Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Super image Robin has lots of mood to it .

Yes I keep watching them too It looks like the perfect long range zoom although I would need a EM1X too as i sold all my Olympus gear just depends on how the bird detection works so i'm on the fence about it .I like that with the 1.4 tc on you have even more Long zoom range + the in built tc to add if needed .

Rob.

.... Thanks Rob!

Yes, re the 150-400mm Pro, that built-in 1.25x is undoubtedly extremely easily switched as all the videos prove - Yet another example of Olympus ergonomics (which attracted me so much to the E-M1X). There have been a number of times when I have either wanted to add or remove my MC-14 from my 100-400mm and 1.25x isn't hugely different from 1.4x when you also have zoom. [Robin is not doing a very good job of dissuading himself from wanting a 150-400mm Pro!].

I always avoid mounting/unmounting TCs when outdoors as it exposes internals to the elements etc. It's partly why I have a second body at hand.

Not long before the Bird Detection Tracking feature is downloadable! Only 10 more sleeps?

I should investigate the existing Face/Eye Priority AF option which already exists and how well it might track distant surfers although black rubber suits provide a lot of the contrast needed. I am finding that AF Tracking works well and note that Tracking and Face/Eye Priority cannot be selected to be both Enabled at the same time. I might try Face Priority AF and see what happens although surfer's faces are usually at distance - I might need Head Priority AF!

I’m keeping my kit as is till travel restrictions are lifted . Might look into a e.m1X if things improve next year but at the moment I can’t knock what I get with what I have for the limited use it’s getting

Swopping TCs can be a pain with a fixed focal length the other day i had a shorty coming towards me ( long way off ) had a 2x tc on then had to try and work out how close it may come so took it off and put a 1.4 tc on it didn't come closer so had the wrong tc on but all the time changing means you can't shoot .
With this new lens it would not be an issue you would be ready All the time hence im thinking about it..

.... I don't know the details of lockdown where you are Jeff but talking with a surfer friend this morning (we were discussing conditions for tomorrow) he said we were allowed to drive as far as we liked to then do some exercise. Walkabout with a camera is exercise.

Peter Forsgard just posted a short video on the two hours he had with the 150-400mm. It's a fun watch I thought as it shows that not all things go to plan. It also shows you can still get some nice shots despite the weather. Some of the later shots are at 1000mm - love it!

Not officially allowed out of wales , and as the Welsh police have been doing ANPR on cars coming into wales from England I’m not going to chance it , even though I can see my hot spots across the estuary/border from the front room .
plus I really don’t want to chance going into a covid hot spot

In Monty Python speak..."and now for something completely different" :D

Went out at lunchtime to the local nature reserve 5 minutes from work for some exercise. Took with me my new Nikon Z6 II with the 300mm F4 PF and the 1.4x Converter. Now the Z6 II (like the original Z6's) is a lovely body to hold, and has superlative image quality even at high ISO. As it's such a new body, I went looking for small birds to test the AF. Wasn't really that much around, but what I did notice was compared to my EM1X and EM1 MK III, and using either the 40-150 or the 300mm Pro with or without teleconverters, was how much quicker the AF was on the Olympus bodies compared to the Nikon.

The Nikon seemed to take a second or so to acquire focus whereas my Olympus systems lock on instantly. As good as the Nikon mirrorless system is (and it is very good), currently I think Olympus can show it a clean pair of heels when it comes to AF. When the EM1-X get's its bird AI tracking firmware upgrade in a week or so's time, (hopefully), the EM1X with the Olympus 300mm F4 pro will take it to the next level. Now to be fair, the Nikon 300mm F4 PF and 1.4x converter was "adapted" using the FTZ adaptor and that might slow it down a bit, so hopefully when the long native Z lenses are released by Nikon (100-400 and 200-600), the speed will be quite a bit better.

I think the point of the post is that there seems to be a lot of people abandoning M4/3 for FF systems right now, and bemoaning that the sky is falling down on Olympus, but to be honest, having the choice of both system, for wildlife, I'd pick the Olympus system any day. Of course something like the Sony A9 or A9 II will show the Olympus a clean pair of heels in the AF tracking department (at present), and pretty much represents the best AF that mirrorless has to offer right now, but I don't know, despite all the doom and gloom, there's just something about the Olympus system that makes me really enjoy photography and it's not going anywhere for me soon.

