Hi, need a suggestion on how to put out peanuts to attract Jays that have turned up in the wood, the problem is that if I put peanuts out on a log the squirrel will just think Christmas has come early never mind the Blue and Great tits etc.
Any suggestions please?
Thank You, Russ.

Try a squirrel proof bird feeder. Or shoot the b*st*rds

Happy to come along with one of my toys

Put up a Christmas tree. Nature is nature - we all want the pretty little birds to be fed, and then some other troublemaker comes along and spoils it :)

I was getting a nice selection of blue tits, wagtails, nuthatches etc. and then the big black crows and the starlings got wind of the food - and took over the plot.

It's hard trying to discourage one form of nature, whilst trying to attract others.

(Or has been said - invest in a shooty thing)

IMO - I find it very worrying that people consider (or joke) about killing something just because its not what you wanted to take pictures of that day. If I followed that train of thought I might well shoot a few photographers that get too close to my chosen subjects. Why not just enjoy what comes along ? Also my experience of trying to get pictures of the elusive Jay, is that they never stay still for long and patience and planning is the key.

As Steve above says I am only interested with shooting with a camera not a gun apart from the fact I could not shoot a living thing, nature is nature and greys are part of that pest or not. Thank You for replies, Russ.

I gave up shooting a few years ago, got up one morning, decided it wasn’t for me anymore, after a lifetime of owning guns. I’ve shot many things in my time but never for the sake of an image.

My mantra regarding squirrels was’ if it’s not red, then a dodd of lead to the head.’

If you trap a grey, you’re obliged to cull it. If you release it, you’re breaking the law.

I don’t shoot anything these days but I would have no qualms about shooting greys and also, feral pigeon, as long as I was equipped to do so and had the relevant licences and permissions in place.

as a serious point invasive species are the biggest threat there is to biodiversity on the planet. But thats way too serious cause mine ( & I know all others who responded in a similar manner) meant posts in a light hearted way

I’m not against shooting squirrels but in this case it won’t solve the problem if you are wanting to put peanuts out on a log or similar to get a ‘natural’ scene.

The only solution I can offer is what I employ fo feeding birds not squirrels. Feeder on a long wire hanging from a tree branch, on a pole (which can be greased or have other anti-climb device, on a horizontal line with anti-climb device. Sometimes they will learn to circumvent the obstacles and that is where shooting will work.

On a more general note, I suppose you need to put the peanuts in a place where a beak is necessary to get at them.

A bit tongue in cheek, somewhat overkill a .17 Rem would be good.
BTW what are the sights on the .243 the bottom one looks like an image intensifier , but what is the one above it?

Air rifle is all that’s necessary and safer in most situations.

Mix the peanuts with chilli - birds don't have receptors to respond to the 'heat' but it may well discourage the squirrels. :)
And if they come along carrying a bag of Tortilla chips, you know that didn't work :D

Yes, forgot about that, though it hasn't worked for me in the past :(.

Can take a day or 3 for the squirrels to realise that the nuts/seeds make their mouths hurt but after they've all come to that conclusion, they generally avoid the seeds. Some seem to like chilli though...

Maybe put peanuts in feeder then when they start taking them put an actual chilli pepper in so the try to bite through it to get at nuts. :). I have to say this seems more cruel than shooting the poor little varmints* :(.

* or critters, depending on the situation :).

Suspend a feeder with thin thin thin line..across the back yard and make it super slimey with some vaseline.. or anything else you have in your bedside cabinet. Does work, as a kid I remember my parents dong this. Fun antics etc too.

It occurs to me you could combine my suggestion with that of @Lez325 by putting peanuts in empty cartridge cases :).

Sadly shooting humans is frowned upon ;)
Not sure you are right about that given how popular it is, particularly with governments :(.

Les..I was intending taking you up on your offer of a meet in the coming months..(off to Mull and Chanary Point tomorrow and an op due in mid-June) but having seen these personal items I'm having second thoughts in case I say the wrong thing......

I have 3 shotguns too John, much more effective at close range :LOL::LOL::LOL:

If I followed that train of thought I would just end up shooting idiots on a daily basis.
