The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

The obsessive geek in me couldn't live with that camera unless I could get the Sony logo the right way up. If that's not possible the whole design team should be executed. Immediately. Either that or make the Sony logo spinnable so you can spin it the right way round.

Hi i forgot ot ask you.

have you finally upgraded your sony A7 mk1?

yeah sorry should have stated i'll be hiking, so need something reasonably comfortable with all the gear in.
im thinking, Ultra wide, 35mm or 50mm ish. 70-200. drone. horrible tripod on the back or side.

I still have the A7, no real pressing reason to change really.

I've had the MKIII in my basket a few times but the fact is it's just gas and the A7 does everything I need apart from the focus is a bit leisurely for people shots and it doesn't shoot silently. I have MFT for when I need fast AF or a silent camera though.

The big issue is time as it's getting harder to get out to take pictures at all these days. For months now the furthest I've gone is a walk to the shops or a trip to the seaside which is about 20 minutes drive away, an hour or so there and I have to get back so really spending a lot on gear would be daft as most of the time I'm tied to the house (like now) as I look after someone who really can't be left alone for any length of time now.

might consider selling my f-stop kenti if that floats your boat. It can fit all those things.

This is how my Backlight 26L is packed when I do a hike with similar gear ie 70-200 f4, 16-35 2.8, 24-105, Mavic 2 pro, Osmo Action etc.

Tripos can go on the sides or front and there room in the front for some light clothing etc,

yea i have shoot less and less due to lockdown and covid.

I use my camera as a web cam now LOL

The rumour site says it will post some details on the other new camera that is coming after the A7SIII announcement it is likely to be a completely new entry level full frame based on what they said previously. They are also going to post some details on a new Sigma lens that is coming, likely to be a 70-200 f/2.8.

if there 70-200 is smaller and lighter then the GM i may cop that badboy.

The seconds being added would be really useful to me.

When we are heading out to a wedding we need to sync all 6 bodies to the exact same time. You can sort of get around it by using the app but its a pain, it would be much better if you could just set them all using the camera's clock.

Even better would be an option to automatically sync the clocks - imagine if you could just set both cameras to clock sync mode, then bring them close to NFC pair and sync.
6 Bodies, just auto sync to the one primary, job done in under a minute :)

Just write down the time on a bit of paper then go and find the cameras and update them :D

firstly I have 0 experience in video but came across this and wondered is Sony using the same codec as canon?

seems the codec they use on the R5 is a b*tch for editing, killed at 15k Mac Pro  something to do with current CPU/GPU not being able to properly decode it.

even Tony commented saying it took 8h to render 20min of 4k footage.

would help if I added the link.

SAR says: "Meantime I am working on the next rumor about the new Sigma FE fast prime lens ;)"

Here's to hoping it's a 85mm f1.2.

Obviously pancake size :p

That would be perfect (y)

It takes about 5-10 seconds to do each one so by the time you get to the last one you are maybe a minute out, which makes the timeline in lightroom a pain.

At the moment I just connect each to the app and let it sync, but is a pain as the app is completely crap and often doesn't connect or messes about.

 :$ Ooh interesting

Maybe it will be a 50 1.2 and I won't need to jump ship just for the one lens.

If it's an 85 f/1.2 you are gonna need a wheel barrow to carry it around.

Yup! t'was but a silly.

I remember as a child watching a show with a guy who had hundreds of clocks around the house, he set them all to 12:00 o clock (or something) and by the time he had finished they were all out!

He was later bought a watch so he could set them against it :)

Yeah he was slightly out of line, but lets be honest it wasn't really that bad and others here have said and done worse. Did it annoy you that much to go crying to the mods about it, demanding he be banned? Tony's shutter had just died on his camera while he was in the middle of a wedding as well so I imagine he was in quite bad form, we all have our off days. That other guy knew exactly what he was doing and purposely tried to wind him up and got what he wanted. Also the first time Tony had a temp ban it was after an interaction with the same fella.

you know, we really, really don't hand out permanent bans willy-nilly (or willy nelson, or any other prick)... If your mate realised who it was that he'd been interacting with that had caused him to get a temporary ban, maybe the brighter way to deal with things would have been to simply ignore them (either by just not reading whatever they say, OR by using the facilities provided by the forum to ignore specific people. It's a slightly depressing thing to realise, over 11 and a bit years on here, and probably 9 years on the staff, but there are people who just DO press other peoples buttons - either out of malice, or simply because they're just attuned to a different wavelength to the people they irritate, and they perhaps don't realise they're grinding others gears. Inevitably, the irritated person "snaps" and ends up getting a short forum holiday, where the person who irritated them hasn't specifically said or done anything that is against the rules...

