All things related to Apple phones & tablets

Why?

If you're cynical it's enforced obsolescence to make you buy a new phone.

If you're happy with tech progress then it's because it isn't powerful enough to run the latest OS without major performance limitations which Apple have decided will devalue the experience so won't support. If you want the latest performance and features then you need a newer phone.

Your iPad Air 2 is more powerful than the iPhone so gets a stay of execution.
If he has iOs12 on his iPhone and iPadOS 13 on his iPhone there will be incompatibilities between the two. The most obvious one is that everything on Reminders app will disappear from the iPhone but remain on the iPad and no new reminders will transfer. I think there will be glitches in the email syncing too but can’t actually prove it, partly because iOS 13 seems a bit shaky in the email department still — as @wibbly in post #717 may indicate.

Edit: to say Reminders on Mac pre Catalina will also disappear. I know not everyone uses Reminders but I feel one incompatibility may indicate there are others. Reminders in iOS 13 is a ‘new‘ app.

Yes, native email app.
It’s not working as well as it used to for me. It is slow to collect and update/sync. ( iPad Air3, iPad Pro, iPhone 7+, Mac, all up to date).

erm i just updated my phone when i knew was not getting update and iphone 6 is just thrown in the drawer to gather dust and fade away :)

Howdy folks, my first time in this thread so please be gently if this has been asked before :)

Does anyone know why the iPhone 6 Plus has been left off the list of iOS13 devices? My iPad Air 2 is considered worthy of the upgrade so why not the phone?

I love my phone and it does everything I need it to but if it's going to be left to die in the wilderness of iOS12 I'll have to seriously consider replacing it with something else :(

The iPhone 6 was the last iPhone with only 1GB of RAM, iOS 13 requirements are 2GB or more. Your iPad Air 2 has 2GB of RAM (same reason why the 1GB iPad Air was also dropped)

Many thanks for the responses, folks.

I can understand a technical limitation of the phone meaning it can't keep being updated. I'm not one for buying new tech just because it's there so the 6+ will remain in use until it finally won't do what I need. That could be a while cos it only gets used to (wait for it) make phone calls and send texts and emails so I'll take my chances and see how long I can keep it going :)

iOS/iPadOS 13.3 and WatchOS 6.1.1 were released this evening.
And an update to MacOS but it’s not visible on one at present.

Just quickly returning to my recent moan about not being able to install iOS13 on my 6+ - I unwittingly found a solution ...

... simply drop the phone and damage it enough that it is uneconomical to repair and let the insurance company replace it with a newer model :)

The day after Boxing Day the 6+ leapt fell out of my jacket pocket and landed face down on our hard wood lounge floor - ouch! There were a few cracks on the screen but it was still working and I initially thought I'd just persevere with it but SWMBO insisted I took it to our local repair man. He offered to fit a new screen for £50 so I figured why not? The problem came when he took the screen off and several parts fell out and it stopped working. We decided at that point to make it an insurance job and they were brilliant ... just took the details of what happened, collected my policy excess and arranged for a replacement to be sent out for next day delivery. I had a phone call a couple of hours later to say they were really sorry but they didn't have any 6+ in stock so would I accept an alternative? Well, it would have been rude not to, don't you think? Only a 7+ but I'm not complaining :)

I bought some AirPods Pro today. I’m liking them!
I had some delivered today! So far OK but I can’t get the test to give OK unless I hold them in.

EDIT: should have been “test to give OK”.

The Pros are very good. Too pricey for me so I think I’ll go for the Sony wf-1000m3 as I can get them at the airport

They are damn pricey (though the non-pros are fairly good price now) and if I wasn’t having hearing problems I wouldn’t countenance the price :( .

Is it possible to easily connect up a card reader and external drive to an iPad Pro and transfer canon raw files from card to drive ?
At the moment when I’m away I do this on my MacBook but my iPad is getting on a bit now and am thinking of getting a new one and I wondered if I could use an iPad Pro to do the same thing

This thread maybe shows some pitfalls: https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/getting-photos-onto-ipad-pro.706030/#post-8604307
I‘ve never had a problem using a card reader with various iPads but haven’t tried hard drive yet — it would need to be powered I think.
Aren’t there external hard drives that take SD cards and suck files onto them?

can someone help please my mrs has a iphone 7 that has suddenly (in the last 4-5 days) started losing its power very quickly.
the battery health says 100% a new battery was fitted about 2-3 months ago.
the phone also randomly restarts itself or just closes apps
by lose power quick she had been complaining so i finally looked today the phone was taken off charge from 100%.
I was looking through the settings etc for approx 8 minutes to find something amiss and could not and in that 8 min i watched the power go down to 82% it was basically losing 1% every 30 seconds.
I have reset all settings but that has not helped and when it rebooted after it was down to 59%

Was the battery replacement done by Apple?

Local shop is no longer there lol.
apparently it closed down about 2 months ago.
I have just checked my records and the new battery was fitted 9 months ago.
It still claims it’s battery health is 100%.
im not even sure that could be possible after 9 months of continuous use?

Some battery drain issues are down to rogue apps. How full is the phone storage? Once they're nearly full they start doing weird things as well. If it's junked up with stuff then you need to have a bit of a deleting spree. There is an automatic storage management thing. Make sure that is switched on. It removes apps that are unused but leaves the icon so it will just download it again if you happen to use it again. See if it behaves better after a clean up.

If it's still misbehaving: make sure all of it is backed up into icloud and wipe it and do a full restore to clean settings ie what it was when it was new. Then only download the apps that are actually used. See how it behaves after that.

I think the problem with that is they aren’t just batteries any more but electronic devices :( so who knows what it means especially if it’s a non-Apple battery, which sounds likely :(

Already fully reset and wiped everything but still the same :( so can’t be a app etc.
Sorry I really should have mentioned this before.
Did the power and volume button reset while plugged in to the laptop.

Is that the DFU (Device Firmware Update) that you did, because that‘s the ultimate and returns to factory settings though tricky to get it in the right state and conflicting instructions everywhere . However I still think it’s a dodgy battery :(.

Yes it was the DFU I did. I just don’t want to pay out for another battery and find that is not that.
