The Amazing Sony A7 / A9 / Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Possibly one of my favourite non Mrs WW pictures (obviously the one with you in them are always the best, dear) from the last two weeks. Just a simple picture, but I like it :D A7 and e fit Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 at f8. It's lovely to have had a couple of days recently when there's been a...

The Amazing Sony A7 / A9 / Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I've used my lowly A7 in any and all conditions including snow, pouring rain, the humidity of Thailand and blizzards on the beach at home with normal and sensible precautions and it's survived. I think I'd worry about being hit by a wave or dropping it into the sea but as long as those things...

I've just been reading about the A6400 and I have a question... if anyone knows... I see that the max shutter speed is 1/4,000 which would irritate me when using wide apertures in good light. I see that it can shoot silently so I assume this is with an electronic shutter? If it has an...

Safely Storing Camera & Lenses in Car?

The things are cheap enough, I wouldn't bother with any maintenance. I always have a couple in whatever my camera gear is in, box, case or bag. Just thought they were worth mentioning in the context of storing gear in a car.

Various sites are reporting price cuts on Zeiss Batis and Loxia lenses. I don't know if these apply in the UK but anyone interested in these lenses can no doubt take a look.

Anyone not interested in cheap old lenses? Then look away... A7 with a Miranda 24mm f2.8 in Canon FD breachlock fit. The beach was pretty quiet which was understandable as it was freezing. f2.8 and just a bit longer than minimum focus distance. "Take my picture." It seems sharp...

The Amazing Sony A7 / A9 / Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

From what I've read a couple of things put me off... no DoF scale, f11 and f16 a bit close and just dots and I'm not sure how the clickless aperture ring would feel as with the camera to my eye I'd like to feel each setting click into place. Price looks ok though but it would look better if it...

The rumor site reports a firmware update for the 16-35mm GM which "Solves a rare issue where some SEL1635GM lenses are not properly initialised when used with ILCE-7M3 or ILCE-7RM3 cameras." Links are on the site...

    Mobile Phone Takeover?

I know you're old enough to remember the days when cameras weren't the big fat bloated lumps some DSLR and lens combinations are today. When did people start to accept that having a big fat camera and lens is the norm? It wasn't always so and thank God these big fat kit days are now coming to...

    Nikon Z6 mirrorless

There was a comment about awful skin tones and avoiding Nikon and Sony for Canon and f2.8's post is I assume in response to that as well as the general topic of CS. Personally I think that although WB makes a massive difference what the colour preference tests seem to show is that what makes the...

    Lumix TZ70 and travel

I like to take two cameras. A quality camera with a smallish wide aperture prime and a higher end compact camera for longer and wider shots and for the times when a larger camera is for whatever reason too much. This works for me as I'm happy enough with a 35 or 50mm lens most of the time. I...

No but I think I'd like one. I used to have a Sigma 20mm f1.8 and liked it very much but now I just have a couple of manual f3.5's, a 20mm and a 17mm. And on the subject of nice things... I took some shots with a Canon FD 50mm f1.8 that I haven't used much and liked it very much. The minimum...

Anybody clean there own camera sensor ?

Just to add to the Eclipse debate... I've used it for years... I think I started cleaning my own sensors when I had my Canon 20D and if that's right I cleaned that, my 5D, Panasonic GF1, G1, GX7, G7, GX80, GX9 and Sony A7 multiple times and all without damaging anything. I don't see the need...

We had a frosty morning here so I thought I'd see if there were any frosty trees to photograph, there weren't. I did get a shock as we normally walk to the shops down "The Lines" and pick raspberries and brambles on the nearby waste ground but today I found that it's been fenced off. We lost...

Using Canon lenses on Sony A7ii with Commlite adapter?

EF are full frame lenses and EF-S are APS-C, you might want to keep that in mind.

How old a Canon DSLR would you buy?

You wont get a 5D for £40 but cameras at that price will all probably be much of a muchness for image quality and personally at that price I'd just look at what's available and probably buy on condition as much as anything else. Just on the point above about the 10D. That camera wont take Canon...

    Crop to Full Frame?

Ah, so, no one said it. ok. I see. I'd hope that people would realise that technology moves on and this includes image quality. What this means in reality is that a newer smaller format camera may beat an older larger format camera if we're looking just at image quality. For example I thought...

How old a Canon DSLR would you buy?

I've had 300D, 10D, 20D and 5D. I used the 20D for something like 7 years. I think I only saw any real improvement in image quality with the 5D. The main problem with the early APS-C cameras is IMVHO the dynamic range and not being able to boost the shadows without noise, and a lot of it. If...

I think in reality although I might always regret it just a bit I'd probably never want to spend what the A9 costs. Given the reality of standing in the shop or sitting with my finger over the buy button I'd probably always go for the A7III. Until I read this... :D

    Crop to Full Frame?

Who said that? Whoever it was maybe they need to have a think. I think my MFT cameras beat my old Canon 5D which comfortable beat my old APS-C 20D but if the kit is anywhere near the same tech the larger sensor will probably end up edging it, assuming relatively good lenses etc. My general...

    Crop to Full Frame?

I can afford any "thing" I want but my conscience stops me (the Mrs doesn't seem to care what I spend) occasionally as does realising that I probably get as much fun out of spending £50 on an old film era lens as I'd get from spending £2/3K on a new camera. There are other reasons I wont buy...

Some people seem to have been saying that the A7III is close enough in some areas to the A9 and that the A9 is maybe not worth the extra… if that was the case does this firmware update go anywhere near making the A9 a more capable and attractive option despite and to justify the cost?

    Crop to Full Frame?

I wont quote the posts as it all gets messy but I see where people are coming from regarding costs against my argument that hobbyists care about things that non hobbyists don't but... I bought my 5D used for a reasonable price and although my A7 was/is the most expensive camera I've ever bought...

    Crop to Full Frame?

This is the sensible approach but if we are to be sensible there'd be few amongst us who would have anything but an entry level camera. The fact, although I do accept that this is a fact may be disputed :D is that as enthusiasts pursuing a hobby we have priorities, wants and needs beyond what...