Normally, in a case like this, if I've handed out a ban, I'll drop a short PM to the person banned, and explain that we kind of understand what happened, but have to act on what they'd said/done - and I recommend use of the ignore button. Now, this isn't a specific policy of the staff/organisation, just something I do, because, frankly, I hate banning people from here - I want to encourage people to be around this forum, not send them away to bitch and moan about the forum on social media. (oh, yes, so so often thats the first point of call...)

I guess what i'm saying is, while it feels better to "fight your corner, and not go running to the teachers" if someone's getting on your tits, if you do, you have to be prepared for possible repercussions... It's often easier to report them, then stick them on ignore - if they truly are just trolling, and everyone reports them, then the evidence begins to stack up against them, and will one day reach critical mass. However, if everyone in the thread has them on ignore anyway, and nobody bites, they'll fade away naturally...

The current A7sii Sony 4K bitrate is 100mbps, Canon 4K bitrates as follows.

4K (119.9p / 100p): Approx. 1880 Mbps
4K (59.94p/50.00p): ALL-I Approx. 940 Mbps
4K (59.94p/50.00p): IPB Approx. 230 Mbps
4K (29.97p/25.00p/24.00p/23.98p): ALL-I Approx. 470 Mbps
4K (29.97p/25.00p/24.00p/23.98p): IPB Approx. 120 Mbps
8k Raw (29.97p/25.00p/24.00p/23.98p): Approx. 2600 Mbps

So it really depends if they are comparing ALL I or IPB.

are they still using that daft mpeg codec that has huge size files?

i think it was the 5d4 that first used such stupid codec on its 4k recording....

It's only a minor annoyance but it seems such an easy thing for them to fix by adding seconds to the clock like every other manufacturer.

I could set each one by my watch/clock/phone etc. but over 6 bodies it's a bit of a pain and even if they are only a second or two out once finished it's still a minor annoyance.

Yeah, I totally get what you are saying.

I guess just because I know the guy who was banned from real life and I know his personality better I could see what was going to happen. He shouldn't have took the bait, but was having a particularly bad day. The mods gotta deal with what is reported to them, so no fault there. Just one of those things.

Mmm I’m really not sure as I said I have no idea with video. Not actually sure if it is the codec/bitrate or format that’s the issue, maybe you would understand better.
I know they were going on about the 10bit HEVC 4:2:2 codec being an issue and I have no idea what Sony uses or plans to use.
Is the bit rate linked to the codec?

The 8k raw seemed to play back and render fine.

Can you record a quick 5min 8k high quality for us and upload to somewhere. I wanna see how the this cpu can handle it

On the A6000, am I right in thinking that you cannot display the histogram whilst giving exposure compensation? Or is there a setting I've missed? So far, with the histogram in the viewfinder, as I adjust the +/- compensation the histogram does a runner.

Liking the new screen

I hope if it exists, it focuses faster than the first generation Canon 1.2L did - had it back in the day of shooting film, and moving those massive lens elements around was possibly a tad beyond the subminiature AF motors of that era... You really had to learn to use it and dial in your reaction times a little... but when you got it right, there was not a lot that could touch it. The v II version was a fair bit better in fairness, but by that time I was shooting digital and a lot less of fast moving objects in dingy pits of bars and concert halls, so it wasn't really worth the £££'s

It is possible to have the histogram showing while adjusting exposure compensation on the A6000 (I've just tested with mine) - the problem is there is so much customisation even on an entry level camera like this, that it's probably something to do with a combination of settings.

I was in AP mode, and have the dial on the back set for exposure compensation.
Press the Display button so the histogram is visible in the EVF, then adjust the back dial and I can see the exposure compensation and the histogram changing together.

Ah thanks - I shall have to have a play (just got the thing).

Mmm 100mm f/1.4 GM coming, not for me this one I think any takers?