Don't get me wrong, for Portraits, weddings (which I still do a little of), Landscapes (which the Z7 excels at), the Z system has an awful lot to commend it, but for wildlife shooting (at present) give me Olympus any day :). The grass isn't always greener (maybe just a different shade of green) ?

Great Post. Must tag my mate @bigsmiff

No doubt about the a9mkII it is better it gives the confidence that it will get the shot most times that said the EM1X was close but just seemed to miss the mark just a little to much and waiting and wondering if the new lens and bird detection would ever show made me sell .

If it is as good as i hope I'm happy to run it along side my Sony as it will offer a great deal of more reach .

.... And there you have it! < Your words I have highlit in bold. Enjoying your photography has to be the most important consideration regardless of which camera system you choose to use. There is no such thing as the one and only perfect camera, as we all know.

I enjoyed my Canons, both D-SLR and mirrorless, very much indeed but personally I enjoy my Olympus system more.

those of us that have got the lens already KNOW its a game changer .. and I think my own posts since acquiring the lens back it up as a wildlife wonder heres some from yesterday in bad light gawd luv a duck .jpglook before you leap .jpgany coals a goal .jpg

Excellent set Jeff! It sure is a brilliant lens!

And these images for sure, prove people wrong, who say such apertures at long distance won’t be any good in rubbish light conditions... as clearly it does!

I like this chap - another unbiased review of the 100-400mm

View: https://youtu.be/uHAK7Vwm2P0

.... He's really good. First time I have come across him. Am now Following him on Instagram.

100-400mm vs 300mm Pro ? It's Horses-for-Courses. I favour zoom lenses for my own photography.

Great to hear him absolutely confirm the same Pro standard of weatherproofing.

I'm looking forward to what he has to say about the 150-400mm Pro!

I hope they can supply the 150-400 quicker than they have the 100-400, I have been waiting 3 months on pre order for the 100-400. The 150-400 certainly looks a fantastic piece of kit but way out of my price range. When my 100-400 arrives I will be happy if I can produce images anywhere near the standard I see on this thread :)

Wex is the company I have it on back order with, I have been checking all the main sites regularly. Emailed Olympus once and got a different story about expected delivery times. Seems like Olympus or the retailers have no idea of when the lens will be in stock. Early November BH photo site said it expected stock in on the 19 November. Just before that date they changed the text to " coming soon". Patience they say is a virtue !!

first snow bunting shot 100-400 + 1.4tc so 560mm x2 .hand held quite pleased with the results so far but going to take my time with editing .. heres one to whet your appetite

Brilliant as always Jeff, but with the TC too, even more impressive!

It just shows how good the lens can be, in pretty much any conditions & even with a TC attached.

Buy the one in the Classifieds

Well , apropos the discussion this morning, my local dealer rang me at 230 to say that my ordered copy of the 100-400 had arrived and I just needed to pay the balance for delivery. :)
After some b***gering about with the credit card company, it will be on its way tomorrow.
I got rid of my last bits of Nikon equipment to be able to afford this and I hope that I can do it justice.

It is still showing as OOS on the main sites but maybe there are now a few in the country which will be distributed.

depending on which body you have ,just ensure the firmware is up to date and your up and running . its a stunning bit of kit and tbh I dont think I have yet moved it off of F6.3 on purpose

Thanks for the advice.
I have EM1 mkii which is on v3.2 firmware , which i should update to 3.3 acording to olympus website?
I cannot see any update to the lens so presumably it will be as it comes.
I have seen advice re set up for the body and lens on this thread but at 21000+ posts they may take a bit of finding.

Best advice I was given with this lens & it’s the best advice I would now give is...

HAVE FUN! ITS A BRILLIANT LENS!

There are more major updates coming next week so I would hold fire till then

I think that this has been asked before but I cannot find it.
The EM1 ii has 5 axis IS
The 100-400 lens has 3 axis IS
They do not sync.
So is it better to have the camera sync on (5) and the lens off or the camera off and the lens on (3)? Or just both on and not bother?
Or is that too simplistic?
