Over 70's to be asked to self-isolate - how will you pursue your hobby?

Re supermarket delivery slots. Some Tesco slots became available to approx 0500 this morning, so if you fancy getting up early it's worth checking very early now and again - keep refreshing browser.

We have tried to get a delivery slot for the wife's dad but every time we put his card details in it comes up with an "error" code after trying to verify via the bank, anyone else had that and found a way round it?

I found that when I tried Asda a few times - there were loads of slots but payment couldn't go through! No problem with Tesco.

It isn't possible to control every area. Our advice has been to tape play areas off, and photograph it to prove you have.

The world is full of idiots. I'm off on here to find a thread about the twitchers that today descended on Gloucestershire to photograph some kid of bird.
Did you find it ie the thread about twitchers in glos...curious I am.... if so pop me a link up please

many thanks

I don't see anyone at all Roger the joys of being a country boy living in a humble gaff 3 neibours, surrounded by fields. With so many so vunerable including my lady I don't want to do anything to create more problems than we already have Just wanted to check it was still in gov guidelines

Paul thanks for the add on,no canals no travel no driving no humans , just a walk around home.

cheers both

I thought that you wasn’t supposed to drive somewhere to take your exersize but they now specifically say that driving to a location away from home to take exercise is specifically prohibited

Still getting the occasional wildlife visit, our garden is on a fox route and we just had a visit.
It sat down on the lawn so I rushed upstairs to get the camera ... typical wildlife, gone before I got to the window. :(
Another day, another fox in the city. :tumbleweed:

Cameras exude a specific scent and emit a unique and inaudible (to humans) noise that any wildlife can smell or hear at 100 metres (longer lenses are louder...)

There's irony...... first thing I see (ok nearly trip over) is charlie fox lying up in some brambles he scared the livin' daylights out of me and me him just yards away. ,He bolted and went straight towards a roe buck and scared the life out of him ,funniest thing. One min all is quiet with the world next beasties going all ways

We used to see a fox very early morns cleaning up under the bird feeders. I don't feed fox...Maybe you can get an image of charlie soon for us mate seems like a worthy project for lock down hide in garden your just not going to get a goose aswell buddy;) As Nod says they have a sixth sense (ha maybe seventh) won't be easy, wildlife never is!! It's gotta be worth a pop though you have a handle on time of visit They oft repeat routes for a few days:)

Go get him Roger

Mate there is something about going out somewhere to "do" wildlife photography. it sort of makes it more special ,although I don't travel much my real hare spot I can't now justify or allow which is very hard especially right now this time of year. ,I'm sceaming quietly as we all are. But in all honesty I think we miss or rather don't really take advantage ie make the most of what is at home. I have a feeling this lock down will make a few of us think bloody hard so we can still play with our cameras !!

Hi stu, sorry, just seen this post, and I see gramps put up a link.

One week today since we last went out thanks to my step daughter.

Wild life in general may have a better year with parks etc not being so busy.

The first week has shown me how expensive its going to be, being retired we would shop a few times a week buying at different shops, one example is grapes my stepdaughter bought todays at Tesco £2 a tub we would buy at asda £1 a tub but we are just grateful someone is doing it for us

Similarly, we have always split our shop between Tesco & Aldi, cost is a bonus but some things in Aldi we prefer.
Like you we have family helping us with shopping but we don't want to put them at extra risk, so have been trying to shop online ... two weeks ago I managed to get an evening slot from Tesco, due to be delivered on 6th April, but since then it has been impossible to get another slot. Things we normally buy have had to take 2nd place to what is readily available, in order not to have them in the store longer than necessary.
As for cost, neither of us are using our cars and I'm not buying bacon butties anymore (sigh!) so it offsets any additional costs for different brands/sizes/options.

I heard that Iceland are making slots for OAP's, initially they said over 65's, so I thought I was "in", turns out you have to be receiving State Pension and as I don't get mine till next year (aged 66) I'm not "in" but you older guys might be. @gramps @mikew

Thanks but due to age and condition we dont go out, my stepdaughter is a team manager for an NHS group so she gets in on the early shopping etc

Home delivery slots.

well just had my new olympus 60mm macro delivered . so that should keep me going for a bit ,, got to take the wife down to Aldi in a bit to get some food in she doesn't drive ,fingers crossed . on the bright side most of my monthly spend is on diesel for the car so if this is long term I might even save a few bob . ....

Apparently, if we believe the Beeb "police and council officials" have been going into shops and telling them they can't sell easter eggs.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52090441

Apparently convenience stores are allowed to open but there's no definitive list of stuff they can sell although I'd assume if they're allowed to be open they're allowed to sell their usual stuff and this could possibly include chocolate eggs :D

If "police and council officials" have nothing better to do maybe they could contact their line management and be reassigned to something more useful than hassling newsagent staff over chocolate eggs?

I can't really say why but that Beeb article made me both laugh and rage just a bit too :D

Just checked and it's just an 'are you/aren't you a pensioner' selection ... unsurprisingly no slots available, will keep an eye out though :(

My wife said she tried yesterday and there seems to be some sort of check after that. Of course I failed as I'm only 65 :(

Hi stu, sorry, just seen this post, and I see gramps put up a link.
No worry's buddy but thanks so much for the comeback. This happened quite local to me hence my curiosity:)

thanks again

Strangely, for this thread, the call for over 70's to self isolate didn't actually come

I think the over-70 are more vulnerable, (of course Charles has just come out of self-isolation).
However the list of 'High Risk', needing to be shielded. has been changed as time has gone by.
There are still many classed as 'At Risk', who were initially in the 'High Risk' category.
Anyone in either category would be foolish not to take the matter seriously IMO.

Anyone in any category should take it seriously, this is not a game! We are basically on a war footing, the problem is we can't see the enemy, so the only answer is to avoid contact with anyone or anything outside the home, as they present a risk. Yes it's hard, yes it's inconvenient, and yes it's boring, but if everyone adhered to this mindset it can significantly reduce if not eliminate infection, and the sooner everyone grasps that, the sooner we can all get back to normal.

It is clear from reports that though the highest at risk are those older folk with underlying health issues.......but it is indiscriminate in who might get mild symptoms at one end of the scale and a fatal infection at the other end...across all age groups especially front line health care workers who are risk of exposure levels far in excess of that 'seen' by Joe Public.

We tried to reduce our exposure but doing online shopping .. ......but all supermarkets appear to have allocated all slots for weeks to come ~ we are currently geared up (as best we can) to need to go shopping, if we can manage it, no more than once every 10 days. We shall have to see if we can maintain that or maybe even longer intervals?

Well, unfortunately, our oven still doesn't work after fitting a new element so it's time to change it. It's dual fuel - can I install it legally myself? Quite competent in my own ability and I am very safety conscious. As far as I can see a 'qualified' person is only needed if a new circuit or gas line is fitted.

It needs to be connected by a gas safe registered installer.

The trouble is if everyone isolates (I know that's not likely) and we reduce the risk of infection in the UK to zero (again highly unlikely) then very few people will have any immunity consequently when re-infection starts all those people with no immunity will once again be at risk unless there's a vaccine. Bottom line is we need to get a mild dose and survive it or go to hospital (where the NHS isn't overwhelmed, hopefully) and survive that if no vaccine is available, what a dreadful choice.

When my Dad got a new gas cooker recently (couple of years back) he couldnt get hold of a flexible to connect the solid pipe to the cooker, his existing one didnt fit, so he had to get a GasSafe qualified person in.

Current cooker is dual fuel - might just get a cheapish electric cooker for the time being.
