M 4/3 system

This might be a stupid question but are all M 4/3 lens the same mount?

No such thing as a stupid question Matthew, and @twist is right, all lenses with m4/3 mounts (regardless of manufacture) will fit any m4/3 mount camera (regardless of manufacturer).

Cheers,

Simon.

However: most Olympus lenses do not have anti-shake built in because Olympus generally build it into the camera. Most Panasonic lenses do have anti-shake built into because most Panasonic cameras do not generally have anti-shake built into the camera. There are exceptions to both these cases so you'll want to check when choosing a combination if anti-shake is important to you.

This is really great information as I’m giving serious consideration as part of my on going rehab to making the new Olympus E-M1 mk3 as my main camera and was thinking on adding the Panasonic 100-400 to it for when I want to do a little nature etc

Good choice. I use mine on the Panasonic G9 and that's an effective combination too. This is less than 1/10th of the frame at 400mm...

The EM1.3 looks a cracking camera. If I had the money I'd upgrade my EM1.2

I switched last year to a Olympus omd1-mkii and Panasonic 100-400 following heart failure and having stent fitted ,all up weight of rig sub 1.4kg plenty of shots from the set up both on here and my flickrstream .

If though your buying new I would recommend the 0lympus 300.f4 as it will take a t.c 1.4 or 2x and at the moment very cheap on wex and other sites .far better lens

Also forget any pre.conceived ideas about a small sensor etc , it’s extremely hard to tell what’s from what I.e full frame or mft

I went to my local LCE last Friday as Olympus rep was in-store spoke a great length about upcoming releases of the new lens the 150 400 he thinks will be October the Olympus 100-400 should be mid year.

I have both the 300 with the MC 20 teleconverter along with the Panasonic 100 400 both excellent lenses the 100 400 great walk around lens and the 300 is great for hide work

Supposedly, Olympus are bringing out a 100-400 soonish as well, no idea about the specs yet, but it might be worth waiting for

Not the 150-400mm but also there is supposed to be a 100-400mm to compete directly with the Panasonic 100-400mm.

Certainly intended to be more budget worthy than the big "white" one ;(

Thank you all for the great information and also the other viable options all worth considering

As to concerns over sensor size have been using the little baby m10 for a couple of years as a way to feel out the brand/operative nature of the body, and with current life changes I feel time is currently right to make the change into Olympus being my primary system

But I’m also making the conscious decision now that I want to buy the best lens to start with even if that means waiting for savings to allow some purchases

The Pro lenses are very good I have 3 12-100 40-150 300mm not sure what your view is on grey imports but savings can be had (Remember it's your money)

HDEW currently have EM mark 2 at £799 plus 3 year warranty 400 less than most UK shops

To be fair I’ve used the grey route in the past via DRev for my 5D3 back in 2012 so I’m not adverse to it at all and I’ll likely also wait a few months to avoid the new premium [emoji23]

As things stand

The one lens I know will be my start is I think 7-14/2.8 as it will be my main go to when it comes to light painting

Then I was thinking 12-100 as my general walk about

And 100-400 as my long option

Ideally I’ll also pick up a couple of fast primes too including one to double as a macro

I’m also not adverse to buying quality used lens either

If you also look at my photo stream on Flickr you will notice that apart from the 100-400 my other lenses are four thirds mount ,one of the advantages of the mkii and e.mix plus I believe the mk5.iii .. and although a tad older they tend to be another way into using pro lenses without breaking the bank .

Sounds good to me I’m excited for this upgrade when it happens and I don’t don’t object to saving money on lens by taking the older generation

Hopefully this will all also help with my recovery but that’s for a different topic

It’ll be so much easier for me than always carting round the big heavy 5D3

I think you'll notice the difference. The first time I went out with my Panasonic G1 rather than my 5D I had to keep checking the G1 was still in the bag.

Mathew I had major heart failure last year and was rushed into surgery and had a stent fitted. . It’s been a long slow road to recovery and I still limit how far I wander ( just in case) that plus galloping old age 74 in a couple of weeks has curtailed me but not stopped me . And to be honest I haven’t really noticed a great deal of difference in performance between systems . My pics in the Olympus thread and bird thread speak for themselves

I’m still in rehabilitation right now I’ve been in hospital for a long time now but recovery is going well

This purchase/kit change is all geared to ensure when I’m finally home recovery can continue both physically and mentally

I have the Panasonic 8-18mm f2.8-4 instead of the 7-14 because I wanted to fit filters it is also lighter and very sharp too.

Consider and E-M5ii with a 12-45 f4 as a walkabout kit to start with nice and light and something to get going with sooner

Thanks a very informative post and I appreciate it, I’m not entirely an Olympus virgin I do have a little baby original on-d 10 with the 12-45 kit lens which I purchased a few years back in order to try the brand out as it were

It’s a very good point you raise about filters but my primary driving factor would be the faster aperture for my star scapes where I prefer a ultra wide and fast but we shall see
