Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Surprised at your comments over Topaz denoise AI Robin. I've yet to find a high ISO image that it hasn't' improved immeasurably. What I have found though is that you need to take it off Automatic and I very rarely if ever use the "Denoise AI" part but instead much prefer using the "AI Clear" section. But at the end of the day, you use what works for you, and if that's Imageonic Noiseware, then who are we to tell you otherwise.

Cool shots BTW, but as you say an F13 lens (with the 2x attached) is never going to be great at fast moving action, especially in UK winter light.

.... I'm very happy with this particular image, Jeff.

The light was much better than the one in my Reply #21,991 and was coming at a slight side angle. The rock layers are at all sorts of angles and stepped tiers and some light is reflected from the rock pools etc.

For me, a bigger crop would have ruined the composition and the atmosphere of the whole environment. Additionally it would have exposed further weaknesses/limitations due to enlargement. That's where m4/3 and higher ISO really does have limitations. It would have been a different story if shot on my heavy Canon 1DX-2 + 500mm F/4L II + 1.4x combo.
waffle to hide your failings      xxxx :exit::exit:

Am having a dilemma about my m43 gear. I do like to have a camera with me and have had numerous over the years before narrowing things down to Nikon last year with a D500 and D600 ( both of which my son uses almost exclusively )

This year i bought an E-M10 mk2, an O17 f1.8, a S7.5FE and a P12-32 but i find that as I have all of these they are in a small bag which invariably doesn't leave the house. So i'm now thinking one of 2 things:

1) sell up m43 and go back to the X100 series. I had the "T" in 2017 and really liked it. However, FL and lack of flippy screen isn't always ideal. Cost to change to a "F" approx £150. The next step is to get the "V" which would solve the screen but cost another £320

2) sell the m10.2 and get a m1.2. This would allow me to shoot motorsports if required although as my son works weekends, i should have usually access to the d500. However, it will be the same size( pretty much ) as i have now and so could mean it also stays at home. Cost to change approx £500

I was in a similar dilemma to yourself. I travel around a lot with work and like to carry a camera with me. I tried the OMD EM1 Mk3 for awhile but much as it is a lovely camera I ended up replacing it with a Fuji 100V. It just suits my needs much better. I also had a Sony A7Riii for landscapes etc. though that has now gone to purchase the bi-fold doors my missus said I apparently wanted for our new extension.... I could have sworn I agreed to the much cheaper French doors..... Nevermind, the empire will strike back in the new year ....

i also travel ( past tense now of course ) a lot with work, whether UK or Europe so a smaller camera would suit be better..

Sorry about the extension. Apparently these "misunderstandings" are fairly common..

Each to their own of course Damian, but I never got on with the brief fling I had with a Fuji X100. The fixed focal length was too limiting for me (and the accessory lenses are both expensive and don't actually get you much of a FL change). Also, might just be me, but I never really saw much benefit from the larger APC-S size sensor over the M4/3 one despite the forums telling me different (maybe ½ a stop at the very most), and the AF was way superior on the OMD body.

If you add a grip to the X100 (as it has none to speak of) and a 17mm F1.8 lens to the OM-D, the package sizes are not substantially different (a little more in weight), but the Olympus (be it a Pen-F, EM1, MK II, MKIII, EM5 or indeed EM10) all have those special Olympus bells and whistles (live composite, live time, amazing stabilization etc)

Maybe my lack of inspiration is building my GAS...

Will continue to deliberate ...

Thing is photography these days has so many variables not just in cameras and lenses but also in computers and software ... I have a couple of contacts / aquaintences that seem to have a endless supply of money to keep the best gear made as it’s released ,stuff that back in the day I drooled over ..
But they as a lot of others do just shoot in j.peg very nice stuff but to me only half a job as so much more is possible .

Photography is my one regret. I used to love it and have so much passion to go out and shoot, getting up before sunrise, going out for a sunset. Any excuse.

But, for some reason, it’s disappeared in the last 2 years. I now use an iPad to edit ( mostly badly ) instead of a laptop.

Perhaps I’ve become lazy, therefore disappointed with my shots ( more “snaps” nowadays ), and lost the love and enjoyment

To be honest, not done much myself lately. One from yesterday, a simple December Robin with the EM1X

Yep, done both mine as well. Killy, did they both ask you to enter the Language region and set the clock / time zone again, as both my 1X and MK III did but all other settings seem to still be there.

Over on DPreview, a few people that have already tired it says it also works for cats and dogs too (must try that out later with my two mutts. :D)

On a separate note, after nearly 6 years the lens hood on my 40-150 F2.8 Pro finally decided to disintegrate and explode into multiple pieces (seems to be a very common problem). Springs and ball bearings everywhere. Luckily I managed to find all 6 springs but only 4 of the 6 ball bearings. Equally luckily I found a post on DPreview where it had happened to another guy and he pointed me in the right direction (Amazon) it pick up a bag of the 2.5mm ball bearings (25 pack) for just a couple of quid. A bit of swearing and manual dexterity last night and it's all fixed, super smooth and locks cleanly at both ends of it's travel and I've re-glued the outer trim piece back on (the part that had detached to cause the problem in the first place). Not too bad for £2.53 when Olympus wanted over £90 for a new hood !

