The virus. PPE. Part 1

There’s always someone knows somebody who knows someone who lives in China.....

My wife worked there for a year, still has lots of friends there, but they're not representative of the masses as they taught in a private school. They're still very wary of what they talk about as well, the updates they've given her so far have started with "the news says.."

The law is pretty clear (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/350/regulation/6/made) but certainly doesn't go as far as what some Police forces up and down the country have been tweeting or trying to enforce in a 'Stasi' like fashion.

One example I just couldn't believe https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52090441

My daughter in law who work in social services, went through a police check area, when she was going over a bridge to work. She did not get stopped but was waived through. The police posted on FB saying "if you are out driving, you may be stopped and you will have to explain why you are on the road". But apparently they have NO power to do so.

Just watching it on the news now. Some will say the police should be stopping motorist, but the government says the police where not told to do this. I am all for obeying the law, so long as everyone follows the law.

I find it amazing on another post an Italian or maybe Spanish policeman is seen kicking the legs from under some idiot and everyone’s in agreement that’s the way to treat them and yet its unfair that they are stopping people driving and asking them why,
it’s a bloody police state :ROFLMAO:

Reminds me of the six degrees of separation!

Although I have noticed one or two members quite often seem to have either worked in, have a family member, a neighbour or a friend involved or associated with whatever subject is being discussed. Seems a little too convenient sometimes.

I feel left out, I don't know anyone who lives in China, or knows anyone who lives in China. :(
Same goes with the virus, one workmate had to self isolate because his daughter may have had it, but that's it.

Been out for my morning exercise, and only met three people at a distance. Hard to hold your breath, while walking up a hill. One of the people was a cyclist, when he got to the top of the hill, he did a filthy spit on the floor. Why do people feel the need to spit on the floor? I made sure I walked a good twenty feet from where he had spit.

My son spent two years out there, mainly in South Eastern China, in two stints as an ESL teacher. he loved it, the people and the culture, they were all very respectful and friendly. He doesn't have contact with many if any Chinese, as its generally quite difficult, most don't have a VPN so can't view any of our social media platforms, they have their own. His best friend out there, they met on the plane over first time, married a Chinese lass, and is still there.

I have no problem with the police stopping cars etc. There is still a lot of crime going on. We have had a few break ins around the area recently, cars, tools and dogs being stolen.

Yeah my wife's friends must have a VPN as they're on facebook. Well, on and off as the VPN gets shut down haha. Obviously wealthy by chinese standards as one of the teachers came to visit us the other year, she was amazed when we drove out to the in-laws as there was loads of rabbits hopping about on the side of the road, she wanted to know why we were letting food wander about...

Heard some info from inside my local hospital. This has come from an audiologist friend of mine who is now working on the wards directly with Covid-19 patients. So if there is any question about sourcing additional staff to work on the front line from less critical areas, it appears that ship has already sailed.

As of yesterday, the numbers currently admitted...

~180 potential Covid-19 patients awaiting test results.
20 confirmed cases
Of which 6 are in ICU. One is the father of a family friend.

Really quite sobering. Especially when considering that for these numbers to go down, it does not mean everyone gets better. There have been 2 deaths reported locally that I have seen so far. :(

Even a globe will balance on the back of four elephants.
.
My opinion is yes, we will see a different world when this is over but when that will be is anyone’s guess. It’s not off the table that there could be a second wave out of China or more likely Italy or Spain if we can believe that the Chinese have seen the last of of it but to be fair officials are watching very closely as the Provences get back to work.

I don’t think we’ll come out of this unscathed though regarding the fear and trauma experienced. I’m thinking of the psychological effects of self-isolation and when people go out the 2m rule at supermarkets mainly and the fear of touching a contaminated surface. There those who’ve had to cope with spouses and/or family members die alone. The effects on front line medical staff. On top of that there’s the obvious economic factors. I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose your income so suddenly through job loss albeit HMG are paying out 80% of wages with a ceiling re earnings..£2500 a month I think. I’m not sure how the self-employed will fare but many businesses will go to the wall. Even now incidents of domestic abuse are rising sharply as families are confined to small places. We don’t all have plenty of house room and decent-sized gardens and pleasant locations to take the government-sanctioned walks in. It must be awful living in a tower block.

