Female Banded Mosquito, Culiseta annulata (used to be called Theobaldia annulata) sitting on a lily pad in my garden pond. This is the largest British species in the Culicidae and was taken at 1:1. It is quite an enthusiastic man-biter! The banded legs and spotty wings are very characteristic.

Here is a crop from a closer shot, taken at 3:1, showing the business end - the probocis. It shows nicely that the markings are actually made up from areas of flattened hairs akin to the scales of Lepidoptera. Lovelly beast!
