Can anyone recommend a cheap mono printer/scanner for document printing please? Will not have a lot of use - looking for reliability more than anything else.
Wired, not wifi.

Thanks,
AL

May not work for you but I mostly use the phone cam for that these days.

Too big unfortunately - I need something with a max width and depth of 40 cms - should have mentioned this before - apologies. This will probably rule out laser printers.

Unlikely to find a mono inkjet! Mrs Nod uses a Canon all-in-one for her scanning, copying and printing needs. It's a fair few years old now but still works perfectly. She runs it wirelessly but used to plug it in via USB. Not sure of the exact model but can see from dialogue boxes that it's an MG4100 series. Always fed with genuine Canon inks (but since it's used for business, they're tax deductible!)

Thanks very much for all your searching. I've got an old Canon MP460 which I've had for at least 12 years(!). Starting to play up a little now.

Think I'll investigate the Canon offerings available now.

Thanks again for your help.

Very precise space requirements. Have you thought about separate scanner with wireless printer, which could be anywhere?

I use a MG5750 which is serving me well it has a depth of 37 cm and a width of 45cm

I use it with very cheap inks fro 7dayshop.com with no trouble at all.
A set of large Five inks costs only. £7.49
(Non-OEM PGI-570 & CLI-571 XL 5 Ink Multipack for Canon B/B/C/M/Y £7.49)

Probably the cheapest you will find one right now is a Currys clearance with damaged box for £89.99.

They are £99.99 new in store.
These are one of the few ink jets that you can very simply remove the ink head for cleaning if it gets seriously blocked ( instructions on Youtube)

When I looked into the running costs for a new printer using non OEM inks it came out best of the bunch.

As I do not use a printer very often my last Epson had to be chucked because of a blocked head after only three years, a new head cost as much as a new printer.

Too wide unfortunately but there must be a smaller Canon out there - I'll keep on searching.

It can be used wirelessly so it could perhaps live somewhere else. you only need a power socket.
If not I would take a trip to currys they have most makes and models in store.

I'm not clued up with wireless printing. I want to print from my pc which, as far as I'm aware(!) does not have wifi.

I've just had the tape measure out and the width is just about the same as my current Canon so I'll look at that again.

Thanks Terry.

Are you using a wireless router for your internet connection? If so, you connect the printer via WiFi and that makes the printer available (subject to 'installing' it initially on the PC and other computers in the house) to every computer, phone, tablet...etc

FWIW that is my/our setup with my now quite old HP P1102W mono laser printer. I have had the printer a good few years and last look at the total pages through it were >43,000 off. I now use third party toner carts and it has been a trooper of printer.

NB having said that I am now looking at getting the Canon TS8350 inkjet for times when scanning is needed, printing of colour docs and the odd photo printing at home that I want to do in future. We will be keeping the Mono Laser as much more economical to run compared to an inkjet!

It doesn’t need Wi-Fi provided your router has it. Printer connects wirelessly to router and computer is on the same network. At least mine works that way (Brother laser) and I can print from phone/iPad wirelessly and computer wired.

PS to the above

The TS8350 costs £149.99 but its immediate predecessor the TS8250 is £85.99
Looking at the specs, unless I have misunderstood something, the only difference is that the 8250 only has WiFi LAN at 2.4Ghz, whereas the 8350 adds the 5Ghz band.

I prefer where I can to use the 5Ghz on my router but as it stands now the printer(s) will be in the same room as the router so the signal will be strong as it can possibly be for its connection to the router....................even if say SWMBO laptop is in another room connected via 2.4Ghz WLAN that should make no difference.

So, unless someone knows of anything I might have missed the cheaper one looks like a no brainer ~ doesn't it ???

I’ve got the Canon MX475 - alway been ok for ordinary scanning and draft printing (use a different printer for proper photo printing)
It’s got a USB connection as well as WiFi and is two cartridge so you can have it as a dedicated mono printer. And at £35 it counts as cheap in my book!

The document scanner app on my smartphone straightens and corrects documents amazingly well. I've often scanned documents when away from home too. These I print out on a small cheap Samsung laser printer. The cartridge has lasted since forever. The printer is connected to the home router. So I can print from any PC or directly from the phone. Good quality and easy to use.

Yes, that’s what I suggested at #2 but it won‘T suit the OP.

How about https://www.ijtdirect.co.uk/product_detail/20129/ this will probably be an old model (still with 12 month guarantee) so all you pay for is 5 toners and they throw the laser printer in as well. It is small enough for your requirements and only does mono. It has WIFI but you can also use USB.
I bought a HP Photosmart printer from them under a similar deal about 12 years ago and I only replaced it last year as I could not get a decent Windows 10 driver.

Yes. But you were given no reason. It's possible that the OP assumes the mobile experience must be bad. So maybe if I share my experience, it might help clarify how good it can be.

I don't have or want a smartphone at the moment :)

I'm going to try the Canon MX475 as suggested earlier. Should be adequate for the small amount of printing I do.

Though of course it could be an iPad or, I assume an Android/etc tablet which could be a cheaper option. But it’s your choice, which is why I didn’t push it ;)

The inks for the MX475 are not exactly cheap nor are the non oems.
But then you either get cheap printers or cheaper inks.
You will not be able to take out the print head to clean it when they block.

Great stuff - hope it does the business for you!!