.... It's usual to need to reset the Language and Time after an Olympus Firmware update.

Please let us know if the new version tracks cats and dogs is improved. Mine, not latest Dec2020 Firmware, did a very good job of tracking a Lurcher running on the beach last weekend - I think I have it currently set on Motorsports for surfers - Their faces are usually distant and not necessarily facing the camera.

.... My lens hood burst apart on a sandy beach and so several springs were also lost! It is a very common problem which Olympus are aware of.

There is a lens hood made by a third-party for Canon which is exactly the same size and profile and fits perfectly but only reversible, not clever sliding. It's much cheaper but not so cheap it would put you off! I posted about it a while ago in this thread.

Has the 40-150mm F/2.8 Pro been available for 6 years!? I bought mine exactly a year ago in 2019 and so Olympus have not sorted out this problem.

this firmware update is getting rave reviews , so I'm now thinking about a upgrade to a em1x it will be a financial stretch but I have started the quotes etc process .time will tell

Looks good to me Mike.

Rob.

I may have exaggerated slightly :D - just checked my equipment portfolio on the MyOlympus website, and it shows I registered it as brand new on Feb 2nd 2015, so just under 6 years old.

Any love in here for EM-5 mk3 ?
I’m particularly interested in how the eye/face detect performs.

I am sorely tempted............time to sell the last of my, unused for a while, Canon gear to at least offset the cost as much as possible????????

cant seem to find a used e-m1x anywhere at the moment ?

I'll re-phrase that I should have added at a reasonable price . most seem to be near the new price ... will leave for now and see how things go over xmas

.... @Sootchucker Andrew was selling his E-M1X in TP Classifieds but I think he has changed his mind.

Olympus were offering some very heavy discounts but I think that campaign has ended now.

don’t want to go private robin prefer a warranty. T.b.h

No problem Jeff as it's not for sale anyway :D

Tried the upgraded firmware 2.0 today on a very bleak cold and raining lunchtime - pretty much nothing around at all (all had more sense than me to be out), but for the few birds I found, the AI Bird tracking picked the bird up immediately then just as quickly found the head and tracked it pretty darn well.

About the only thing they need to improve is the ability to select a subject when multiple birds are in the frame (as they were at lunchtime with 6 ducks in the distance all grouped together) and the tracking AF put a bounding box around all of them but I couldn't see a way to select which bird I wanted tracking (unless I'm missing something).

Done my 1-mkii earlier apparently just a bit more stability added to I.S it certaintly felt better .... hopefully slightly better weather at the weekend to try things out . Plus I’m allowed legally back over the border

I presume £1300 is too much

It is interesting in that Petr Bambousek said on DP Review (I could not find the post referred to by others) that the Bird AI struggled when more than one bird was in the frame.....it did not pick the nearest bird and there is no facility to select the primary subject.

Also, some including was it our own @RedRobin :) that it seemed latch onto other animals! But is this in regard to what I have read that the Bird AI identifies the bird with a white box and then a smaller green focus box locks onto the eye? NB this dual box behaviour is akin to human face recognition on the MK2 and MK3.

Edit
I have found the DPReview post

PS I would happily sacrifice the human face recognition AI for bird/animal AI in the mk3, if that could be done ;)

.... Considering that this has been shot through a wet glass window with all the inevitable haze and reflections and at ISO 6400 and handheld at only 1/20s, this is amazing and the new Bird AF feature has definitely worked well on the eye.

I'm planning to update the Firmware on my M1X later today ready for shooting on Saturday. I'm going to be interested how the Bird Tracking feature works on more distant targets.

.... I guess that an expert like Petr Bambousek, if it was possible, would have used the 'joystick' to move the green box to initially target which of the several birds he wanted to focus on < All easier said than done.

As he says in the DPReview post, the white boxes detect and the green box shows what the AF is focussing on. You would want to select an aperture to best offer a depth of field to cover which other birds/targets you additionally wanted to get in focus.

In my experience shooting surfers with AF Motorsport Tracking, my M1X will display more than one white box as detected subjects as well as the green box (ideally placed inside a larger white box).

The key is to realise the difference between Detection [white boxes] and In Focus [green box]. The green box turns to orange when the tracked target moves outside the AF Points zone you have preselected, hence warning you it may not have achieved sharp focus.

The whole behaviour is further influenced by your AF Priority settings. Modern digital photography seems to get more and more complicated, eh?

I found Canon's AF settings even more complicated and soon gave up taking the advice of various respected wildlife photographers in their YouTube tutorials when there were contradictions between them!
