Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

I'm afraid it's not for me now Box as I've ordered the Sony a1 and have left Olympus again for now, not easy to let my EM1X go as it is still the best camera in the hand to use but i have a lot of cash in my Sony lenses and the a1 expands them by quite a margin being 50mp .
Will still pop in here and look forward to see how Robin gets on with the new lens.

Rob.

Well you clearly make either system 'sing'........and the Sony system is certainly makes its mark or should that be 'marque' !

not been out today bar for shopping , and sat here this evening mulling over buying a macro lens again , had several and they never seem to keep my interest up long enough .. then I thought why not try out the close focus on the 100-400 lens , so I did grabbed my watch stuck it on the dining table and took a few shots hand held under normal room lighting .. results below so dont think I will bother with another macro ,this will do my needs. first shot at iso 6400 to second at 3200

A question for those with the EM1x - how do you find the positioning of the L-Fn button when shooting in portrait mode?

I found it very awkward on the Em1iii for this kitesurfer - I struggle to keep him and the sea in the frame with the 300mm lens. I don't fancy the size of the EM1x, but I do like the idea of easily switching to portrait mode and being able to keep shooting in portrait mode without straining my wrist.

And you know that lens will do in camera focus stacking and bracketing too.

I had forgotten that Pete ,the lockdown blues are not helping as I said I nearly spent loads on a unneeded macro lens ,when all I wanted was a close up lens which I already have in this .... and not forgetting it’s even closer with a 1.4 tc fitted

another one of my photos being used today on the spring watch website .. doing rather well since getting that oly.100-400 lens

.... In answer to your question I don't use the L-Fn button on my Oly lenses at all - Currently I am mostly shooting on my Olympus ED 100-400mm and it doesn't have the L-Fn button. But one of several major reasons I bought the M1X rather than the smaller bodies is that ability to easily change to and from landscape to portrait orientation shooting. Also I don't use camera body straps and the rig is easier and safer to manhandle with the extra grip especially with telephoto lenses. Plus it has extra battery etc etc etc - I don't want to be opening up the battery chamber on a beach in winter and usually go through one and a half batteries in a sunrise to sunset session - 1,400 shots last Sunday and more during this week < Mostly why I haven't had time to visit here.

On Wednesday I met a kitesurfing legend (others told me who he was later) who was riding, or should I say flying, a 'normal' surfboard and so I am going to start shooting some good kitesurfers. I think your stated restriction is more likely to be due to using such a long lens which isn't a zoom but I guess I'll discover the challenges soon enough for myself.

.... You don't need to be worried about it. Read the statements online and in the posted linked magazine in this thread recently.

If you were trying to get something done during the company changeover I gather there have been frustrating problems but even those should get resolved in time.

I don't own any oly kit just interested really, might get more m4/3 kit in the future. asking here as so many people who have done the research already. i take it from your comments that they will continue to make camera and lens?

When @RedRobin checks back this may whet his appetite a little more..... ;)

.... In spite of my covid jab today I am hungry!! Loss of appetite is a known side effect for some.

Every time I use my ED 100-400m, and I am currently shooting about 1,000 a week average, I imagine how I would be shooting the ED 150-400mm+1.25x Pro and it makes me feel happy. The ED 100-400mm is great but has some limitations for what I do a lot of.

.... Yes.

I am not the CEO of Olympus in their new format but I would bet money that they are continuing to design and produce their excellent camera products for a long time to come barring the extinction of the human race, which is always possible!

As far as anyone can predict in this crazy world yes they will carry on the two latest releases the 100-400 and the newer 150-400 with built in t.c have got long waiting lists ..sales in Japan are ahead of every other camera company . Yes new bodies are needed but Olympus suit a particular genre of buyers and most are happy with there gear

Thank you so much Robin. I have only just started using the L-Fn button myself. I am indeed restricted because it is a prime and sometimes some of the hotshots will start jumping right in front of me and they are too close - for composition that is, as the near focus distance on the 300mm is great. Sometimes I go back to using my Canon with the 100-400 if I think they will be doing tricks in front of me.

I understand the concern re changing batteries, but my battery on the EM1ii and EM1iii have never run out on me during a session - it is impressive. Perhaps I don't stay at the beach long enough :ROFLMAO:

There are quite a few strapless kitesurfers here, though probably not in the same league. Most kitesurfers have footstraps that they slide into, and occasionally you'll see ones where they strap themselves in like wakeboards, to do tricks - I can just imagine the knee injuries!

If I remember rightly, you have lovely blue sea where you are - it tends to be muddy brown here. I am quite jealous. Have fun!!

so does that mean no new cameras going forward?
As a retired o.a.p living in voluntary house imprisonment on the north wales coast due to a covid pandemic . I can’t honestly answer that ,you would have a better chance of guessing the correct lottery numbers on a Saturday night ...
Why not go on the Nikon,Sony, canon,Pentax sub sections and ask the same questions .. or simply e.Mail the head of the new Olympus group in Japan and ask him

wow, why the attitude? i asked a genuine question.no need to be a ****.
there was a rumour not long ago the production and/ or sales of oly were stopped i was just looking to see if anyone had an update.

It didn’t come across as a genuine question as the answers are readily available on the interwebby thing .. I just use the gear to take photos or I did before covid put a stop to that..
I don’t hold much faith with rumours or rumour web sites as there are far to many doom and gloom merchants about , and despite the rumours new lenses are still being made and sold sometimes with waiting lists to , fairly constant firmware updates are being added to camera bodies .. a new online magazine has just been published 3 days ago .. as to whether there are any new bodies due as I said above there no one will know till they are announced same as EVERY camera company out there ,so your question is irrelevant . All I do know is that I can get a full frame equivalent shot at 1150 mm hand held with current equipment that weighs exactly 2kg in total and of good enough quality for the BBC to use 3 of them in the last series of winter watch ..NUFF SAID

.... I think your original response is unintentionally and potentially misleading, Jeff, but I now see you have explained your thinking in #22,714. The new Oly company, whatever it's called, have already publicly stated very clearly and categorically that they are continuing to develop their camera products and have a roadmap.

Of course there are no guarantees just as no-one is guaranteed to live beyond tomorrow but they have a plan to continue.

.... Lovely blue sea in Kernowfornia aka Cornwall but I can't risk going there under lockdown. On the south coast where I am the local seas are very brown although golden brown in sunlight.

I often stay literally from sunrise til sunset without a break, hence two batteries needed plus two more spare if needed. I am running two identical M1X bodies so I have 6 batteries total..

i didn't even know their was a new company, so instead of attitude perhaps saying "there is a new company taking over" would of been a more appropriate response in talk tog forum. i am an m4/3 fan and its an really odd response to my very straightforward question

.... I don't think it's unreasonable for Jeff and others here in a thread with high Olympus content not to assume that you didn't know about what is a fundamental change in the Olympus corporate structure.

So perhaps the subject is now done and dusted and time to move on in this discussion.

.... Thanks for thinking of me re the zoomy thingy but I don't have anything to contribute to such a chat and would rather wait and read later what was discussed. I don't have any questions for Olympus either. Plus I might be out somewhere next Thursday taking photographs.

Sorry Niko but that in all honesty doesn’t wash , you say your a M4/3rds fan ,yet you say you didn’t know that Olympus camera division had been taken over , yet you previously stated that you had read about Olympus cameras on a rumour site .. my initial response was along the lines of there still selling lenses etc and updating camera software .. your reply was no more cameras going forward ... and being under virtual house arrest due to country/age/health my response to your ....click bait.... was justified
