Nikon Z* mirrorless

All this negativity about the Z. Even by people who have never touched one (other forums). Makes me want to sell mine. Even though it works fine for my purposes. ;)
I love the glass and the feel of the bodies. For a first foray into mirrorless for Nikon it's been a great effort. It's widely know that the AF isn't up to D5000 levels in the DSLR range. They can correct it if the put the effort in, I'm sure.
Don't get caught up in the negativity, as everyone seems to have it out for them lately. If it does what you want from it then it's the camera for you.

I was looking at getting a Z6 but that really puts me off. I'm going to pull the trigger on a 2nd camera body shortly, and it looks like either another D750, a D810 or an XH-1. I'd love to go into the mirrorless world, but not keen on Sony.

Here's one fo the reasons - a lovely shot with live view on my D750 but focus is just pants in this mode on a DSLR - boo. This image is just about acceptable - but wish it had focused more accurately - it's a tad soft

Use a smaller aperture, you'll get better hit rate.

Be thankful you never ran an M43 system, the nay saying and p***ing all over the system gets really tiring, yet it still works very well in the right hands.

I did. From its incept (coming from E series) to 2014. I was even a mod on the UK E series forums. If I were to change it would be back to Oly.

Cool, didn' know you were an ex-M43 soldier :) I've been considering a return to M43 tbh, I found the system more than capable for my needs. But then I want to try FFML ... and I cannot afford to have it all. I think i jammed into APSC for now just as an in-betweener but honestly believe either side of it is better

Maybe the new D780 is for you. Has the Z6 love view.

I’m sure you know the AF on the Z’s is WAY better than the D750 live view ;)

Not shooting wide open?????? ;)

Yes, as I understand it - performance shooting from the rear screen is no different compared to through the EVF. Can you drag the focus point about quickly using the touch screen? I was quite impressed by the speed of dragging the spot on the X-T3 demo I saw on YouTube. Night and day compared to trying to get the focus spot to move on the D750.

I do like shooting wide open. Pictures look more 3D and I just love buttery smooth bokeh

All cameras have strengths and weaknesses - I moved from a Z6 to an A73 and miss the fantastic EVF and rear screen ! The one on the A73 is awful ! You have no idea if you’ve taken a good shot or not !!

Not sure why the Sony owners feel the need to criticise the Z cameras so much as they are excellent in many ways.

Only reason I swapped was because of the lack of lenses - in particular light prime lenses and third party lenses. It annoyed me that Nikon don’t open up to other lens makers.

Dunno tbh, I don’t use the touchscreen.

Not even for moving the focus point while using the EVF? How does using the direction buttons feel when you have so much more frame coverage to get around?

Sorry, but I own a Z6 and the AF on it is way better than it was on my D750.

Check my previous posts, most of the latest ones are photos of dogs in notion...if that isn't good enough I'm not sure what would be.

I've just realised you can't move the points with the screen

I've never liked doing it that way whatever body I've had, it's just habit for me to use the d-pad and/or joystick. It's not too bad this way tbh, although I've decreased the number of selectable points which makes it quicker to navigate.
One from a freezing cold Sunday morning.

Really nice, very 'crisp'
I don’t think I will - unless this cancer makes me much weaker. my comment was made in sarcasm as much as anything else.
I didn't realise you had been diagnosed with cancer, very sorry to hear this. I hope you make a full recovery.

Thanks Snerkler - I am very confident in a positive outcome. I have early stage prostate cancer (get yourself checked!) and currently spend 5 days a week for 4 weeks in Jimmy's Leeds, having radiotherapy and hormone therapy. The main side effect is tiredness. Luckily I don't have to commute. There is an excellent (free) hotel in the hospital. Leaving most of the day free to roam exotic Leeds, looking in Dales and Jessops windows ...

Wishing you a speedy recovery Stephen. My brother has just gone through this and is doing fine. Leeds has lots of photo opportunities.

Stephen hope it all works out, and that the recovery process is quick, all the best

All the very best for your treatment Stephen, and here's to a quick and complete recovery. Take care of yourself.

Simon.

Don't know you that all on here but wishing you all the best with your recovery too

Always good to pick up stuff from you @snerkler. Is reducing the number of selectable points possible in the live view mode of a D750 off the top of your head? I find myself having to lie on the ground too much and would prefer to stay clean

Leeds does indeed have many photo ops; however I am only taking my little Panasonic LX100. Though it's a capable wee thing.

I live about 45 minutes north of Leeds, but must get down there at some point with the camera. Some of the architecture really does appeal to me.

Cheers,

Simon.

Whereabouts? I'm about the same distance, maybe a tad further, to the north-west in Settle.

All the best Stephen L, hopefully you recover quickly and fully.

@srhmoto ... Simon, Amazing pictures as always. I wish I had half of your talent.

It's definitely possible with the VF, not sure about Live view tbh. The manual doesn't mention anything either. IMO the D750 reduces the number of AF points too much, from 51 to 11 IIRC.

After thawing out from my trip to the Infinity Bridge first thing and a rugby coaching session, I headed up to Roseberry Topping on the North York Moors with the promise of nice light as the afternoon wore on. I wasn't disappointed :). Wasn't any warmer mind you!!

Best of luck with your recovery, dont overdo it, rest seems the best thing and some TP to keep your blood pressure high :D. Take care.

There’s a fine line between rest and boredom. :D
I’ll read the Sony thread to keep the heart racing. :exit:
