Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Yes it will have many uses Robin Hopefully the price will drop a little late next year in the mean time you will have the bird focus firmware to play with Now that should be fun if it works as shown .

The new 150-400 at 6.5K o_O I hope it makes you all that buy, better phographers.

Re: the new lens

Imaging Resource have posted their review

PS FWIW I do rate IR reviews....one of the ones I trusted when make my purchase choices.

I was just looking at the image he took of the squirrel at almost 1200mm Equiv. and it's amazing given it is shot with all the extra glass in the way and at F/11.

Double rollover on the lottery tonight; just sayin' ;)

Well at 6.5k it's far cheaper than Canons 200/400 with a built in tc around 10k and opens more opportunity's to get the shot so yes it will make people better photographers , if i was still with Olympus I would get one .

Rob.

as I said earlier elsewhere ,no one is looking at Brexit and the new owners there have been some really silly deals on olympus stuff lately , I believe Japan is one of the first countries to do a trade deal with us whether that will change things who knows .

you also have to take into account the grey importers such as Panamoz and others , h.dew in the u.k etc .. let the dust settle and I can see 2k plus knocked off the price in general .. EVERY company launches new top range gear at premium prices initially especially if its in short supply .

if I was seriously contemplating this (I'm not ) but if I would also consider a Sony A9mkii and 200-600 lens for the same price

.... I have no plans to buy (so far!) but what a lens like this does is provide the POTENTIAL for the photographer to capture 'better' photos. It is enabling.

I agree with Rob :

There is a Mike Inkley vid out, he speaks highly of it and the shots look razor sharp. Looking forward to seeing what people on here do with that investment. If money was no object it would be in my bag for sure Robert.

I agree with Rob :
Potential is the point here Robin, it would be great to have that potential to use such a beast of a lens.

This is what i went for Jeff it is a great combo but f6.3 can be limiting as the light drops so then i used my Olympus with the 300 f4 the problem was having to take 2 systems with me so i got the FE 600 f4 and let my Olympus go .

This new lens with in built tc along with bird AF should be as good as you can get so i may well take a look late next year I do hope the new takeover keeps things progressing it's looking good at the moment .

Olympus 150-400
I very rarely can be bothered to post these days. I thought I should just add my two peneth worth to the discussion though.
I run 2 systems Canon and Olympus
I bought the olympus system mainly for traveling and the issues with baggage allowances.
So will I buy the new lens if so why
At about 2kilos and 12 inches long
Weight and size get a thumbs up
For traveling
Lens coverage 150-1000
And good macro abilities
No more missed shots due to wrong lens
More salable images
So gets another thumbs up
Aperture 4.5 up to 800mm equivalent
So another thumbs up for size of package
Price if you are selling work it will soon recover your initial outlay if you are a pro
And if your wealthy the price doesn't come into it.
For me the biggest gain with this lens fitted to my EM1x is I have the best focal length and fastest aperture I can get in this type of lens for those fast happening one off opportunities. Will it improve my photography only by the smallest amount but it adds a different type of arrow to my quiver

The top one is best joe ,you really need the bird looking more towards the camera ,but exposure is right despite your doubts

Thanks Jeff :)

I totally agree though, but unfortunately he was too interested in the sun before he flew off the wrong direction aha.

one from today ringed plover ,massive nearly 100% crop on this ,I'm really pleased with how the lens performs with results like this

and another from yesterday in the storm , sky replacement used as the original was a uniform dark grey with no appeal

I really like the image Jeff. But its the sky replacement that bugs me. I'm glad you made it clear, but now I'm wondering if you have changed the whole background or just the sky? In reality, if it was bright and sunny as the background suggests, there would have been some shadows on the foreground, somewhere, wouldn't there?

the sun would have been behind me if there had been any , the buildings etc in the background are really there but around 3 miles distant across the estuary . and it was a really stormy gloomy day at one point the clouds were virtually black .. from home I can see across the estuary daily from the living room and the changes in visibility are unreal at times going from bright and clear to totally obscured within a few minutes as a weather front moves along the coast . I'll try to do a original to show you how bad it was

Agreed, I think that's one of the better examples I've seen for use of the new PS sky replacement tool. Well done Jeff. If you hadn't of said, I doubt anyone would have noticed.

Thanks Andrew and Simon once the weather improves and I can hit the right spots I will start to add some of my own skies to the data bank , I feel the main problem is most of there skies were taken in the u.s.a so don’t look quiet right .. this bloody covid is so restrictive

when I posted this the other day I said it was a big crop , so doing a repost with the cropped and uncropped shots . got to love how sharp the new oly 100-400 is wide open

Very impressive, it sure is a brilliant lens!

I definitely need to look back as some of my images & not be scared of cropping in too much, because your images prove that they can still be impressive :)

More technically excellent shots from Jeff!

Regarding the starlings / sky replacement, I know I've got a bee in my bonnet about replacing skies but I'd have been quite happy with your cloudy version, although I might have done a little more processing on it. I really like it as an image.

Not a problem at all Jerry ,to me it’s just a pastime/ hobby gives me something to do while swmbo watches endless game shows .... in all honesty I rarely take anything seriously ,just want to keep the mind active

Am still very pleased indeed with my Olympus ED 100-400mm (on M1X). Yes it would be nice to have a wider aperture sometimes and for it to focus and track faster in pre sunrise and post sunset light but the key to happiness is to enjoy what you've got rather than think too much about what you haven't got (I must stop watching those videos about the new 150-400mm Pro!).

I honestly can't see myself using my ED 300mm F/4 Pro any more and am seriously considering offering it for sale.

Brilliant image Robin, really like the moody lighting :)

Also I fully agree with this thought.... “the key to happiness is to enjoy what you've got rather than think too much about what you haven't got”

Super image Robin has lots of mood to it .

Yes I keep watching them too It looks like the perfect long range zoom although I would need a EM1X too as i sold all my Olympus gear just depends on how the bird detection works so i'm on the fence about it .I like that with the 1.4 tc on you have even more Long zoom range + the in built tc to add if needed .