The economic fall out is going to be severe. 10 years of austerity ending then this comes along with the Treasury borrowing massive sums. It’s a case of ‘as you were’.

On the bright side look at the co-operation with industry in making oxygen delivery equipment. for patients Mercedes Formula One team and JCB and Dyson. We certainly have very clever engineers. I’m hoping that we can all reconnect with each-other after this from the hitherto ‘’me-me-me society and the isolationist position taken by so many countries...Trump comes to mind and appreciate that international co-operation as experienced with China..eventually, after the initial outbreak could not be kept out of the public domain leads to a better world. Wishful thinking..?..probably.

There was talk that the Chinese leadership were going to stop these wet markets from operating..they have done it before but not properly and they re-appeared . There is hope that they will also stop the consumption of wild and endangered species including the so-called traditional medicine trade in such creatures and tackle hygiene conditions too but I despaired when I heard today that consuming bear bile is a cure for COVID-19.

I really hope that those reading this will open these links.

Five Live,Emma Barnet is taking taking calls on this now. 10-12pm..I don’t. mean stop checks for crime-related issues but breaking the lockdown rules. Other issues are being discussed so it’s a matter of as and when calls come in.

Since this is a photo forum, here's a photo - making enzyme conjugates to CoV-19 spike 1 protein. At this stage I've just added a cross linker to the protein, and removed the unbound linker by chromatography. The next stage is mixing with enzyme and letting it couple overnight.

It's just cookery really - the clever bit was done by the guys who worked out the original process. [emoji846]View attachment 273538
Ah, chromatography! I used to do that in the late 1950s but it looked like this (though on a smaller scale, with a rotary fraction collector with hundreds of glass vials):

I expect it’s still the same (NOT) :)

In the fullness of time we may get a more accurate assessment of casualties. It is far from satisfactory that the truth is not being told.
There were voices in the media today suggesting that the casualties of coronavirus were not bad enough to justify the damage to our economy brought about the lockdown.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/11282...-economy-and-will-kill-more-than-coronavirus/
Any down playing of the casualty rate dangerously undermines the efforts being to bring Covid 19 under control.
It’s Murdoch, he’s peddling the same line in US, where he has the ear of Trump :(.

That was a sobering read,Richard. Unless you’re on top of what’s going on,as journalists are, the last paragraphs would be news to most, including myself. I now conclude that it will be used for malign purposes. I see good old Jehovah Witnesses got a mention at the end too. The end of the world is nigh..for the 8th time. Infact ‘right nigh’ ...(now ..posh speak..Two Ronnies lol) Their last prediction..(JW not the two Ronnies) was in 1984 when all would end before the 20th century was over but hey..we’re still here. Hope I can get away with this wee snippet re religion. :)

I have a cousin-in-law (is that a thing?) currently living/teaching in Hong Kong (not Chinese though, Scottish but that’s nearly the same :)) and my brother spent a lot of time in China, when they had just opened up, producing software for some medical purposes (no idea what, he’s a systems analysis person).
Since this is a photo forum, my Minox 35 (still working) travelled to China on one of the early trans-Siberian tourist trains when they started becoming popular/possible around 1970ish and spent some time there (on loan to someone working as a tourist guide etc).

Years ago, when they first opened up, my brother described driving into a rural small town/village and found a large group with guns surrounding a tree, when he investigated he found the object of their attention was a small bird in the tree :).
But, remember they have suffered bad famines within quite recent memory which possibly colours their view,

My point was that if traffic is being stopped for breaking lockdown rules, there is every chance the crooks will be pulled over to explain where they are going.
At the moment the crooks are taking advantage of the fact that whilst some people are at work, few people are out on the streets to notice a house being broken into or a car stolen.

