Panic Buying

Usually a discussion involves more than a one word reply?

My own view if we weren't shown images on every sort of media about the panic buying it would calm down again within 14 days; trouble is those who do not wish to panic buy are.

Wow what a pain, we always do online shopping with Tesco, we have two special needs kids at home, and its a lot easier than dragging them around supermarkets and at £5 delivery, a lot less then what it costs in petrol and time, but it seems thats not going to work now, our usual order has hardly anything left , no butter? only allowed three carrots? and numerous other items cancelled by tesco, so looks like we are going have to go out and see whats left, it made me laugh when they substituted wifes daffodils for spring onions, wonder what they will look like in a vase

And this is the problem. Idiots start it off then the rest of us are forced into doing it. I’ve just driven past my local Tesco at 6.45am and there must be 5-600 people queuing outside to get in. This will end up causing problems for people like me who are in a vulnerable group as i looks like I will have to spend my Saturday touring around supermarkets and local shops just to get my usual weekly shop rather than just one visit to my local Asda.

Hope it wasn't a fluke but been to Tesco for our main weekly shop and got everything we wanted

Arent the supermarkets having a 1 hr window for people in your situation?

It won't be long before all the locusts have filled every spare inch of space at home with 6 months of stuff and stop shopping then the sensible weekly shoppers will see full shelves and no queues.

Its only for the elderly, I have medical issues.
Email the CEO's they seem very open to doing everything they can to assist.

* To ensure more vulnerable and elderly customers can shop in-store, Tesco will prioritise one hour every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning between 9-10am (except in Express stores), and asks that people respect this.

But will they?

I do hope so. However, what happens if you need to shop for an elderly (>70) relative/neighbour, will we need "badges" to say what we are doing, are we expected to mix with all the other fit and healthy people? Or will it be like a "Blue Badge" - abused by a few?

I think an earlier time (8 - 9 am) would have been better to be honest. Now that all schools are shutting I think there will be lots of children having to go shopping with their parents. Can't imagine they will want to get up early if no school ;)

You've not been to Dagenham then, they think nothing of taking their kids shopping at 1:00 am.

Local farm shop was rammed. They'd had queues since 7 am which was rather mad as they don't open until 9. I went in earlier than normal and wished I hadn't.

The Tesco social distancing measures are laughable.
They stuck strips black and yellow tape on the floor to keep people 2 metres behind the person in front.
The oversight being the fact you have to rub shoulders with the person in the next queue.

I have a slot booked on 29th march but if i can get things before then, i will cancel it and hopefully it will pop up for someone and help someone that day. i guess i shouldnt really book it at all as i am not self isolated. I thought about going to the shop today but given the schools announcement last night, i assume it would have ramped up again to panic stations as parents prepare. At the weekend i am going to try some asian/world supermarkets and see if i can get some different kind of bits in there.

I am over 70 so I decided to book an online delivery for next week as I am not sure what restrictions will be in for over the 70s by then. No slots at Sainsbury's but I got one at Tesco. I added just the items I needed but as it was under £40 I would have to pay a £4 minimum order charge so, reluctantly, I added a few items which I do not need yet, just to avoid the £4 extra.

Just had an email from the firm where I get my printer ink from saying that they have lots of supplies and can cope with the increased demand from all the extra home workers and schoolchildren. My first reaction was - I had not thought of that. My second reaction was - I had better order some ink before it all goes :)

Won't the home workers and school kids be sending in soft copies of their work via the internet, rather than printing it out?
If only to stop kids claiming the post office ate their homework?

Local news showing long queues of traffic to enter the supermarket car park, then long queues at the door
How are the elderly supposed to get to the front in time?

I had to do my monthly supermarket shop today (overdue by a week, so almost nothing left in my fridge or cupboard). There were huge gaps on the shelves where there should have been tinned goods like baked beans and soup. No chance of any rice or pasta (luckily I still have some left), the frozen food section was empty apart from the occasional lonely item (such as a lobster at £9!), so no chance of frozen chips, veg, fish, or anything like that. As for loo rolls, tissues and kitchen roll, not a single item left on the shelves!

I saw one woman grab a cardboard tray 2/3 full of tins of spam/luncheon meat and put it in her trolley. She heard me sigh loudly and said "Did you want some?". To which I replied "No, but someone else might!" - I doubt there was much conscience there to prick though! I would love to have seen her face when she got knocked back at the checkout and was only allowed 2 or 3 of those tins, as the Supermarket had put limits on quantities!

Once finished, I had a chat with the lady on the checkout till about what was going on. She confirmed that the spam-raider would have been unlucky as the tills would have detected and blocked any bulk buying! I said I'd waited until 8am before getting there as the first hour was for over 70s and vulnerable groups. She told me she thought that had been something of a farce, as some of the older people had apparently been accompanied by younger ones (presumably buying what they wanted too!), with a long queue there at opening time.

There's me telling my 80 year old mother she mustn't go shopping from now on in case she catches the virus, and I'd do her shopping for her instead. However, it appears some people might have taken an alternative approach, and been using their elderly relative/s as a 'front' so they could grab what was on the shelves before the shop was open to under 70s? If so, I think that's appallingly selfish behaviour. I suppose they'll be blaming everyone else (including the government) if their elderly relative catches the virus and dies, of course it could never be their own selfish fault, could it? Once again, however, I don't think there'd be much conscience there to prick if they're pulling tricks like that!

Sorted out a delivery slot for next Monday and managed to put most of what we needed in the basket ready for delivery. Checking the order today half the stuff is now out of stock! Surprising how quickly one can become stressed over what is going on, so much so that I think I'll just carry on and try to shop as normal. I'm 76 so something's going to get me in the not too distant future ;)

plenty of sprouts,Im ok then :D
Just like Christmas (y)
, it made me laugh when they substituted wifes daffodils for spring onions, wonder what they will look like in a vase
And the award for the most inventive substitution goes to ..... :D

A very good point,
everyone will be taking Granny shopping, Oh and grabbing a few bits while they are there.

Given the apparent selfishness of some people, I wouldn't be surprised if they started abducting them from care homes next, just so they can be first in the bloody Supermarket!

Many are on lock down.
My mum's included and I feel sorry for her TBH.
She got regular visits from either me or my brother pretty much daily, and a trip out at week-ends.
That's all stopped now :( I hope they have explained several times as to why, (her short term memory is terrible.)
And that she doesn't think she has been abandoned.

Does her room have an accessible window so you can see her through the glass and maybe talk on mobile?

My Dad is supposed to be staying in. He isn't. He has generally stopped visiting his geriatric friends. He doesn't plan ahead so food shopping must have been interesting this week. I have been telling him for ages he needs to be more organised. Hopefully having to do without a few things might focus his mind a bit!

My eighty year old mother in law is upset because the bingo is closed....

Unfortunately her room is at the back, 2nd floor, and at 95, she is pretty much deaf as a post, and her sight is not what it was either. Mobiles really are not really an option, we learned that a long time ago.
Assuming life is going on as "normal" inside, there are plenty of activities happening.
That's something I suppose...

Mrs Nod's Mum is 90 and lives on her own. Won't come to us (and we have stairs that would be a problem for her) and has no space for us. Got enough for a while but could be up Faeces Creek in a couple of weeks. Her cleaner can't now clean for her but is doing what shopping she can - fresh fruit and veg seems readily available at the moment. After the weekend, Mrs Nod will have more time to help but has been busy trying to organize the temporary shutdown of her business etc. and stay healthy herself so we can be more use!

This is a real shame, and I do sympathise with particularly small businesses of any types anything that involves people :(
