Hi,

I've just bought my dream lens and my first Canon white - the Canon 300mm 2.8 IS L. The lens is in mint condition and I'd like to keep it in as good a condition as possible.

So just wondering if anyone could recommend a good lens coat - there's the Lenscoat on Wex which is around £90 or a cheaper one on ebay for £25. Is it worth paying the extra for the Lenscoat from Wex or will this one on ebay suffice?

I've got a Monopod I can use with the lens which is the Benro Adventure MAD49A, will it be ok to use the monopod attached directly to the lens foot or will the paint wear off? If it will wear is there some kind of lens foot I can attach first?

Lastly, I really could do with a new bag dedicated towards the Lens as it only fits in my current Lowepro backpack with nothing else in it and the hood has to be reversed. It would be great to have a bag where I can fit the lens in, with body attached, and the hood in shooting position.

Thanks for any advice!

For the lens coat, if you're planning on handholding it a lot I'd stump up the extra, as they tend to have a better fit than their cheaper counterparts.

However, if it'll be on a monopod I'd save the cash.

a massive congrats on the lens, I have been hanging on one for a year or so, and will hopefully soon get a good one. Not too sure how often they pop up in the for sale section, as I have not been a member for 60 days yet (newbie)

I'm not sure about hand holding it a lot - the lens is quite heavy! I'll probably have it on a tripod with a gimbal head as well as on a monopod. I went out for a walk with it yesterday on my monopod. In the manual it says you can keep the IS on when on a monopod but better not to when it's on a tripod.

I did have a Benro GH2 Gimbal head for my now sold Sigma 150-600 and was very happy with that so I'll buy another at some point, and for when I'm doing wildlife photography I'll ideally need a lens coat, but also want one to keep the lens looking nice, so I'll probably just bite the bullet and go for the Lenscoat one.

I've still not decided on a bag yet - the Think Tank Limo looks like it could work well, and there's the Gitzo 45L Adventury but that's 3kg itself!

George - thanks, I bought mine on ebay, I had to wait for about a year though, checking just about every week until a mint copy came up at a very good price.

Fantastic lens :)

You do get used to the weight quite quickly when hand holding the lens. I walk around all day with mine (now using the Mk 2 version) on a 1 series body attached to a Black Rapid strap. I will admit that after a full weekend of shooting, you do feel your lower back. I'm still not sure if a monopod would help much, as I used to have 400 f2.8 (MK 1) which was impossible to hand hold for more than a handful of seconds so used a monopod for it. I felt my back even more with that one, so think it was just the weight of the lens, and lifting it into position with the monopod attached and lugging it around all day rather than the hand holding.

I originally bought a cheapo ebay cover for my Sony 200-600 but was never really happy with its fit and ability to stay in place. Following a recommendation on here I bought one on
which was a vast improvement, excellent fit and a great deal more protective.
When I was shooting Canon I had the 300mm f2.8 Mk1, it was a thing of beauty!

Thanks. Funnily enough I just bought a cover from there about half an hour ago :)

Looking for a bag now. I think as I'm going to be doing wildlife photography I'd rather get a camo style bag as opposed to the Think Tank offerings. Although the Think Tank bags look great they just wouldn't really look the part out in the hills imo.

Looking at the Gitzo Adventury bags, expensive though.