I’ve always felt it would be good move to take away driving licences of certain/many convicted criminals, wouldn’t stop them driving (crooks will do ...)bBut at least they would be committing an offence when stopped.

Yes.. I appreciate what you were highlighting which is true. (y)

I spent a couple of days in an ICU bed and had twice daily visits from a Physiotherapist to keep me moving and breathing to reduce the chances of a pneumonia.
Odd that when I suggested that nurses, redundant from other areas, could be used to turn COVID19 patients to help with breathing as seen in Italy, that Donnie practically dismissed the idea as he hadn't seen the video, but the second I provide evidence of it physiotherapists doing just that in the UK, it's a case of,
" That is standard practice."

I used to have a Chinese GF and although she took no interest in eating the wildlife the groups of Chinese officials she shepherded about various UK educational facilities and tourist spots eyed up everything from pigeons to squirrels and these were government and education professional types, people I'd assume were the Chinese middle classes. Her explanation was that in China people eat everything.

More a case of if they get stopped. They only have to clone number plates and as far as ANPR is concerned, the car and driver is legit. It's only if they are seen doing something wrong or suspicious that they are likely to then be stopped.

I can't understand the delay in approving ventilators.

I wasn't involved in medical devices so there may be differences and time consuming issues but the approval processes I was involved in were straight forward and quick. I did electro mechanical stuff. Surely arms could be twisted to get on with this. I'd love to know what the hold up is.

There's a lot of it going about at the moment, everyone seems to be related or know, someone Chinese, someone who's a virologist someone etc etc etc.

If it's a new design, I imagine is pretty much obvious. It's pointless putting someone on a ventilator that hasn't been shown to be effective and work as it should.

I keep looking on Ford's intranet site for updates of what is happening at work, on there, they state the consortium of companies that are reverse engineering existing ventilators as well as designed a new ventilator, have had help from the regulating ( no pun intended ) body every step of the way. They expect their ventilators to be signed off and in production this week.
Ford have also collaborated with GKN in America to build ventilators and other medical equipment, they expect to have supplied 100k ventilators by July and to be able to continuing to produce 30k a month there after.

For medical stuff I can imagine that there's some sort of desk based design review and some testing but surely this could be done quickly.

I'd expect any decent company to have people who could make sure the various things needed were there to achieve whatever certification is needed. The stuff I was involved with only needed outside people for some of the testing and every single time that was accomplished (and passed) in one day.

I did see a lack of knowledge as often companies with good skills in one area may know nothing about other areas, for example someone might design a circuit but have no idea about circuit board technology, connectors or mechanical considerations but I'd expect these big international and technical companies to have people who can get a grip on things and keep the technical people and the product on the right track.

I'd just love to know what the hold up has been.

They’ll get stopped because they will be driving too fast or some other ‘minor’ infringement or changing direction when they see a police car or recognised by police. They just can’t help themselves, mostly, by keeping within the law on antything.

Here is something for anyone finding it difficult to get out to do some exercise just now -

Thanks for posting this video,Dave. :) I’ve just tried it and I’m now waiting for an ambulance to get me to the hospital as I‘ve done my back in. I’ll probably get COVID-19 now. :D

It’s the ‘anyone’ that needs to be amended...How about.....if anyone, who feels they are able to‘..etc...:D

The police posted on FB saying "if you are out driving, you may be stopped and you will have to explain why you are on the road". But apparently they have NO power to do so.

The police, AFAIK, already have the power to stop any motorist at any time with or without giving a reason.
Furthermore theyre entitl;ed to take action in accordance with the current regs, as per the following https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/350/regulation/8/made

I use chromatography every working day.
The system I'm working on currently only uses 0.1 microliters per injection & 98% of that is dumped at injection. Somewhat different to the illustration. Some of our other methods use even smaller sample sizes o_O
Not surprisingly the instruments look very different too, our widest columns are 4.6mm id, going down to 0.1mm id.

I'm the one always on the receiving end, not the instigator, but now I'm not allowed not to defend myself.
Thanks for your kind consideration.
