The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

So Batis 25 on its way to its new owner and the 16-35 F4 has been ordered from Panamoz, so tempted to get the GM, but I decided to be sensible, anything under 45mm is wide for me so lets see how I get on when it arrives. Might be seeking a few tips on composition :)

I can picture a year ago when Sony announced/showcase animal eye-AF and the world was going Wowwwwww, the Canon engineers must have had a little giggle amongst themselves.
Or perhaps they realised they needed to put in a lot of overtime to match / beat Sony in the months ahead.
They certainly would have had some form of eye AF in development, but without Sony pushing the boundaries I doubt Canon would have worked as hard to get their version to the standard it appears to be.
Sony, in the meantime, will have been working on improvements themselves.

Healthy competition is good for us, when it forces innovation.

So it has great Eye AF.

But surely one of the main points of the Sony is black out free silent fast shooting - ideal for birds and being ultra stealthy - I may have read it wrong, but these new Canons can’t do that?

I think it can, PM video showed the white box just blinking when it was shooting.

@woof woof , might as well call this the Canon thread now as seems some fanboys have arrived.

We've seen it all in here Tom. If you feel people aren't posting here in the best spirit and are instead tending towards a bit of a wind up then just don't feed them. If they carry on with no one feeding them someone will eventually ask the mods to do a tidy up.

I've read enough Canon stuff in this thread, surely owners can find people to talk to in the Canon thread without posting so often in here.

Didn't think it could, otherwise they'd have marketed the hell out of it like Sony did.
I agree, there's no mention of it in the marketing or specs so I can only assume it doesn't have it. Certainly a nicer looking camera than Sony though ;)

If the new A7s does have the rumoured fully adjustable screen would that be something to temp still shooters?

Not for me, 12mp rules it out straight away.

not going to lie, super tempted by R5. even though I cannot afford it for most part lol.
If tamron (and sigma) jump in with 3rd party support I'd be all over it! I can already replace my samyang 85mm/1.4 like for like.

Shhh, you're not allowed to talk about canon

I'm sure you're always welcome here Twist, especially as you'll be a bit lonely restricting yourself to the Canon thread as there hasn't been a post in there for how long?

If there isn't much to talk about in Canon FF land maybe when the A7s comes out some Sony users could head on over to share some specs and comparisons and leave this thread to rest a bit so we don't get any overheating issues :D

I was thinking about this recently. I was at the time happy with my 8mp Canon 20D and later also with the 12mp 5D. So, I suppose I could get used to 12mp again if something about a 12mp camera really grabbed me. I can't think what cold grab me, a price of £500 maybe? :D

Looks nice and whilst I’m drawn like a magpie to shiny new things I have no real interest in the R5 as 45mp isn’t enough for my extreme cropping to save buying a heavy wildlife lens, theres no equivalent to the 16-35mm f4, 24-70mm f4, 100-400mm and no 50 or 85mm f1.8 primes. And then the 70-200mm is £2.6k. Apart from that it’s the perfect system for me

I like it here, all my friends are here and I get to wind you up. Na, don't think anybody wants a camera with a megapixel count from the stone age :D

Twist, I've known you how long now? I've seen how both helpful and disruptive you've been in turn at times in this thread and I've seen the fun and the devilment in you and my days of being wound up by you are well and truly over long time back so don't even give that a thought. You'll only be wasting your own time and making yourself look a little silly if you try :D

Weve come a long way haven't we woofy. You're no fun in your old age. I'll always have the sweet sweet memories.

I do but I keep the end use in mind. Most of the time my pictures are for screen viewing and electronic transfer 1500-2k wide so the only real impact on me could be when doing heavy crops of flowers and the like but I did that sort of thing with the Canon DSLR's and don't remember tearing my hair out so maybe I would be ok.

I do have A3 prints from my 20D but not heavily cropped ones. I may try cropping a few 20D/5D pictures to see how far I can go for my own needs, just for fun :D

This may be a camera more for the vid guys though.

I'm just more tolerant of those who are basically strangers to me who don't seem to be able to play nice on the internet now. Possibly because I don't live on line, partly because I've grown up and grown bored of internet spats and being married now helps a lot too :D

It's all fun, people can have disagreements, we're only human (mostly) it's only the internet, not the end of the world.

I had a 20D for 10 years and it was awesome but the jump I made to the 6D was even more awesome :runaway:

So basically what you are saying is that your missus doesn’t allow you any more? :ROFLMAO:

Thinking about the SIII, I could probably live with 12MP for everything except landscape/architectural work, though I'd probably find the slightly gritty images a little irritating. But it's very much a camera for a specific set of uses, so comparing it with an all-rounder may be a little perverse.

Why would they be gritty?

It's funny because I have it in my head that 12MP is an unusably low resolution nowadays but when I've had the A7S2 out on its own and used it for photo and video I've been surprised at how good the 12mp output has been. When looking through older photos there's times I've been looking at what I thought was a 24MP shot from a D750 but was actually from the 12MP D700. That said I wasn't fussed about the 12MP on the A7S2 as I chose it for video and that's what it mostly does while being accompanied by another camera for stills but it's still more than capable of great stills.

Canon R5 is look rather tasty .... come on Sony... time to bring out a global shutter A9 :D

12mp is more than useable, even for large-ish printing. I've got a 55" 4K TV and photos look great on there, and 4K TVs are 'only' 8.5mp. IMO high MP cameras are only really useful if you crop heavily, or want to print a billboard size picture at 300dpi for some reason (bit of an exaggeration but you get my drift ;))

Marketing and forums make you believe that 24mp is that absolute bear minimum you need these days, when for most people 12mp is more than enough.
