OK, I know there are nowhere near as good as some I've seen on here, but this sequence was taken back in August 2014 on a lowly Panasonic GH3 (16mp) camera and the consumer Panasonic 100-300 MK I.

I looked at the raw files and they looked very noisy and rough, but thought I'd give them a run though Photoshop and Topaz Denoise AI and Sharpen AI, and much to my surprise, despite the heavy crops, I don't think they came out too bad. Probably my best kingfisher shots to date :D Like I say, a long way from the best I've seen on here, but not too shabby for a camera launched in 2013 ?

Nothing wrong with those and I say it everytime, always nice to see. (y)

Very nice. I haven't got a shot with one holding a catch in its beak - must get back out on the river.

I think unless you're making a living out of it, the main thing is to enjoy the image making process and not just look at the results. To that end, these are lovely captures - I like that they show the bird in habitat, like how you'd normally see them in the wild. As an aside, I recently did a talk on the subject of macro photography and touched on various equipment - including the use of compact cameras. The examples I showed including those taken years ago with a 4MP(!!) Nikon. There's really nothing wrong with that. All cameras have limitations, but rarely I find MP to be the reason why an image fails.

Thanks all. Out of interest for the ornithologist out there, isn’t there a way to tell a male from a female (something to do with beak colouring or something ?)

Lower bill mostly black = male. On the female it is mostly orange.
