What's the best way to reduce hotspots in reflections?

I've been trying some light painting of cars using multiple flash shots blended in Photoshop. A typical set up is the camera looking 3/4 on front with the speedlite (softbox) being moved from the rear forwards (camera left) for each shot at a height of 8ft pointed directly down at the car. I usually end up with maybe 6-8 shots of the side to make sure i have it all covered and have enough of an overlap that i can clone out the hot spots.

I was just wondering, without having the opportunity to do a lot of trial and error, is there a technique/ rule of thumb for this. I.e. incident and reflected angle rules which would reduce the hotspots?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Use a much larger modifier

Understand angle of incidence vs reflection

Question, are you just trying to globally light the car with multiple flash shots, or also wanting to emphisise the shape and lines of the car?
