Good Evening all,

I have joined this forum mainly for my daughter, she is about to turn 16. Although I may be biased as I am her Mum, she does have a natural eye with the camera.

She is on the Autistic Spectrum with ADHD, dyslexia and dyscalculia, and we have home educated her for around 8 years as school just was not suitable for her.

She was very artistic from a very young age, and with the time away from school, her love for photography began.

We eventually found an amazing photography tutor, who also home educates, and they have spent the last nearly 3 years exploring!

She has held 2 exhibitions of her work, the first was a very quiet one to ease her in, and the second was a part of a big exhibition.

She is starting a Level 2 photography course in September at the local college and is really looking forward to starting.

The main reason I have joined is because I am the one who buys all the equipment, and I like to do as much research as I can possibly get, she uses my Nikon D3200, but I have now saved up enough money to get the Canon 90D, and a few lenses.

I hope to glean some great info from you all!

Hope I am welcome!

Thats pretty good to read..

Just a note.. has she tried the canon yet? It's bigger than the nikon and heavier.... may or may not be a factor ?

Hi and welcome to TP

From what you say I am sure she will enjoy the course and thrive through what I hope will be a nurturing and encouraging learning experience.

One quick question and sorry if I state the obvious? From a few similar posts I have seen here at TP re: "son or daughter going to college and I am going to buy camera X". A few responders mentioned that (some?) colleges have a kit list of what they recommend to buy?

All the best to both of you and her learning and growing success in exhibiting.

I know, we are extremely lucky, photography tutors are difficult to find in the home ed community!
Yes her tutor uses a Canon, amongst others, but she likes his.

Thankyou! The college uses the Nikon D3200, which she already has. We will be buying her the camera for her to use outside of college, which she will do, as she's either attached to the hip with the camera or attached to photoshop editing her work. I just thought it would be nice, to get her a new one, as she works extremely hard and to be honest, she's raised quite a bit of money from selling her pictures, which went in the "new camera pot" :)

Hi Lisa, welcome to the forum :welcome:

Sounds to me that your daughter is of to a fine start with you helping and the tutor, I wish you both lots of luck (y)

welcome to TP- If I can be of any help, just drop me a PM - I shoot Sony ( mirrorless) that maybe an avenue you should consider

I'm mainly a wildlife Photographer - but I do shoot the occasional Wedding and Portraits

Hi Lisa, And welcome aboard TP, looking forward to hearing from you. "Enjoy".

Obviously you know what you need but lenses tend to be a major part of the expense of photography and Nikon and Canon lenses don't mix, so having Canon and Nikon bodies is going to increase costs.

Welcome,

I would just like to add, that if you are looking at a new system, have you considered the mirrorless options? Both Nikon & Canon have models, full frame & APSC, as well as others such as Sony & Fuji.

If I were starting from scratch, I would look at the mirrorless bodies, it's where the development is going.

Oh the lenses! I must have spent weeks, scratch that, probably months researching the lenses, and I now have a spreadsheet with them on, with the prices so I can hopefully get the best deal.
Im going to try and get the full frame prime lenses where I can, as I do know they work on the crop sensors, and I know in the future at some point, she would probably go to a full frame, and lenses are an investment, that can last a lot longer than the camera.

I did look at the mirrorless ones for a good while, but Cody and her tutor discussed it, and she decided against it, she does have a mirrorless camera, it's a Samsung NX300, and she prefers the bulk size of the DSLR.

You have so many stunning images  I couldn't choose a favourite!

I don't think my daughter would have the patience to shoot wildlife, she can't sit still, I hope college don't ask her to do it, as she'd scare the birds away!

My daughter shoots a lot of portraits, and she's taken images for L'oreal competitions too, here is her website, she did it all herself, ready for college, so there isn't much of her work on there https://www.cjmurrayphotography.co.uk

I'm hoping with her starting college soon, she may get the confidence to take more photo's. She is always being asked to shoot for people, family pictures, baby pictures, she always says no, as she doesn't feel comfortable having to direct and talk to that many people. That's an Autism thing, and she can get quite overwhelmed, but she is still young

I also shoot Weddings/ Engagements and Portraits in my studio or on location which I prefer to artificial light - so any help I can give, I will :) best advice I could give her, is DO IT

Hi Lisa

I'll be honest I seldom come into this section but I seen North England in the title.

So happy I did.

Your post is a good read I hope your Daughter as a great time during her course. I'm sure she will shine. I just took a look at her site. It looks great. I really enjoyed the blog page. Made me think about photography, sounds odd that doesnt it ? Probably what I mean is I know very little about what went before and take photos of what I think will look good.

The sequence photos really did make me think.

Great that your in Manchester too.

All the best folk are :)

Best of luck.
