The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Do ‘we’ think Sigma will eventually bring out ‘dedicated’ FE mount Art primes rather than DSLR ones ‘adapted’ to fit?

Good luck trying to consistently apply that process to 1,000+ images in the time you need to deliver them, its cheaper to buy the lens and do it properly. Why would you fake it?!

All your points have been posted by many over the years. When the user/client demands the best they will pay for the best.
For sure it won’t work for everyone in all circumstances .... and not everyone is a Pro delivering 1000’s of images to a deadline :p

Fair enough. Ditch your high end gear and get a entry level dslr and kit lens or use your phone.

Agreed, but would they notice the difference between 1.2 and 1.4/1.8?

There is a huge difference between a lens like a Canon 85mm 1.8 and a sigma art 85 1.4. It's not just the 0.4. If they don't notice, I do and that also matters.

Am I the only one who is quite content with what they've got?

Image quality wise I'm happy enough with the A7.

I nit pick the lenses, cats eye bokeh with some like the 85mm f1.8 a teeny bit of ca with other Sony primes, the character of the fall off at various apertures. I'm sure we all nit pick to an extent even if we're mostly happy.

I don't really know what to do next with my little hobby. I'm not getting the time and opportunity to go out for long walks with the kit so I wonder if there's any point in buying a long lens or a nice manual prime but on the other hand I can afford it and it gives me something to look forward to when and if I do get the opportunity to go out and take pictures.

Probably ;) I’d like a second body (preferably A9-II) to save swapping lenses whilst out and about, a 70-180mm f2.8, 16-35mm f4 and 50mm f1.4 (or faster), then I’ll be happy

A7, CV40 1.2E, CV21 3.5E, FE85, Contax Carl Zeiss 80-200T* and Samyang 24 1.4 for Milky Way.....

Yeah. I'm okay.

Part of me wouldn't mind trading both the CV21 & S24/1.4 for either the 20G/24GM but that's just a mild thought at the moment.

As I have an A7R iii which in itself is way more camera than I will ever feasibly need i am content. Always happy to be trying and swapping lenses !

The only reason to swap my camera is GAS - which experience has showed me I can't rule out....

I think quite a few Sony users will be tempted by the new Canon offerings though.

Im very happy with my gear but would like an a9mkIII with around 35 mp and a little faster start up time .

Rob.

Just need to make my mind up on which longer lens to add. Sigma 100-400 or Tamron 70-180. Once that decision is made I'll be happy for a while.

It's my Birthday today though so if you all want to have a whip round and just buy one or the other or both for me to save me deciding that would be great. :D

I think as normal there will be a few who just chase the newest kit and will change systems.
The thread might get abit quieter soon.

For me I’m happy enough and financially it would make no sense loosing money on what I have.bar video it might not be a massive improvement( I’m sure Sony will match or beat it so enough).

The cost of the canon stuff, regardless off how good is ridiculous.

I couldn't care less about the new Canon bodies to be honest the Sony bodies I have are excellent.

But if I decide to get the Canon 50 f/1.2 I will need a body to put it on. :ROFLMAO:

If Sony had a 50 f/1.2 I would have bought it already.

I found myself looking at ordering an A7iii and then an A7Riii and at that point, well its only a few hundred more for a grey A7Riv. I even had myself convinced that I would cancel a few other things to avoid a stern talking to when the A7Riv turned up, but to be honest its all pie in the sky. I think the GAS syndrome has got worse due to lockdown as people can't really let off steam in the usual ways and are possibly looking to buy something to avoid boredom.

OK numpty question of the day, do ND filters affect AF systems more than low light conditions? I know from past experience that cameras have struggled when I've used a big stopper that they've struggled with AF, but I'm wondering if using a 4 or 5 stop ND filter on a bright sunny day would be any worse than shooting without a filter in dull conditions?

I would expect that whatever way you reduce the amount of light that gets to the sensor would affect the AF in the same way. No empirical evidence to support that but it seems logical!

The last time I used ND regularly it was to bring the shutter speed down below 1/4000 when taking pictures with wide apertures.

If this is holding you up I could give it a try tomorrow, assuming the light is reasonable.

Let me know if you want me to mount some ND's and report back.

Thanks. my thoughts are the same, diminished light is diminished light regardless of whether it’s filter or just poor light but you never know.

Woof woof that’d be great if you could, looking at getting a 4-6 stop for the 85mm f1.8 to bring shutter speed down for panning shots.

Hi all,
Had a weird situation today on the new A6400... I took 7 photos of the local air ambulance landing. Based on the camera's default naming convention, the first one is in the correct order, but the next 6 are back to front. i.e. photo 2 is when the chopper is closest to the ground, working back to photo 7 which should be number 2!
Anyone know what causes this? Is it a setting or a glitch?
Thanks.

Been looking more seriously at the Tammy 70-180mm and just realised there’s no switches on it, so no focus limiter and no AF/MF switch :( I know you can assign these to Fn buttons on the camera but I don’t, and I like the way the camera is set up now. I wonder why they left these out? I guess cost but as £1349 I’d have expected them tbh.

Yes lack of buttons and knobs is a bit annoying. But it has you favourite zoom lock though ;)

Actually there's plenty of space in fn menu and custom buttons to assign these things. Wasn't a deal breaker for me since not all my lenses (and by looks of it not all your lenses) have these switches anyway. So I need to have AF/MF toggle and APS-C crop mode toggle setup anyway.

I did wonder about the focus limiter... So far the AF is quick and snappy that I haven't missed it. I guess the larger 70-200GM has many large elements that's requires moving and hence benefits more from focus limiter. I have no idea why Sony in they their infinite wisdom have decided to omit the in-body focus limiter they have in their a-mount bodies.
If it does become an issue I'll be selling my lens. So far so good.

I thought the camera had focus limiter, must be confusing it with the Nikon, very odd and annoying omission. Hmmm, that could be a deal breaker for me :(:dummy:One of the main uses for me is motorsport and with today's health and safety you're mainly shooting through catch fencing.

No idea.

The only numbering issue I've had is when it reaches the end and starts again so pictures I took recently appear before pictures I took a while back when pictures are ordered by name.

Is there an option in the menu relating to how files are named? If there is could it have been altered or just altered itself? Maybe it's worth a few minutes wading through the menu just to make sure something like that hasn't happened.

Just reporting back on ND's. With the 85mm f1.8 and an ND8 and ND4 fitted focusing was fine wide open to f8, not noticeably too slow and fine for non action anyway on my creaking old A7.

I'd almost forgotten what a nice lens that 85mm f1.8 is, I must try and use it more.
