business elsewhere and sold to places like MPB. Shame really as it was always nice dealing face to face.

Eeek.... as long as I don't have to tell the missus....

Just bought the Batis 40mm f2 and the Sony 24-105mm f4 today....

Thats kind of my thinking- would it really be of benefit for that kind of money. If I’m honest probably not. I’ve been trying to cut down on gear to what I actually use. For Sony I’m down to the A7R3, 24-105 and 100-400. That seems to cover all my needs. I still have a couple of bits of Nikon gear hanging around that I need to get shot of.

I’ve started to use MPB more recently, mainly because their price offers aren’t that far off what you could potentially sell it for on here (that’s even if you can actually sell it on here).

Just a set of front headlight & sidelight bulbs for the Focus this week :)

My next sort of related purchase is going to be a hydration bladder thingy for my Osprey pack. I'm going to modify the pack a little for tripod carrying (well, the other half is :) ) Then, I'm going to be saving for a longer lens for a few months...... FE70-200/4 vs adapted EF70-200/4 vs Tamron 70-180/2.8 :)

I sold an A7III and replaced with an A9, also sold a 70-200 f4 (not used it at all since getting the 135GM) will probably let another A7III go later on, but at the moment between the two of us that leaves us with:

1x A9II
2 x A9
3 x A7III

1 x A7RIV (don’t really count this as it’s my personal camera)

24GM
35 1.8
Sigma 35 Art
55 1.8
85 1.8
85GM
90 2.8
135GM

Tamron 17-28
Tamron 28-75

Would still like to add a longer lens like the 200-600 but struggling to justify the cost for a lens that would only get very occasional use. Still holding out for something from the third party companies at the moment.

Unless a 35GM appears probably won’t be changing much this year. if it does it will replace the other two 35mm’s.

Depending on what it brings to the table might look at swapping out remaining A7III’s for A7IV’s.

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on that

It's just really fast - I have my editing images on the 1TB mSATA system drive, and I get 1:1 views practically instantly vs 5-7 sec in dev mode or 20sec in library mode in LR. Photoraw 2019 is faster handling the 50Mb uncompressed ARWs than LR handling DNG files, but not by enough. Both were previously quite a bit quicker opening NEFs from my D610 than they are the files from the A7III, which is frustrating slow.

In terms of use, the interface feels a bit old-skool windows, and a bit clunky like a piece of community developed software and not like paid software, but the performance is all there. Just makes me wonder whether Faststone would have been just as good for speed but with fewer tools.

If that's the one in Sheffield, I've had the same experience with offers for gear lately. They used to be good, when trading up, but the prices offered for excellent condition gear have been quite low recently.

Definitely, I sold a few bits and pieces to justify the difference. It helps that I only really need 1 fairly cheap lens and my other is also cheap, 35 art and 85 1.8, so my setup cost isn't to ridiculous.

Why don't camera jungle et Al just display the offer price outright instead of all this nonsense about coupons and codes?

Evening Guys,

Can all who have used e-infinity tell me about their opinions etc... Do you get warranty? Do they accept returns? Is Warranty transferable?

cheers

You get 1 years warranty, but you have to send the faulty item back.
Do not think the warranty is transferable.
14 day returns.
I've bought from them without hassle.
Their prices are great, but reviews tend to indicate things start to fall apart a bit if you have any issues.
I tend to take the view that at the price, you're getting new for the same price as used if buying privately, and you don't normally have a warranty if buying privately, so you take your chances.

If probably do the same. I’ve recently sold a 70-200 f4, that could potentially go towards it. I’ve also cut my lenses down to the 24-105 and 100-400. They cover all my lens needs.

I think this year I may need to consider a new computer. That won’t be cheaper especially if I stay with an iMac.

I've bought several items from them - great prices and swift delivery.
I was not happy with one of the lenses I bought - there was no problem with returning it to a UK address and subsequent credit.

I’m right in saying there based and send goods from Hong Kong?
