I know drinking lots of water is good for you.. But .. what about a pint of water with cordial added? So well flavoured water.. Same effect? Or a pint of hot water with a tea bag and some milk but no sugar?

Its still pints of water do you still get the same benefit ?

You'll mostly get the hydration effect, but anything else will depend on what you add, Many cordials contain lots of sugar, or sugar replacements which add lots of calories, as well as not really being good for you if lots is consumed. Same with milk, if is it full fat the calories add up, but less so for semi, and skimmed.

Also depends on the diuretic effect to an extent.. example with beer - every 200ml you drink, you urinate 320ml (drink a six pack, pee a ten pack - ok, it's 9.6 but close enough)

This reminds me of the story about the man who followed all the advice about how to keep himself in perfect condition, so that he would live to 100.

He got to 40; then killed himself to escape the dreadful boredom... :coat:

Tea is full of caffeine (unless you drink decaf) so while you might get hydrated you’ll get the not so good side effects. Fruit sugar from cordial is still sugar. Plain water is the best option really.

I add no sugar squash or cordial to my water, moreso later in the day. Helps me drink more water. I don’t like hot drinks so no tea, coffee etc, and plain water becomes slightly unpalatable towards the end of the day.

There was another story about a man who followed, with enormous effort, all the advice to keep him fit. He didn't smoke, he didn't drink alcohol, he touched no drugs and he stuck to a pure vegan diet. On his forty sixth birthday, he was crossing a busy road when a friend called out "Happy birthday" from behind him. He turned to see who it was, so he didn't see the forty eight ton lorry that squashed him... :wideyed:

As @hunnymonster said drinking ‘fluid’ is not so simple. Any drink with alcohol or cafeiene in it has a diuretic effect - makes you pee. Most advice hovers around drinking 2 litres of fluid daily but if your fluid contains caffeine or alcohol you’ll need to drink more. Quite a lot more in some cases.

So the answer is no, it’s not the equivalent of pints of water.

If the amount of cordial is small it is not going to make a lot of difference; it depends on how strong you like the flavour. Tea and coffee are also OK - have a look here https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/water-drinks-nutrition/

There is a lot rubbish talked about amounts of water to drink. A fair bit of the water intake comes from food and it was this contribution from food that was part of a study in 1945 but in subsequent years was omitted when advice was given about how much water to consume each day.

I'm sure many of us recall years ago when the bottled water that many people carry around and drink now did not exist and the streets weren't littered with people dying of dehydration.

I'll take a water with me if I'm doing a hill or I will be out for a long time and it is hot, but normally I'd never think of carrying water.

Drinking lots of tea takes the iron out of your blood

Have you got a link for that data........during lockdown I think I have been getting through 8-10 cups of my green tea per day. Having said that I normally drink 5-6 a day :)

Don't know about you, but my drinks don't go anywhere near my teeth, it goes straight over my tongue and down my throat.

An interesting read of/about someone with a specific lifestyle.

There has never been any concern over my haemoglobin level and I have been drinking green tea for something like 20 plus years. I am not saying the article you linked to does not have relevance but, as I read it, refers to the presentation of a patient with an underlying anaemia with normal(?) test based results to indicate the cause.

pretty much a good sign if it looks like cider its not good
i generally have about 3 x 600ml water bottles during the day and one more after tea and then no more water after 8pm
i have one cup of expresso with milk in the AM and thats all the tea/coff i drink
one of the worst for tooth erosion is tea coff and diet drinks.

As a good northern lad, just add Vimto to taste! Plus, you can make yourself a mug of hot Vimto in cold weather. Sorted! ;)

Joking aside, as with most things, I expect it's a case of everything in moderation and as part of a balanced, calorie controlled diet.

When I were a lad I loved Vimto....:) That and Dandelion and Burdock, whatever was in it. Both are still available, I see.

If you drink more than you need you p*** a lot, adding cordials adds calories but you still p*** the same, just maybe a bit fatter :)

Tap water for hydration for me; can't complain as we've got great water up here. Alcohol wise I pretty much only drink good whisky, so I also use water as a palate cleanser. Pretty rare to use diluting stuff or cordials these days and if I do then it's usually premixed cordials.

I remember we had great water in Lancashire when I was a kid, but now in the South East, it is very chalky and has a distinct taste of chlorine.

Cannot beat a generous swig of chlorine water. I have been drinking it for decades :)

We've got friends in Sunderland and oh my God the water is horrific. Even when filtered and chilled in the fridge it's nasty. My tap water in London wasn't great either. Good tap water isn't something I take for granted :)
