So I am thinking it is time to get some cloud back up for my photos after a minor loss of data at the weekend [in which I didn't follow my own routine]. Crashplan and Backblaze have been suggested. I have googled these and they seem to be only priced in $. Does this matter? Do you have any recommendations for these or other plans or do you have any comments about these plans?

I use Amazon Photos but only for some of my photos, so not a true backup. I could upload more but it is not quick and certain files are rejected. If you already have Prime it is worth a test.

After reading good reports about Backblaze I had a free trail and was impressed. I really need to sign up for a permanent plan and if I did it would be Backblaze.

No worries about pricing in US $.

Please check the recovery options as these may not suit you.

sorry for the hijack, but have you used the product? (Looks good)

Yes I use both Crashplan and iDrive at the moment.

iDrive is good for backing up multiple computers to a single iDrive account.

Crashplan is the only one that had the capacity I needed for my main computer with all my photos/videos when I subscribed. All other computers in the house are backed up to iDrive.

I used backblaze and it was very decent for the money. Now I have stopped pro work I use Amazon its easy on the ipad

Thanks for these. A question about BackBlaze and Crashplan - do you have to pay the American website or is there one here that I can use?

Crashplan is the better of the two as it's a permanent archive and Backblaze deletes data once it's been disconnected for 30 days unless you pay for upgrades.

What sort of volume do you have on Dropbox please in terms of TB's?

I have 2TB of storage, which is about 45% full. This is linked to my main PC at home, which has a RAID setup within it. I find it most useful because I also have it linked to my Mac, so I can edit in front of the TV in the knowledge that changes etc end up on the cloud and my other PC.

I heard about RAID stuff today from a neighbour, I will see what I can find out about it. IF any one has a simple, relatively jargon free link to an explanation, that would be helpful.

I use Amazon Prime for some photos but find it very slow. I tried to upload 179 raw files from a 22mb camera today and it is still going after 7 hours.

What are the file sizes and what is your upload speed?

PS and FWIW on an ADSL connection I never considered anything like cloud storage but since upgrading to fibre and being on an upload speed of > 5.3Mbps (current speed but I have seen 6.5Mbps) it is now practical though not as fast as I would like but cannot justify an 80/20 speed connection......I am on a 40/10 connection.

As is shoot with Fuji I mainly do jpegs so much quicker and they are 10.5 mb and upload pretty quick

Could you explain the setup you have for uploading? When you say uploading from the camera, do you have the card in the camera and the camera connected to your PC which in turn uploads the files?

I use Backblaze, it's USA based, but as I pay using my CC, any $ to £ conversion is automatic, so not an issue for me.
The initial upload takes a long time (I had ~ 1Tb, which took a few days), but after that it's fast enough that I don't notice it.

I upload from this iPad Pro. Basically edit in LR CC then output what I think are the best to the camera roll and allow them to upload to Amazon prime photos.
i am doing this with BT snail internet 20 mps download 7 mps upload doesn’t take that long

The files are uploaded from the hard drive. The files are RAW approx 30 MB and I have one of the faster Virgin Media BB packages with a claimed upload speed of 20 Mbps. Connection is over wi-fi. Of the 179 images, 29 failed to upload.

@Brentor

I think that the possible bottle neck is that you are uploading via WiFi. If you can try an ethernet connection and compare the upload times with what you have used via WiFi. That "test" may address why it has taken so long and that number of files failed.

I did back up the same pc and all the external drives to Backblaze over WiFi and it was much quicker. I cannot run an ethernet cable to that pc without moving it, I may try power line adapters. I do wonder if Amazon restrict upload speeds.

I have the same Virgin Media package as you, 200Mbps download and 20Mbps upload.

I have just uploaded 3.22GB cosisting of 480 jpgs in 6 folders in 10.28 minutes.I agree with Box Brownie that your issue is not Amazon or Virgin Media it's the transfer of files via WiFi.

Thanks. If you have WiFi as well, what speeds to do get other devices that have an ethernet connection?

A couple of questions for those of you making use of the Amazon Prime option...... Have you created aspecific folder for syncing to Amazon? Or do you just point the Amazon sync service at a folder holding all your images and let it back them up?

And are you storing just jpegs or RAW or both?

I do have the option of using Amazon's service and I'm trying to work out the best approach.

I log into Amazon/ your Amazon drive and drag the folder I want uploaded onto the page. I think you can download Amazon drive software that has a folder you can point/drag files or folders to for auto upload.

EDIT:

Amazon Drive Software Here

I back up to my NAS (which also takes a local usb drive copy) into folders sorted by year, month and event.
Then each night my NAS copies the files in specified folders to Prime.
Backups are of jpgs, raws and sidecars (sidecars aren't included in the free files, but I have ~ 2TB of images with only ~ 300MB of sidecars

Thanks @admirable and @LC2. Interesting to see what others are doing.

One supplemenatary question for @LC2, when you say....
....... Then each night my NAS copies the files in specified folders to Prime.

Do you mean that the actual NAS uploads the files or do you have the Amazon software pointing at your NAS?
