FILM Photographer of the Year 2020 Discussion Thread

I’ve been stuck with a nasty chest infection for over a week now and not been able to get out the house, so my grand plans for this month have gone out the window! Shame as this was the category that I was most looking forward to. I’ve had to cobble something together this afternoon in the...

    Water types

I only use deionised water for my final wash with fotoflo as this means the negs don’t dry with water spots. I could squeegee but don’t believe in it!

I need help from people with calibrated and high gamut monitors.

Have you printed the image yet? This is all very pointless otherwise. You are experiencing just what anyone else who sees your photo digitally will experience, regardless of if it looks right to you.

I'm looking for inspiring analogue landscape photographers...

Fair point, I think that they certainly have a style that is not to everyones taste, but they are far removed from the usual hyper saturated stuff of Instagram and 500px. Some of his stuff is verging on the 'graphic' spectrum to me, it seems some of his earlier work is a bit more traditional...

True, but not the type of manipulation the op talks about.

    C41 Developing - updated

I posted a pic in the film shots thread, it shows some colour banding on the edges of the frame. It is perhaps not the best example to be asking this about as it was shot on Agfa Vista that is a year expired, but this roll was on the top of another roll of ColourPlus in the tank, that roll has...

Shot of the late afternoon sun from my first roll of home developed C41. Bit of colour banding going on, but not bad. Wimbleball Lake by Craigus89, on Flickr

    C41 Developing - updated

Just developed my first two rolls. I don't think I stuffed anything up though I felt more panicked than I thought I would as I wasn't using any sort of heating control and I forgot to measure the Blix out into a jug at the right volume about 30 seconds before I needed it, but got there just in...

Archive Storage Options for Negatives, Slides, Prints & Media

Any reason that you couldn't cut every other strip in half and just use the 6 strip version? I realise it may be a faff to scan in that instance, but if it is simply archive then may not ever be an issue?

Show us yer film shots then!

There are some great photos in this thread recently. Love the shot of the Lloyds building by @AZ6 in particular, it has an amazing cinematic feel to it. This is just a random shot I took a few months back with a little XA2. Really must pick one up again, I don't know why I sell film cameras as...

    Offers in Classifieds

People often price things on the high side. The offers can always just be declined. I think it would pretty much kill the classifieds if this were a rule.

New M42 SLR with Instax Mini - Kickstarter

Not sure how much this has been discussed on this forum in particular and I'm sure there are technical reasons beyond my understanding (probably surrounding the shutter) that prohibit this, but why has no one made a kick starter for a non-gimmick camera that uses 135 film and takes an existing...

Who's gunna go LF togging tomorrow in a gale?

I got out today for a wild walk on Exmoor, only 35mm camera for me though. I took 4 rolls of film and had 10 shots left in the camera but didn’t even load one new roll. Far too wet. Great walk though.

Thanks for the information chaps. I will have a look for a 2.5l kit I think and some extra bottles for storage.

    C41 Developing - updated

As usual there are a lot of conflicting views on the internet about how long C41 chemicals can last. I don't mind buying in bulk but I don't get through a huge amount of film, on average a roll a week and averages about half and half black & white to colour. I would also like to make it as...

“He who can does; he who cannot, teaches.”

It would be better, but in my opinion at least, a majority of gear heads are not great photographers. Competent, yes, but not great. Conversely the majority of great photographers don't give a stuff about their equipment so long as it does the job for them. They don't upgrade because they fancy...

“He who can does; he who cannot, teaches.”

Knowing lots about photo equipment and taking good photos does doesn’t have a strong correlation. If the people in question give you the information you want then what is the problem? My mechanic knows how to fix a car but I don’t ask why he isn’t racing F1.

Medium Format : Flatbed Scan - VS - 35mm : Dedicated (Plustek) Film Scan

I tend to use the cheaper ones as the cost can quickly get out of hand for multiple rolls and good quality scans. This is also leading me towards keeping it all "in-house". Who do you use?

Medium Format : Flatbed Scan - VS - 35mm : Dedicated (Plustek) Film Scan

Thanks for the input everyone. It sounds to me like Nige is perhaps able to get better results than many others can who I'm sure are not computer illiterate either so I am still a bit unsure. I would rather avoid lab scans altogether, particularly for medium format images that I will likely...

Thanks Nige, that is a good example of the scanning potential, there is a lot of detail in there!

Medium Format : Flatbed Scan - VS - 35mm : Dedicated (Plustek) Film Scan

These discussions on scanning are quite wide ranging but I haven't come across much about this specific topic, so let me explain. Medium format is something that I have wanted to use for a couple of years now and I've discussed that a little on here. The main reason by a long way that I haven't...
