Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

I was reading article the other day the colour blue as a word apparently did not exist till a couple of hundred years ago ,its not mentioned anywhere in ancient writings , and it seems that everyones perception of colour is different ,which could account for variations in saturation of different folks photos . they did a experiment with a African tribe with a card with different shades of green and one blue dot and no one picked out blue as being the odd one out but every shade of green had its own name . strange but true

An interesting post.

In Welsh there is only one word for blue and green - GLAS. This covers them both. It seems so strange to me!

From my days as a psychology student I recall that different cultures divide the spectrum up into very different "segments" compared to how we do it. So we may see ROYGBIV while other cultures may have a completely different set of colours and almost certainly a different number of them.

You may remember a few months ago I posted a 100 % crop of a landscape taken with my EM1.2 /12-100 zoom, which showed some rather worrying "clumping" of detail (eg vegetation, foliage) at longer distances.

Well yesterday I used my 12- 45 zoom for the first time on the same body and I was immediately struck by how incredibly sharp the images were! Absolutely no hint of any strange focus/sharpness/NR issues. I haven't done any actual tests yet but it does suggest there might be a problem with my particular 12-100 lens or that in general that model is not quite as good as many people seem to claim!

I've not had the 12-45 but I did have the 12-40 at the same time as my 12-100mm. Tested them side by side and at the same apertures there was no noticeable difference in sharpness etc (at least to my eyes) both have their pros and cons though. The 12-40 having the faster aperture and the 12-100 being more versatile but heavier.
Weighing everything up I kept the 12-100 and sold the 12-40.

everyone else stopped taking pics ? anyway the collared doves have taken up residence in next doors eucalyptus tree and the female ? is sat on the start of the nest while the male builds it up round her
just moved in by jeff and jan cohen, on Flickr
I've not seen a right lot recently, other than the sparrows which come to the garden feeder, and you can only post so many sparrows :)

I did see a few Goldfinches a few days back and managed s few photos but they were quite high up in the tree and the light was abysmal. I might post a few up later once I run them through denoise.

Morning all, I may accidentally have an Olympus 100-400mm coming next week aha But have a question regarding Image stabilization for when it arrives.. I’m using the OMD EM5 Mark3 which has the 5 point stabilization built in, but I also understand the 100-400 has in built IS, so just wandered when both are mounted together is it best to have IS turned on both, or just one on or the other?

Many thanks :)

Cant they be used together, giving extra stops of stabilization?

That sounds like an interesting "accident"........

From some of the youtube reviews I have seen, AFAIK the IBIS and the lens IS don't work together. I'm sorry I can't remember the answer to your question but it might be worth searching YT.

Camera on lens off.

Haha yeah well couldn’t resist after seeing some of the sample images that have started coming out, think it’s going to be an improvement on the 75-300!

Is for the IS, yeah this is what I thought.. I think your right I’ll have a look as some YT to see.. but still think it’s going to be a good lens to use hopefully :)

Cheers :)

Camera on lens off.
I'm sure I heard it the other way round ie lens on body off. IBIS is not supposed to be as effective at longer focal lengths as lens based stabilisation is. Something to do with the sensor not being able to move enough to compensate for the more exaggerated movements at 400mm.
A bit of a trial maybe needed.

Ok. I know BF stated that his em1 mk2 firmware was undated for larger FL's. I thought the em5 mk3 might have been as well?

Yes there is a firmware update for the new lens but the sensor has limited movement to compensate @400mm, the lens has more movement in the IS motor even though it's only 3 stops comp vs 5.
It'd be best to try them out against each other.

Thank everyone for your help & comments, very much appreciated :)

I think like you all say the best thing will be just to do some experiments when it arrives.

Cheers all :)

It would

Right you need lens I.s on .. I.b.i.s will not work with that lens , the update for the 1 series bodies gives you pitch and yaw ? As well ..with the Panasonic lens you have to input lens priority in menu not sure about the 5 series

Thank for this Jeff. I think I’ll have to wait until it arrives and then see what works best & what setting I have available on the EM5.3

gains slightly on sharpness and speed of focus, but lacks in length its not on my shopping list at this moment in time .I already have a 50-200mm f2.8 SWD and although not that fast it still delivers super shots and with 1.4 tc reaches 283mm
I'm still very much on the fence over the new lens to as it will have the reach with a 1.4 tc but I will need that reach in winter light where aperture /iso problems lie ,looking at reports from new owners on Facebook etc experienced long range shooters are finding it good but quiet a few newbies are struggling . not realising its not suddenly going to turn them into proficient pros

Seems like a hell of a deal?
Is it too good to be true?
There appears to be no notification of the deal on the regular Olympus website.
prices on the camera /lens combos seem on the high side to me ,but o.k if your just getting into mft

But according to the deal above you can buy an EM1 ii body for £1099 and get a free £1099 lens.

Nor me

It is possible that there might be a goodly number of new unwanted E-M1mk2's coming onto the market depressing 2nd hand prices ? :( :banghead:

I was thinking of buying the camera and selling the lens

And lenses.
I think some folks will buy the camera, get the free lens, sell both and make a profit....
